We are back home. I'm exhausted but it was a very good day.
We got to the Arts Centre and the orKIDStra stringed group (a children's orchestra) was just starting. They played for about a half hour in the lobby. There were other activities as well, bell ringing, a keyboard you play by jumping on it, crafts to make and a map of the world marking Vienna and Ottawa.
Dd and dsil arrived just as the lights were dimming the first time to tell us to take our seats. We were standing half way up a staircase, watching for them, and a little girl at the top called out "Daddy!" Dh literally transported in time back 25 years and spun around to greet his daughter. Except it wasn't his daughter and he came hurtling back to 2015. He's still struck by how that one sound transported him through time. Distracted by that, dd and dsil actually came right up to us on the staircase without us seeing them come in.
The boys were good for the concert, especially since I didn't know it was bilingual - presented 3/4 in English, 1/4 in French. Dh, dd and the middle boy understood it all, the rest of us only caught a word here or there of the French, partly due to the speed. My knowing the story helped me a lot and the actors acted out what they were saying as much as they could but there was little repeat unless it was a particularly important point to the story.
Afterwards we walked 4 blocks and had beavertails, then sent a note to the parents to meet us at the restaurant. Dd and dsil took off by bus and arrived just 3 minutes after us (the boys still had to finish their Beavertails and then we walked back to the car.) We had a delightful dinner, lasting almost 2 hours.
Then we drove dd and dsil home and came home ourselves. We won't be going to church in the village tomorrow, but will try out our closest United Church. Not sure it will be a good fit. The building is also where my classes are and the sanctuary doesn't feel like home to me. The congregation is affirming (which is 'code' for welcoming outcasts, especially LGBQT members, but those with addictions as well) so it will be an adjustment from our white, upper middle class, current church home. I have a lot of friends that attend the church and our neighbour has been trying it out as well, so we'll know people there and I did move into the city in order to be part of a mission church. It is time to start considering a switch and to start church shopping (there are two mission churches and two middle-class within a reasonable drive from here - all are larger than our current church.)
I'm on the treadmill now, just topping off the steps for the day and working off the dinner. I didn't have a beavertail to myself, but had bites of each of the others.
