Harriet - I think the quotes I choose surprise me too. In terms of who says what. Sometimes I want a quote someone and I look at the quotes and think "no". Also there may well be names well known in America I have never heard of or remembered.
I love that ancient folk say things complained of as a whine of modern times - still happening these days as we know.
Please - if anyone has other quotes - please trot them out.

Harmony - I hold off starting a PWYC thread until at least 4.30pm, though I often collect the quotes before then. The Thursday Friday thing happened at the end of a busy Thursday with activities that just happen on Thursday. A mind blip I guess. How I decided it was friday I have no idea,

MamaP - I am so pleased Emptynester sent you the link to your birthday wishes, and that you have posted.
I am realising I need computer and TV off earlier too and set myself a curfew. Mine is 10pm, though it needs to go earlier if I want to read a while.

Kathryn - I don't think it is masochism at work in the current goings on within our government - neither by the dictionary's nor Julia's definition. Sure there are people who have an aversion to Julia - just as there are people with an equal aversion to her opposition leader. The leadership style of recent weeks was beyond belief - you will pass this legislation by Thursday - when no one in parliament had seen the proposed legislation. I'm guessing some of her attributes mirrored the preceding leader who had been suddenly disposed. The leadership rumblings have been continually stirred by the opposition - who believe they should be the government only those independents supported the other lot, not theirs; and by the media who were caught unaware when the last disposing of a leader happened and don't want to miss involvement this time and continually stir the pot.
I usually don't bring politics here as the US folk know best not go there here.
Anyway.
Seems to me the government leader has been busy shooting themselves in the foot - only last few days I think - using a machine gun. 4 front benchers hit the dust is a visual result.
I do not accept the outcome of the next election is known now none the less. The biggest thing in their favour is the way state governments have acted since many state government changed hands. The question is - do we want that done on a nation scale, with federal responsibilities. Maybe the nation is wanting that experiment. Preferential, compulsory voting will bring a result in 6 mths or less. Voting for Informal (an invalid vote) is the only way to avoid finally putting either of the big parties before the other, and people will be looking for petty things as they make that choice as well as the big picture policies.
It may well come down to the undesirability of Stilettos or BudgieSmugglers in the minds of some. If that's shallow or masochism at work ? - I think it will cancel each other at work so that's really not the issue. ( BudgieSmugglers are the brief swimming attire sometimes triathlon competing opposition leader is photographed in.)
The leadership role of that party seems again to be a poison chalice if the result is as pole's predict - but who knows. Obama scored in US when many didn't think that would happen. And certain hostility seems to continue there. I guess that is democracy at work.


Hot sun is out today -Saturday - UV warnings are listed and the sun certainly had a kick to it. One load of washing is on the line.

Popping in to say good night. The gal who did my pedicure said the forecast was for 1-3 inches of snow tonight on the valley floor. The snow we got this morning has all melted. We do need the moisture so I will be looking out the window in the morning to see if it materialized. Hope you have all had a good day. Mine was. I like what Harriet said this morning - that one event away from the house was enough! Think I agree, though it isn't always possible to stick to just one. But I try.

Lynlee, your take on the PM is interesting. I'll admit my analyses that she'll lose the next election (the PM-ship, not her seat) was based on recent news articles, although the Economist has also had a steady, relatively negative, coverage. The problem with both sources is that, when I judge using my own country's political scene, they tend to have a slant that doesn't reflect the people's will. Certainly, the media still can't figure out why people keep electing our PM and GW Bush's second win came as a surprise to the media in the US as well. All three are physically big countries with the media concentrated in only spot so they seem to miss what is happening outside of their home areas.

On the ship, the Aussies I talked with are all medium to large business-owners and so want a PM who would further their money-making schemes. What surprised me is that their attack was based on her looks, not based on her policies. They sounded like old-fashioned male chauvinists, something I don't come across here often at all. At least not so openly. Of course, here, I don't socialize with the super successful business owners because I don't belong to a country club, or any major 'societies' (arts groups, charitable fundraising groups) where people like that gather. The business people I run into tend to mostly run mom&pop businesses where women are equal partners.

I did my physio and washed up the dishes. Next I'll flip the laundry and bring in the garbage cans. And then head to bed. Dh's movie is over and I can hear him yawning while at his computer.

Just finished watching "The Hiding Place". Excellent movie. I remember some talk about the book here a while back. I missed this movie when it came out in 1975.

I've finished the do over sewing project. Went back to Joann's and got more fabric long enough this time thread too so it was all on sale yea! She picked out a fun pink and celery green flannel with butterfly print she calls her butterfly blanket. I had dgd give the gal our number and then after we had it priced out she proudly carried the fabric to the front of the store and the thread we go for it too. I also go some white thread. When she left tonight she wanted to take it home and walked all slumped over kind of down cast b/c she had to leave it behind! I'm SO glad to have that done now she can use it. Now I suppose I need to load up some bobbins.

I was right this cold weather is good for getting the house work done, it's just to dang cold to be outside much.

I did get the hen's water changed and they & the chicks are all tucked in for the night.

H. worked late and is having dinner now while he watches his fav. Fri. night show.

Kathryn - Here the Liberals are the capitalists, and they love to have the power over all things of business and Labour. Labour rights and workers are not their concern. Personally - many times the PM's speeches make me cringe. I do think she has done many wrong. I wish she would wear sensible shoes. Sometimes the party seems to be trying to be more like the Liberals. Bottom line - I'll go with policies to make my last of the big 2 vote ... possibly putting others ahead in protest but bottom line is someone needs 51% of vote in an electorate to win.
Many states have chucked out labour from governing at state level, and the result is a hideous majority, and dare I add, hideous policies. The people may well do that federally. Aiming to teach a lesson ??? And the results .. we will have to live with.
From our state - plan is centralise birthing suites. Its not like you need them around the region after all. 90-120 minutes (my guess) apart in the crowded area here - not exactly an unpopulated backwater - is the plan for public hospitals in my area. Its going from centrally placed to coastal. I guess they don't consider sea level rises important. An area with the greatest population growth in the state. 40 new families a week - from memory. Don't try to find a place to rent. Maybe a change in govt will change the plan, but it will take a lot for those out-sted to get back in. Not enough there to field a cricket team.
