IMHO, the conveniences of modern civilization far outweigh ancient aesthetics, although the latter are often very beautiful! Over here, it's usually well off families who have "a place" in "Town" (London) during the week, and then go to their country estate for the weekend. (Actually to be strictly accurate, the word "weekend" was considered vulgar by the upper classes, so would be referred to instead as a "Friday to Monday". But I don't think this term is in use any more. )

I'm glad you managed to get your eye appointment, FFB.

I'm back from C's house. She was fine form, but I need a few minutes to de-compress , as she's very "full on"! The threatened rain has not, so far, arrived, so I'm going to spend some time in my garden now, and then tackle indoors this afternoon. If I prioritise the most important things that *need* to be done today, everything else will keep!

Morning all. Helian that is a huge relief everything went so well. Sounds like a lovely healing time remembering your mom. I hope you can truly rest now though you will miss her.

The cottage looks lovely trissie. How nice to have a home away from the noise. I wonder if one day you could restore it to more true to it's time with keeping the modern convenience. I think there are places like that here. Pretty sure the previous owner of the store has one on the lake still. Though I am a little worried he must be closing in on 90 and looking not quite as spry anymore...

Anyways I should get moving. We're off to the city in a couple hours. The Alberta kids are driving already. Too short of time to see them but I will take it. Ds and ddil are coming too. Shopping. Lunch somewhere. And figure out the logistics of a football game later.

Ds and ddil will squeeze in a bank appointment for the house deal. They found a cute little house almost across from the school in town but hiding in the trees. I think it's perfect for starter home. Of course I have only seen pictures so far but if all goes well they can be in the end of the month. It's empty already and all their stuff is in storage. So happy for them. And I get to see dd for a bit.

lauralind, we really love the location of the cottage, so we have various plans in mind - also considering how we could adapt it to be useable when we are older and have trouble walking up and down stairs. How big is the house DS and DDiL want to buy?
helia, even the more historical building have been refurbished to have hot water, indoor toilets and sometimes even dishwashers But I have been in my youth to cottages with an out-house or ones without running water. Glad the ceremony was nice and and all went well - and that people remeber your mom eventhough she was kinda "lost to the world" for years before her actual passing!
kittykatt, I never knew that "weekend" was considered rude! But it probably made sense for people who might have considered a day job as something inferior and not to be talked about.

I ended up sitting with DBD as she was doing her homework - no real "pick up", but I used the time to go through a box of felt-tip pens and the jar of pens on the dining table. Both needed decluttering and that's now done, so I will consider it success!

That sounds perfect for plans trissie. This house seems 2 bedrooms upstairs and finished basement. I imagine there's space for a bedroom downstairs too. The bathrooms I think might need some work but perfectly usable. Ds said last night that ddil already has ideas for taking a wall out or such. But it's perfect at the stage of move in and live in it for a while. And plenty of space for 2 or 3 baby size kids. . Lil j will have a bedroom that could share or something later.

Hi, all! It is travel day, and I have, as always, failed to complete the packing and house cleaning ahead of time. So, the usual rush, the usual late start, and the usual arrival in the middle of the night. Luckily, I am a night owl. But I will beg off from personal responses. That said, trissie thank you for the information about the background about cottages in Czechia. It shows how we use the same word to describe very different things that develop from different sources.

I have five jars of shredded apples - surprisingly lot of apples can be fitted in a jar when you squeeze them! Apple struedel is going to be the thing this winter My mom says they used to make 50 large (pint and a half / 700ml) jars each year! And that was all hand work - I have a (hand operated) peeler and an electric grater!
