The day was semi productive. I got the rest of yesterday's list finished except for taking the car to the car wash. It really needs it but I can't be bothered as the trees at the cottage will just mess it up again next week.

I chatted for an hour with dh before he headed to bed. I had wanted to debrief him about my sister.

I got the desk into the car although it was not as easy as dh had lead me to believe. He had told me it would fit on the back seat just fine. I had questioned if the doors would open enough to get it in and I was right. On the other hand, it was an easy check and fix because of the way I got it downstairs. Thankfully, I had thought to load all the drawers into the wagon to take those down when I went to get the dolly. Once the wagon was loaded, I realized I could put the desk upside down on top of them as they formed a smooth surface. As I said, the desk is light and I was able to, eventually, pick it up while it was upside down and slide it onto the drawers. Once I was at the car, the desk was at the exact level to slide into the car and it took no lifting to quickly determine it couldn't fit through the door so I pulled the wagon to the back of the car, lowered the back seats, then slid the desk onto the mat I have in the back to catch leaking milk or cooler condensation, and then slid the mat into the back seat area so the slanted hatch-back would close. I then pulled the mat out enough to put the drawers into the desk, having realized I didn't have room for the loose drawers in the rest of the car (!) and pushed it back in.

So it was one trip down and up, not two. Yay!

Since then, I've puttered away at filling in the desk area. I had an old folding table my dad had used on the cabin cruiser so I brought it in from the balcony bin and covered it with contact paper and put plants on it. I also brought in plant stands that were outside for the summer and set them up. So there's lots of room for plants in the sunny window (and it gets a newly started ficus off the kitchen table.) I then ordered some plant stakes because everything is growing very well right now and my jade plant needs serious staking (I may have overwatered it by accident but it isn't staying upright now that I moved it.)

Now it is time to heat up some dinner for myself. First, I'll put a potato in the oven to bake and then figure out what I'm having with it.

It was stuffed-animal surgery day, and Tigee had his back seam stitched up. DgdC needs to hear from him that jungle cats like to be at high, safe places where they can avoid goldendoodles. Tigee is one of those hairy - as opposed to furry - animals and that fabric is a challenge to hand-sew.

helia, the gift and wrap sounds ideal - just writing "for baby" rather than names would be quite nice. Have fun at party.

I also did some watering outside, but there is nowhere near the occupation out there that LadyM finds - definitely winding down from the spring and summer chores.

DS16 has finished 2 of his planned events but his pickup is still parked in my side of the driveway. He has 2 friends here to help him reassemble it. I heard lots of banging as if they were using a sledge hammer. I'm thinking that isn't a sign of it going well. However, the banging has stopped and they just walked over to a neighbors house to see if he had any words of advice.

One of DS16 friends came to ask if he could buy one of our vehicles. We gave him a really good deal and will carry the note using a handshake for the few hundred that he is short. I am 10000% confident in his integrity to pay us back.

I gave DD13 three tasks to do today. She was not happy about one of them, but she didn't grumble. She had a good attitude and just dug in and got them done.

I know I am biased but the teens really are awesome humans. They are non-stop active, they want to eat several times a day, they are noisy and tend to be messy. But overall they are fun to be around. I am thankful their moments of drama are few and far between.

Dinner was good but plain. A baked potato, slice of meatloaf, and some frozen corn heated up. It was also easy. I had an apple with some Nutella on it for dessert.

I've done some more tidying and cleaned the microwave and toaster oven. I think I shall head off to bed early. I need to leave by 10 but there's a cheque for me at the church I should pick up on my way so will leave earlier than that so I can pop in before service.

I also got two more loads of laundry done. I couldn't remember which, if any, of the bunk bed sheets I had already washed up at the cottage so have washed everything here. Most of that is also put away.

I'm now to the point of wondering where to put things we had at the cottage. I can't just get rid of them because I'll need some of them next year. There was the rope I used as a clothes line which I've set aside and I hope to make room for a bin in the storage locker so I can start a bin for things like that that will only be used there.

As well, removing the desk means I have to find a place for the contents of its 5 drawers. In theory it should be easy as it almost all of 4 of them fit into one 13" square open bin. The contents of the big drawer were extension cords and light timers so I put those in the power bar bin. I think I can put the birthday decorations in a box and store with the gift wrapping supplies. But the rest is special stationery supplies and a number of odds and sods that don't really fit elsewhere. As this is my childhood desk, there are a few items that have been in it over 55 years, like my large shooter marble (my other marbles, both literal and figurative, are long gone apparently.) There's a Ponds Face Cream container that has brads for fastening papers (or craft things) together.

I suppose what I need to do is a purge of the craft supplies for the grands, the odds and sods set of drawers in the kitchen, and the odds and sods cupboard in the kitchen and then incorporate the rest of my desk contents in with them, rather than keep them separate from the supplies for the grands. My dmil had a tiny house and yet, while dh and his siblings were growing up always had the craft supplies that were needed, tucked away. When we cleaned out her house, she had a couple of each item that might be needed, i.e. paper towel tubes. I think I have at least 15 paper bags for making puppets, for instance. Her gift was knowing what would be enough and always having just that much, instead of saving everything 'just in case it is needed.'

On that inspiring memory, I shall head to bed.

Ramblin', I was thinking about your post about historic flooding. I have seen rare, grainy, historic photographs of similar-looking flooding in Western NC/Eastern TN. But the memory of such a thing is so old, and so predates current infrastructure, the extensive systems of dams, even WPA/TVA erosion/drainage projects, etc., that I don't know how such old historic evidence could have translated into a coherent warning for 2024. I had been encouraged by the early comments of how fast-moving the storm was, with the inference that not so much water would be dumped in any one area. I'm not sure what happened with that prediction.

Best to you as you do your wise preparations for that next possibility of hurricane damage. Hoping you and dh will stay snug and safe.
