Here's a post from Monday - for those who are interested.
Hi everyone! Internet is spotty at this hotel. This is the first time I've been able to get on with my own laptop since we got here Saturday. I've borrowed dh's laptop to check email a couple times.
Travels here were uneventful. On the flight from Munich to Naples, the flight attendant kept talking to me in German and to my kids in English. I thought that was funny. . .I think dh was asleep, so she didn't really speak to him at all. I can manage only minimal responses in German, so either that was enough or she ignored my accent. . . . Naples has been really interesting! Despite warnings from many that it is a dirty and not a very nice city with lots of unsavory characters, we've been fascinated by its history - its churches and the catacombs built originally by the Greeks. And everyone here is SO very friendly and helpful! We've had several people ask where we are from. When we say we're from the USA, we get blank stares. Then, dh says he is from the Netherlands and I am from the USA, and that seems to go better, but inevitably Germany keeps being brought up. LOL!! 
I guess we look German - or at least not stereotypical "American" in the eyes of Italians, likely b/c we're all blond and blue/green eyed to some degree. Dd16 is almost brown-eyed. . . Note: I am adopted, but one of the few facts I know about my birth family is that I do have a German background, but I don't know exactly how close or what exactly that means. . .
We went to Herculaneum today, which was so very fascinating. It is amazing how well preserved parts of the 2,000 year old village are! I remembered CathyS{/b]'s recommendation to see Herculaneum over Pompeii. Others have corroborated that recommendation. However, dd18 insists on seeing Pompeii since she (and ds) learned about it in some detail in school. So, tomorrow, we'll stop by Pompeii (shortly) en route to Positano, a small town on the Amalfi Coast for the next stage of our Italian vacation. I believe the area has lots of seaside cliffs. We are traveling by metro, train, boat, and then likely a taxi tomorrow. So, I'm hoping we can navigate that all safely with our bags. . . .
My brand new camera seems to take very nice photos - but the battery is exhausted very quickly. Either we're failing to fully charge it or something is wrong with it.
I think we're getting over the worst of the jetlag and the initial loss of one night's sleep for all of us except dh, who happens to sleep decently on planes. I might take some time to quickly cuops and see what you all are up to!
I'll try to pop in another time.

Positano is a very charming town!! It is basically built vertically on the cliffs of a small bay. The landscape is rugged, bluffs and rocks. This is a major tourist destination, though.
We spent most of today - on the beach. Dh of course brought his laptop and worked. I brought a book, but I also went for a swim. The day is gorgeous, clear and sunny. The wind came up later this afternoon, though. It now looks windy and maybe clouds are being blown through. We had a spattering of rain early yesterday evening about this time too.
The internet at this hotel works very well, amazing since this is a small town as opposed to Naples, which is a big city. I'm not complaining, though! Internet can only be accessed on one floor of the building, though, which is where I'm sitting, in the lounge area, basically. It took me over an hour to go through my emails and send off 2 more resumes. --As I'm typing, I'm realizing that I forgot to respond to my mentoree student, who probably thinks I've fallen off the face of the planet.
We started a different meal pattern while in Naples. We eat a decent breakfast at the hotel - included. Italian hotels put together nice breakfast buffets, which we discovered 3 years ago at our first Italian hotel. Then, we have a snack mid afternoon, a pastry or today was fruit and some fries. Then, we have a nice Italian meal at a good restaurant mid-evening. Eating at 7 pm here is considered early.
I am walking so much and so much of the walking involves stairs, both here and in Naples, that I think I may have actually lost some weight, despite sampling pastries and gelato and eating Italian meals every day. Since Positano is more vertical than horizontal, walking places involves going up or down - either on slanted roadways or stone stairways. Also, dh has us all taking the stairs up and down to our hotel rooms.
I'm going to check in with my mentoree and then go back to the room. It is about 6:40, so we will be thinking about getting dinner soon!!
I hope everyone is doing well. I'm sorry I haven't cuops. This is the first time I've been online for a couple days now.

helia, your trip sounds wonderful!
Nothing much to report. I did spend some time at my desk and figured out a few problems. Started a tablet of master list and copies of paperwork at the back...so it's still a work in progress but organized a bit. Discussed it with DH. I could tell by his question that he still doesn't grasp it all. I hate being in charge of so much stuff.
I need to deal with something else now, computer related, and straighten out DH's license now that his continuing ed is done. That would be one thing off my mind. bbl

helia, that's interesting that you might not look like you are from the U.S.! Hmmmm.... ... Perhaps a Stetson? Interesting that someone from (relatively) close to Germany would look at you and think you look German. How beautiful to see towns built upon hillsides. I remember that that was part of the wonderful double-episode Ray Romano did for Everybody Loves Ray when the family returned to Italy to learn about heritage. The girls probably thought of the dramatic song by Bastille as they considered Pompeii.
Have been several hours working at my parents' house on the porch, washing machine, general declutter and cleaning out a drawer. My mother had a marvelous collection of twist ties - actually nice to find the old type, ridged, that you have to pay for now. We use those outdoors for various things.
Here's an uplifting story/song that asks why makeup and photoshopping. Good for teens to see, but really for everyone, since we all need to just like ourselves.

Very sleepy here, may go for a nap.
Am enjoying watching the window washers swing by (they are in chair-slings.) The last of the 8 windows has just been done.
I also did the ironing.
Ds is here and has finally applied for a building key (they have to do a background check on him) so should have one tomorrow or the next day.
I need to finish the service by tonight so I can send it before tomorrow and its craziness.
