I was up early. That is 3 days in a row. I am wiped out. Slept a little in my chair but it is not good enough. I know if I don't soon learn to get to sleep at night I will crash. Wish I knew why it takes me so long to go to sleep. No, I'm not going on some kind of sleep medicine. If I keep getting up early, at some point I must be sleepy at night.
LadyM, care to share how you made those slips? I love sweet potatoes. Our DMom used to say, around holiday time (the only time she made yams) that yams were better to eat. I don't know why she thought that. I make sweet potatoes a couple times a month, baked, and we eat them with butter and a scant sprinkle of brown sugar. I remember she candied them after cooking, peeling, and cutting into thick slices in a skillet with butter and brown sugar that was all caramelized. But for some reason she considered them a special food just for holidays. I currently have sweet potato vines that have taken over the garden, a small gift from DH's neighbor friend.
Thank you for the recipe. Looks really good and a good one to take away. I think I would add some tomatoes. Currently I have been using canned fire-roasted tomatoes that are really good and I love the little charred black bits throughout.
We had an early morning...last night DH asked what we were doing and I fortunately remembered we'd signed up for a breakfast at church. We had a nice group of people there and their "committee" made plain and cheesy scrambled eggs (I wish I could make mine that fluffy) and sausages, little tiny links that were so good; biscuits and gravy (I just had a biscuit) and sweet roll and a nice fruit dish loaded with berries. We'll see how I do with the seeds. I tried just to eat the other fruits in it. If DH had been up to it he'd have made a huge pot of oatmeal with raisins. People were asking for it, we were told.
So...sitting with another couple, we began talking about something regarding the mens group meeting Thursday morning, for a coffee and (if they go early enough a doughnut) and a Bible Study. We never knew that was going on. So I kept asking questions about it and I told DH: you ought to go to this. You're up that early... it's 7:00 AM. It's just a group of guys who have been doing this and we never knew.... so, seeing our interest, I encouraged the guy who leads this to ask DH to come. It hasn't been advertised in the church, perhaps they didn't want it to get too big. So... I'm going to put it on the calendar. It would be something nice for DH to go to Thursdays. He used to go to a mens group Saturday mornings where they had just a basic breakfast and a bigger one cooked once a month and a study or a video. Since our new minister came it doesn't happen any more and he misses it. This one's just a smaller group. I hope he goes.
I look for ways to keep him engaged in life, now that he's not working any more, he's pretty bored with life.

I'm successfully doing nothing here.
Not quite.
Last night I had a very early dinner out on the balcony. Since I had so much to eat, it took a long time and during that time the foxes came to remind me I was not alone. There's a reason I lock the screen door to the porch - it won't keep out a human but it does keep curious larger mammals out! One lay down on my little deck overlooking the water, another on the deck at the cottage next door and the third was wandering around between the two cabins but then decided to pick a fight with the one on my deck and then they all ran off chasing each other.
Before bed they probably were fighting cuz I could hear otherworldly sounds coming from further away but not too far away. I didn't bother to go look. In the past, I've ended up having to walk in a circle around them because they won't cede the path between the lodge and cabin to me. In the dark it is startling to come upon them.
Today I slept in until after 7 and had a slow start to the day.
I had only 1 bran muffin (leftover from yesterday, not fresh baked) not two, cuz they are still making their presence in my system known. As I sat out on the porch with my tea and muffin and chocolate, I thought it was begining to rain but it was just the leaves falling making the sound of drops of rain. The loons are more vocal now than they were a day ago, so I'm enjoying that too.
I stayed out for ages on the porch and actually got cold. Came in and worked on moving files over from the old drive until my computer started getting too hot for my comfort. Apparently all these files are being uploaded to OneDrive was well, which is a trick since my internet is so unsteady (up for 10 minutes, down for 5, rinse and repeat.)
I might be here alone but there's a steady stream of vehicles going down the driveway to the old owner's cottage. And often back to the new owner's home. When I'm in my cabin or on the porch I can only hear them, not see them.
Around 10:30 I took a shower, got dressed, painted my toe nails and fingernails and then had breakfast.
Then I decided to go sit in the sun on the deck right over the water (my deck overlooking the water is shady most of the day.)
While on the deck for a couple of hours another car went by to the old owner's place, and then parked in the parking lot and the person went into the lodge. I waved from the deck and when they didn't find anyone there, they came down to see I knew where the old owner was. I explained she's away and has left the foxes in charge with me as their helper because I have opposable thumbs. They were wondering if they could park here because they were going to a party at a nearby cottage and I gave permission. It isn't as if this place is hopping with activity. So now I hear cars in the parking lot and people walking by.
I had some leftover soup for lunch. I don't usually eat lunch but wanted to get it eaten up. Not sure when I'll eat dinner. I need to either go for a walk now or admit to myself it isn't going to happen today. I had thought of going into town for a walk, which would be more flat, but I've pulled out the quiche to defrost for my dinner, so I guess I'll have that and go into town for a walk and frozen pizza tomorrow.

Always wise to have a different car parked at a different spot for a while, Kathryn, so you look safely populated. I was thinking of ... .. Dances with Foxes... .. sorry. Think of it this way - you must have no coyotes near you, or foxes would not be waltzing around like they own the place. They feel confident they don't have various competition, so you can feel confident they don't, too.
Dd25 is swinging by on her way to dstepdil's bday party for the dog. I don't ask questions; I just nod.
Time for my online prayer meeting.
Hi back to lucylee.

Harriet, a birthday party for the dog is as good an excuse as any other to have a party!
Kathryn, nice to know you are trusted enough to be left in charge by yourself.
I worked for a couple hours cleaning out the refrigerator. I couldn't believe it took so much work and time. I had several bowls of green peppers. My own from the garden and a man in church brings some little ones to give DH most weeks. He must have a garden. I prepped them and put them in the freezer. They'll be chopped up in things eventually. I had several meats which I labeled and put into the freezer. Made a big salad out of stuff that needed to be used up. We had that with dinner, DH contributed some bacon he had cooked and I had some feta cheese...it was a delicious salad. So now I'm ready to start cooking again. I washed all the big bowls and pots and colander and salad spinner, tonight dried and put them away. Used up all my time doing all this so we'll go to the beach tomorrow.
I put those men's meetings on the calendar but next thursday he has a Drs. appointment, so he says he will start the week after. I think he can manage that by himself.
My friend isn't coming to church with me tomorrow. I am beginning to wonder if she has decided not to come at all. Maybe she's not doing as well as she says, and perhaps her family has told her not to go.
Nancy, I try not to eat HF Corn Syrup either. I noticed that individual containers of apple sauce has that in it but the big jars do not. It's in so much stuff these days.
Ok see ya all later.

Sweet potato slips - The first time I put the health food store purchased organic sweet potatoes in a glass held up with toothpicks and fill glass with water covering about 1/3 of the sweet potato. In a few days roots will start growing in the water. Then in a couple of weeks green slips will start growing from the rest of the sweet potato. After the green part is several inches, break them off where they are growing out of the sweet potatoe and put them in glass of water. They will start growing roots. When roots are a few inches long they are ready to plant into soil.
Here is the same steps explained with pictures.
It might sound complicated but the whole process only takes about 5 minutes of hands-on time to accomplish.
IMHO sweet potatoes are the easiest vegetable to grow. I plant them in the spring and then ignore them the rest of the season. They get some water once a week or so. They are definitely the biggest return for the amount of effort.
DD12 and I have captured a few more insects for her project. I don't think we have 25 different kinds of bugs. It seems like a lot to capture!
DS15 worked until 5pm and arrived home hungry, dirty and sweaty. After eating and resting for a few minutes he was ready to go again. He went dirt bike riding with friends.
The family veto'd my casserole plans. They thought putting corn bread on top of ingredients wouldn't have good results. So much for that plan. Instead, I used the 2 lbs of hamburger meat to make 8 cheeseburger patties. We had homemade salsa, tortilla chips, and burgers

Time to get ready for bed. I got three months of one credit card entered into Quicken while watching You've Got Mail. I still have some old B&W screwball comedies left to watch tomorrow. With YGM it is easier to work because I haven't seen the films before. I have only seen one of the remaining films and watched it recently (no idea where so maybe not too recently.) But I've also got the Toy Story Films too, since when I moved over data from my old computer this morning, one folder was Dgd's TV to keep him quiet. There will be lots of Miss Rachel but also the Toy Story movies. (Edit: just peeked and Monsters Inc is on there too!)
Tomorrow is my last day. I hope to go to the park for a hike and also to look at a toy logging truck that dgs6 wants. It is quality stuff, therefore ridiculously priced. On the other hand, he loves the logging museum (it is a hiking trail with the displays and logging camp buildings all along it) and insists we go every single year. Amazon has a similar one for 2/3 of the price but it isn't exactly the same and he'll know the difference.
