Skippable, not pretty, maybe important to face -
Dd14 has two friends who are cutting. They are really scaring her. Girl One is a friend with whom I believe dd went all the way through grade school, sometimes close, sometimes in distantly-spaced classrooms, but always fond. Girl Two she met in middle school, and at that time Girl One and Girl Two became close and have stayed close. Girl Two has been troubled, in my opinion, since we met her, and I believe began this practice with "scratching" 3 years ago, because another mutual friend stole a supposedly "sentimental" nail from her, saying she had witnessed her hurting herself with the nail and thought she could protect her if she hid the nail. Everyone tried to sweep that under the rug then, I think. Because dd backed up the protective girl's account, there has been a more distant relationship between dd and Girl Two since then. The protective girl's parents actually forbade contact with Girl Two.
By now Girl Two has been cutting a long time and Girl One, her closest friend, has now taken it up, with cuts that dd saw yesterday at all different places around the wrists. (In other words, this is not hidden, so breaking news to family, etc., is not a consideration.) Dd only has a couple minutes to see these girls every day. I told her the most important thing to talk about is how very valuable they are, and the second thing, if she can get that much said, is how much control they can have in the near future, living away from parents in just a few years if they so choose, with many options open.
Dd wants to do something to pull Girl One back from this path before it goes further, because she suspects it is not deep-seated but done in response to peer pressure. She thinks in terms of surprise gifts, which I suppose is age-appropriate, especially when she only has minutes. She wants to enclose a note (there always has to be a note - they live by notes) asking her to stop. I have thought of one of those soft rubber bracelets with uplifting words on it for $2, but maybe she really needs scar cream. Oh dear, probably not that brave. What do you think?

Lovely idea Harriet! My thought is this: can you or dd talk to the counselor at school? Cutting on the wrist is a scary thing to think about, I'd err on the side of caution after loosing my dsis to suicide.
Yes it's definitely a whacky one here. I had a low in the night had to have breakfast at 4 ish and change bed clothes in the dark [they were damp from the profuse sweating; the low brought on I caught it in time yea] when I looked in the mirror this morning the top was on inside out glad I caught it before heading out!!! Chickens don't mind and it was under my coat for the first outing! LOL
I've had breakfast did my journaling my sleep in day but h. got me up by 6:30 or so to do chicken chores.

Oh, my, Harriet. We're hearing more and more about cutting these days.

I would guess that your dd's instincts are probably good with regard to an age appropriate response - whether it will change anything is another issue. Could dd let a guidance counselor at school know about girl one and two also?
I need to do some paperwork challenges.....
Realized earlier that it is "Administrative Professionals Day" and that I should do something for our temple secretary. Perhaps I'll stop at groc store for a gift card of some kind later.

((Hugs)) for LO. ((Hugs)) for Harriet's dd14. Both of those other girls need help. Dee, I'm very glad your dgd is going to get the help she needs. Nancy, I'm glad you are all right this morning! Nice to hear Lucy & dh are home safe.
Hello to All!
Well, a/c guy was here at 8:30 this morning for 3 1/2 hours and assures me that a/c is fixed! Yes, Harriet, we are grateful for the extreme difference in price - $2100 down to $392.
I was able to get daily routine done before the work started this morning. So after a quick lunch I will start a small project to work on this afternoon; I'm thinking probably go through the small bookcase in my bedroom.

Hello. Harriet, your DD is a very sensitive young girl. I'm sure the gift will help. Kathryn, I'm glad your knees don't need anything further than physio. OKay, I'm sure you will get a handle on LO's health. Crossing fingers he outgrows this.
Hello to everyone. Sunny, so happy for you the AC worked out that way. Unbelievable how a company would do that to you.
Had a good day so far. Slept in a bit. Then I got desk / office chores done; 2 statements done, faxed, and sent off.
I'm pretty on track now, have another space (my desk and hutch) all cleaned off, dusted polished, decluttered. Did that yesterday. It's such a joy to sit there now that I have a handle on all the ongoing projects. I need to do some outside work this afternoon and yesterday's LOL needs put away.

Morning y'all...
Last night I was so tired that while watching the Deadliest Catch I covered my eyes at a certain part and woke up 15 minutes later with my hands still over my eyes. Needless to say I slept hard for the rest of the night.
I slept in late this morning...for me anyway...and didn't get up till 7. Did doggies, drank coffee, picked up my foot prints and then went on to dust the entire house. Wasn't in the plans but went with the urge anyway. Laundry is spinning and I've allowed myself some computer time before I head outside to do some major tree trimming.
Okay...When I was very young,,,younger than LO... I was very prone to bronchitis which would quickly turn to pheumonia. My parents had a summer home very near the beach and I was never sick when I was living there. The other area that I was growing up in was situated in a valley near an industrial area. Even 60 years ago the drs considered my conditions were somehow due to the environment. I was so sick most of the time that the Dr's strongly suggested that we move, which in fact we did. Salt air did wonders for my health. Though I continue to battle this problem through out my life, the events weren't nearly as often. I seldom get a cold that doesn't head directly to my chest, prompting anti-biotics and such. I'm good at guaging when I need to head to the dr's. Sometime I think to myself...nah, I don't need to go in, but by the end of the day find myself in front of a dr who usually confirms what I already know.
Harriet...In both states that I have taught in, teachers are now required to report any signs of cutting of a student. It falls into the same catagory as reporting physical abuse. Counselors are also required to notify the parents. Then its up to the parents to seek treatment for their child. Knowing a friend is cutting seems to be very hard on their friends. I've watched this happen many times. Its so like your wonderful dd to want to help, Just keep reminding her that all her good intentions may not effect the outcome of her friends. And your dd is so lucky to have a mom like you. I know it really helps your dd that she can come to you and talk about anything.
Dee..I'm so happy that your DGD is in a program suited for her situation. I've worked with many girls that have similar behaviors and come from similar backgrounds. I love working with them...they make me laugh sometimes, but ya gotta remember that I am NOT living with them. My "girls" remind me of 2 yr olds that are having super temper tantrums all the time. The behaviors your DGD are displaying are so typical for girls like herself, and the people living with her are so used to dealing with them. I am glad to hear your dgd is not allowed to contact her home. Think that will be a priviledge she will have to earn now.
Phew...I need to get back to my to-do list. The day is slipping away, but then again its ok cause I'm retired

and YES, I'm still lovin' it.
Waving to y'all.....Hope ya'll are having a good day... c'yall later

Sunny..Thank you for posting
The amazing part is that Seaside Heights hopes to be open by Memorial Day. And although it all looks promising with many people happy to see the boardwalk being rebuilt, there are still major problems for the everyday people living in the area. FEMA is providing very little help...people continue to fight with their insurance companies...the red tape, both from the federal and state depts, iis ridiculelessly difficult to navagate. It is Katrina on steriods... Unfortuniately the lessons learned for my friends and many like them is you can only rely on yourself in matters like this. It is very disheartning to watch from the inside.

Adults are already aware of both girls' cutting. I think that was part of Girl One's upset yesterday that first worried dd. Some adult had realized it - either a teacher who contacted parents, or perhaps parents found out first. Girl Two has had a therapist for a long time, well aware of the cutting. And the first girl's parents are already aware of their child's friend's problem, so they could hardly have been fooled for long. Dd thinks this has just started with Girl One, and that's another reason she thinks it's just peer pressure - wanting to fit in.
