Cathy, she was worse on the cruise because she was not at her own home with familiar surroundings. She will always do best in her own home, because she will constantly find "landmarks", both physical and emotional. (Husband leaves her sight and an emotional landmark is gone, confusion results, etc.) This lack of familiarity is the reason for "sundowning", the phenomenon in which confusion gets much worse when darkness falls and the windows don't give the same clues from nature any more, either. Supplements that seem to have helped in my caregiving experience (look these up yourself) : fish oil, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin D, coconut oil (in foods). Supplement (unknown years ago) that I might start if I were beginning with a new situation now : astaxanthin. Some say exercise - it hasn't proven true in my family caregiving experience, BUT has proven to be wonderful for general health, which makes general caregiving easier. A warning - be careful of dementia medicines that have the side effect of diarrhea. They are NOT kidding. Two of my aunts, not kin to each other, ended up in the hospital from complications of diarrhea within 36 hours of the first dose of Ari-cept. Instead of help, setbacks that were huge.
Stove parts - are you talking about an electric stove with burner rings and bowls? These can just be replaced. TaDa. But maybe that's not what you mean.
Gotta go...
