Hello everyone!
Helian, to add to the confusion, the UK is a kind of "hybrid" between metrics and the old imperial. Petrol is sold in litres, but the efficiency of a car is measured in how many miles it does to the (UK) gallon. Most food is sold in grams , although milk is usually sold inultipmes.of pints (with the equivalent amount in litres on the side of the carton). Beer in pubs is sold in (UK ) pints because "it always has been" and to attempt ma change would probably cause a riot.
Also, for the practical reason that apparently 1/2 a litre isn't "enough" or satisfying, and whole litre is too much. Road distances are.still measured in miles (probably because it would be far too expensive to re do all the signposts. But I think some of the best examples are in the carpenters' trade. Wood is now usually sold in lengths of multiples of a metre, but the width is still often .measured in inches. So we can have the situation is where someone will ask for " 3 metres of 4 by 2, please". Which means a piece of wood 4 inches by 2 inches, but three metres long!! Somehow we muddle through. Growing up when I did, I'm "fluent" in both grams and kilograms admin pounds and ounces, which comes in handy when cooking.
KitKat, that's quite an adventure with the bat!
Harriet, I'm very flattered that you felt your DD would be interested in my little account!
I think growing up I had the best of both worlds. Old enough to understand and experience my heritage, but young enough to readily adapt to the " new" system.
Hi, Peaches!
It's just gone 10 pm and I'm finally in from the garden. I didn't get out there until quite late as it's no fun fitting the grass and doing other knobs.in the heat. My pots were still surprisingly quite damp from yesterday's w as watering, so I see decided to leave feeding them until tomorrow. But I did trim the bits on the hedge, cut the grass, deadhead and sweep the patio and back steps,.and have my tiny front garden a really good soaking with the hose.
Everyone has been fed, and DH has already gone to bed. I think it's time.for me to lock up and take the cats upstairs with me.
