Harriet, I am so sad that your dd15 had such a rough day yesterday. I hope today is a better day. Some teenage girls can be so rude, like the one who remarked on the tennis shoes. Not to mention the ones who sat at the other end of the table and didn't speak.
When my dm was a young girl on the first day of school she was in a restroom stall and another girl was in the one next to her, that girl commented that dm didn't have new shoes. Dm said they just hadn't gotten them yet. That one comment has affected dm her entire life. Dm turned into a shoe fanatic. She always says that if her clothes are clean and fit well and as long as she has nice shoes on, she feels well put together. She is a shoe horse and hoarder to the nth degree. 17 years ago, her and dstepdad came out to see dgd17 who was a week old. When she came in she asked how long until the girls and their families would be coming over. She had decided the navy shoes that she had wore out here were too worn out and (get this) she didn't want her granddaughters seeing her in worn out shoes. So off to the shoe store she went. When she came back, she actually threw the older pair of shoes away. I was surprised because they really weren't that worn and she was NEVER known to get rid of shoes. Fast forward 8 years, we are in Wichita for the weekend. Dd1 had gotten her bachelors degree and graduation was that weekend. Dm and dstepdad met us there and we were all at the same hotel. There was a lounge area and we are all sitting around. Dd1 looks down at her shoes and the tips were scuffed, so she got out her trusty Sharpie and proceeded to cover the scuffs. The look on my dm's face was priceless, but she didn't say a thing. In her eyes dd1 can do no wrong.
Dd1 has always been frugal as far as she was concerned. They paid off their house a year or so ago. They have always saved money for the kids college and plan to pay for it, as long as they are getting good grades. Dd1 finally has started doing more for herself, as in buying more clothes and she has started having her hair cut and highlighted as often as it needs it. She has always worked so it isn't like she doesn't deserve these things.
I am sitting here babbling because I am about to climb the walls. Last night dh and his friend decided to meet at IHOP at 7:30 this morning and after eating, leave from there. Dh asked me if I wanted to go, so I accepted. This morning dh was all loaded and was going to go out the small gate, which I would then shut behind him. I would then meet him at IHOP. Before he got on the motorcycle we were talking and both looked down at the same time and there was a nail that holds down the black paper that is put on before a roof is shingled. It was right in the middle of the front tire. The head of it is bigger than a nickel.

So we went on to the restaurant. No one likes to fix a motorcycle tire and they need to be replaced. It is 50 miles to the nearest dealer. They decided to go there and see what can be done. Dh planned to call as soon as they opened. It's been 2 hours and 15 minutes since dh left home for the second time. Dh decided to come back home after eating and exchange his sleeping bag for a flat sheet and a small travel type pillow. They will be staying in hotels or KOA campgrounds. The campgrounds they will stay in have air conditioned cabins with beds. You have to bring your own bedding.
The irony of this whole tire debacle is that dh's friend decided early this week that he needed to have his back tire replaced. He didn't think to call the dealership an hour away but called the big city dealership that is 4 hours from here. They told him to call Friday morning at 8:30 and he would be on the stand by line, when he gets there. So he may have went ahead and left dh behind to get his tire replaced.
Did I say that I am a climbing the walls? I AM!

Cowinkie, I have seen your light on several times this week and thought you were already on your trip. I hope you and Sweetie have a relaxing and fun vacation.
Cowinkie, I also hide my jewelry when I leave town. I would never hide it in the bottom of my trash because......we were burglarized 31 years ago at Christmas. They took our 13 gallon trash can and filled it with all of my meat except for some frozen shrimp! They also got all my jewelry, so that is why I hide it now.
I always use trash bags and always put out the trash before a trip, so it was a clean receptacle.
Speaking of jewelry being thrown out. About 10 years ago dsil's dm had a medical procedure. She gave him her wedding rings and a mother's ring for safe keeping. Not having a purse, dsil put them in a paper towel and took them home. Dd1 and the kids were out of town. Thank goodness, because he ended up throwing them away and he had no one to blame but himself.

She was heartbroken because she had been widowed a few years before. I always joke that if I had to give my rings to dsil for safekeeping, I would just swallow them. Just kidding, but would be tempted.
I am still climbing the walls...................

No time to CUOP - I'm taking a short break from the garage sale prep. We are fast filling the 'sale' space with things from the garage and the shed. There may not be room for the rest of the stuff in the basement. Lots going out, though.

Yes, I'm glad Friday is here too. It is another busy day for me.
Dphysics prof. friends stayed until about 10 pm last night, which was not conducive to early bedtimes. I stayed up until 11:30 working on finishing up things in ds' bedroom and taking care of band email.
I went for a jog this morning, s2s-ed, and then was out the door again to WW, Target, Office Max. I succeeded in procuring a desk chair and a bench with some storage for GG's room. I did not succeed in finding a bedside table, part of the trouble being that our beds are European style with wood frames (which dh designed and made himself
) and low to the ground, so we need a table that is no more than 18 or 19 inches tall. I did buy a little round accent table that will serve until we can find a better one. Ds' bedside table was a wooden cat table from Indonesia; very cool but it is not in the greatest shape anymore.
Dh helped me to get the rooms ready and the carpet cleaner guy has just arrived. He is going to do: ds room, play room, downstairs hallway, stairs, dd15's bedroom, upstairs hallway, and area rug in the living room. The only other carpeting he is not doing is dd17's room - and some other area rugs.
While our carpets are getting clean, I will:
1. finish a.m. routine
2. eat lunch
3. review/plan activities for tutorees; I'm meeting them at 2 today. Wed. did not work out.
Not sure what I'll do after tutoring, maybe buy a large satchel for art work in ds' room I'm planning on storing. I'll probably do more deep cleaning and start putting the GG's room together. I'll need the girls to help me in the bathroom to make space for GG's things in the cupboard, but dd17 has small group after school today. Maybe we'll do that this evening.
((Harriet's dd15)). I'm sorry for the rude kids. It sounds like she is handling things well. Dd17 had a similar experience with friends; after dd17's friend moved to another school btwn. 9th and 10th grade, she always ate lunch alone. Actually, she usually doesn't eat lunch - she goes to the library and does homework during her lunch hour. I think her 4th hour teacher last year let the kids eat lunch in class, so maybe she did that. She does have friends at school, though. For some reason, she doesn't eat with them. One friend is a year younger and had a different lunch hour last year. Not sure about this year. Dd15 says at lunch, she sits at a table of girls mostly from their middle school. It sounds like a really nice bunch; 2 days ago, one girl brought a foreign exchange student from Spain she met in one of her classes to eat with them, and the blind girl in the school also was asked to join them. I'm glad to hear of their being kind to those who are new to the school and a little different.
Speaking of trash, I have taken out probably about 6 bags of trash from ds' bedroom.
Off to get something done.

(((Harriet's dd))) I just hate hearing about all these mean girls! I don't know what gets into girls this age. Thank goodness dd is so mature and sensible, Harriet! She will do fine... but I hate that she has to have even one minute of sadness over stuff like this.
Well... I got pretty much NOTHING done yesterday.
Today... hmmm... I've got to s2s, then I'll have until around 4:30 before dgs arrives.

Bet I won't get too much done after that, right?
I never wished Twins a "happy new year." (((HUGS))) for all the busy-ness of your week. You have definitely earned some quiet time!
(((Twins' dd)))
Oh my goodness -- the ring stories!
I wish I could have carpets cleaned like helia... dh is such a... well, what is the word? He just never wants to take on ANY sort of "project" like that. * sigh *
WTG, Kathryn, on all your garage sale prep!!!
(((BIG HUGS))) Lilac!!! (and dh!!!)
I also need to schedule mammogram. Thanks for the reminder, Ivy.
Have a GREAT trip, Cowinkie!!!
Loved the grasshopper story AND the worm story... but ooohhh... would NOT have wanted to be a participant in either one!
BookSaver -- have a good day! Looks like you are awfully busy, too!!!
Nancy -- WTG on your morning walk. I'm thinking of counting vacuuming as my exercise today.

I finally called dh 50 minutes ago. No answer, so left a message. I am betting that they didn't have a tire and sent them onto the city. Driving a motorcycle with a nail in the tire is sooooooooo dangerous. I am hoping they at least secured it for him, somehow.

Oh Lilac...I will be thinking of you till you hear from your DH. The good news is those roofing nails are pretty secure once you run over them, but still understand why you're hiking around your house. I would be too.
Love the ring story btw...I always make it a point to watch any show that has past burglars talk about how they case your house and what parts of your house they hit looking for your goodies. My mom watched one once and learned sophisticated burglars use metal detectors to search for your jewelery...the fellow suggested hiding your good stuff in your pots and pans...says it sets off the metal detectors and the thieves don't want to spend much time looking. I figured if the burglars were watching these programs too...and I would if I was one...I would use the information gleamed from the program to make my job easier...I have a terrible mind I know

I tend to leave a bit of sort of good jewelery that doesn't mean much to me out so the burglars will think they've found my stuff...think of it as bait...then I have a dandy place where I put the rest. So far so good...however if the house burns down...oh well, I'm out of luck.
You've seen my light on because I am always checking in, but don't always have time to post. I got my CPAP the other day...thats a whole different story in its self...and am learning how to use it. Right now its keeping me up at night, so I'm even more tired during the day. My new "part time" position is much more complicated than I was told. I've already told my principal twice that he needed to be looking for someone else...Problem is I'm good at what I do and they don't want me to leave. However, I am getting attached to my students and they are getting attached to me. Not good in my line of work. I told my principal again yesterday that my time was limited there...he's says he knows and is looking for my replacement. I love my position, the kids and staff. I love what I am doing, but there is way, way more paper work then I was told about, including answering to the state, to do and even though I'm very capable of doing it...I don't wanna. That's why I retired
Waving to y'all...I'm off to pack. Then its thief thinking time and action....

LOL at Cowinkie's bloodworm sandwich story.
Dh finally called. The head of this roofing paper nail was plastic and it broke off before they got to the town 50 miles from here. It was holding air, so they called the big city dealership and put both their names on the stand by list for tires. When he called they had just arrived at the dealership and will have about an hour wait. Which is no big deal, they are just glad to be there and could wait all day if need be.
Cowinkie, even though both my girls are grown, I still hurt when they hurt and wish that my magic wand could make everything in their lives and the lives of my grandchildren all better. As I was raising my kids, I thought when they were grown it would be different. It's different all right, I have more people to love and more people's highs and lows to deal with. I am blessed and wouldn't want it any other way.
I have a mean girl situation in my family and it hurts to watch it. Dgd17 daughter of dd1, is very jealous of dgd17 daughter of dd2. At Christmas it will be 2 years since she decided to be mean to her cousin.
They used to be so close. I think dd1's dd doesn't want to be close to her cousin so that she can do what she wants, because her cousin would tell on her if she knew she was doing something that she shouldn't. Between that and the jealousy it is very touchy. At least my 2 daughters have learned to not let it affect their relationship. It took them 7 years and lots of fights and tears to get to this point. I was so tired of being in the middle, but I have gotten very good at being neutral.

Cowinkie, dh has now been on a CPAP machine for over 2 years now. He even takes it on his motorcycle trips. I was afraid the sound would bother me, but the last time he was gone I realized I missed having the sound in the bedroom. How's that for crazy?

I think I'd agree with lucylee that vacuuming would be exercise for me today, too. Except I already exercised at 9:00 a.m.! So maybe I got double.
Also much in common with helia in my thinking today. I wouldn't be surprised if 6 bags of trash came from the small bedroom here during our intense clean-out, since a lot of tough decisions were being made. I know that a full bag of donations did. Wow, helia is getting so much carpet cleaning done at once. Your floors must be pretty clear, helia, just to be able to schedule this.
Anyway, Ta. Da.
The whole room is officially deNUDEed. Cleared completed and vacuumed completely, except for the heavy heavy desk, which doesn't count because I can't move that thing. Well, it is moved a few feet. The room is a temporary playroom for the boys this weekend and then first of next week we'll definitely rent the carpet cleaner and we may paint.
What a strange feeling for me, to have seen 2 rooms of my house completely empty within the same month of time. But it feels good.
Vacuumed much of the rest of the first floor, and no, I don't think this house can be done in a half hour. However, if I were in the practice of vacuuming every day, the time to accomplish it would go down, down, down, I know.
Have not yet heard when dd33's family will be driving in. That could mean almost anything, including a possible cancellation if things are going wrong.
Thanks to everyone for the kind words about dd's frustrations! One thing that breaks up her day is that she can text her friends at their new locations and still feel "in touch". Before school, she can hang out with a friend near their first classes and chat. When she told me about the shoe comment, she flopped her feet up on the truck's dashboard and asked, "Mom, do you know what Magic Erasers are good for?" and did a silly imitation of the fashion-conscious girl looking askance at her shoes. So I know she has a sense of humor about it.
