Harriet: My cards used to be laid out on a counter (in fact, when we renovated this kitchen, we built a specific counter for them.) So having them out isn't a big deal to me. But the purpose of this in my life would be for the scraps of paper all over my desk and the wall behind the desk. I'd put the info on cards (or paper if it holds) and then stack them in the bleachers. The slot is tight enough that they can be moved, the slight curve in the design keeps the cards from falling over.

A number of people use cards to design a work-flow, plot-line, or large event with multiple steps, and put the cards in the holder which can the be moved around (i.e. from table to desk, to kitchen counter, to bathroom counter. They found that meant they could glance at the flow represented in the cards while in the design phase and spot problems or possibilities for improvement.

I've used cards for projects like that (the biggest was when we had a large amount of international travel and I nested lots of airline tickets within each other to get the cheapest flights.) In cases like that, I put them up on the wall with funtak so I can move them around. This was more to get scrap paper clutter off my desk.

A cheaper version is just two dowels banded together. I demonstrated that with two highlighter pens to dh. The problem is getting the cards in (although a slight spacer could have solved that) and, of course, you don't end up with bleachers, just one level (unless you mount successive sets of dowels on a slightly higher base (or maybe use a series of thicker dowels.) A cheaper, but smaller, manufactured version is just something for holding playing cards. I found those when I started looking for a cheaper solution.

I have long loved the Levenger bleacher... dmil gets their catalog, for reasons I know not... but oh my! Waaay waaay too expensive for me!!! And like Harriet said, much too "public" a display. If I could not put the bleacher on my bathroom vanity, then it would not work for me! But -- as Kathryn said -- out of sight IS out of mind for me, too, and I have a real problem working from cards for that reason. I want them ALL laid out on display at once... and space is tight.

And yes, Tgiving here would probably be a good plan if I could conquer my nerves, but dh has pretty adamantly nixed that idea. * sheesh * Shouldn't have even brought it up while he is feeling so miserable... but I just casually asked if he thought his dmom would come over here if we had all of my family here... and he just had a come apart. ALL THOSE PEOPLE HERE??? Remember... my family does number... let's see... 29. That's if EVERYONE is there... and counting dgs. My brother and his girlfriend will not be there... but 27 people, plus dmil & dbil is quite a crowd. OTOH, we hosted the whole thundering herd for ds's graduation party. I don't see why Tgiving is any different, but dh says it is.

DGS has roamed the house for 30 minutes; now he is in his playpen, throwing toys out of it.

I edited my previous post with these thoughts but decided I'd post here, too.

I have the "Jotter", the C.R. Gibson competition to Levinger's "Essential Pocket Briefcase" (3x5 card holder), which I found for just a few dollars at Tuesday Morning. In honesty, it's so pretty, I have been "keeping it for good", which is SO like my mother. I should just get some use out of it.

As far as the Levinger cards themselves, their use seems comparable to those found at office supply stores - I use gridded ones all the time, for instance, and just add my own wording. But still, this site may be one we should add to Cardfile Central links. They really take the 3 x 5 to new heights, if their wording or particular way of gridding/forms happens to work for someone. Also if their ways of carrying/displaying happens to work.

I liked looking through the Levenger website. I liked the 3x5 pocket thing that showed up on the linked page. I have a calendar planner, Day-Timer Family Plus that I use mainly to record upcoming appointments, birthdays, family's events, etc. I use the 3x5s and household notebook for household chores, although sometimes I don't even look at the cards but work from memory and just do what needs to be done. It would be nice to be able to afford things like the Levenger items. The same goes for the other brands in that price range.

I meant to tell you, Harriet, that I tried the keys to both my file cabinets in both cabinets and they didn't fit each other. Had they worked in both cabinets I could have sent you one, thinking they might have worked in yours also. (I had two for each cabinet, and I rarely lock them).

Hmmm... amazon does have some nice playing card holders for around $15... I might look into that when I start doing Christmas shopping... (for myself!)

I've entered all the scraps of paper notes into a file called Odds and Sods and put that in my dropbox so it can be accessed from the my computer, my tablet and my phone. I really need to decide what to do about the tablet - it isn't really mine but I'm starting to develop routines around it. For instance, I check FB first thing in the morning using it. It doesn't have any phone or data so I feel safer using it than I do my smart phone. Not sure why, but I do.

I'm starting to take it with me when I go out since it is easier to read than my phone and now I've started added files from my computer to it via dropbox. Today I discussed buying a Bible for it as well, since it is lighter to carry than my Bible when I travel but the print would be readable. If I do that, then I'm committing to this tablet because I have to invest money it it. Except it isn't mine, it belongs to ds, I'm just using it while he's gone.

DH and I are watching the CMA awards show (I think I got the correct initials), until "Criminal Minds" and "CSI" come on. I'm writing letters, the rain storm's hit heavy, but the winds haven't arrived yet. We're running the DW now, don't need to go anywhere tomorrow, except DH will mail snail mail out, bring the garbage can home, and check mail later. He'll also be bringing in firewood on and off for the indoor bin.

Tomorrow, I hope to finish up on letters and work on stories. If we get a power outage, I'll write by hand. I was told to use a laptop on generator power is not a good thing. So I hope we'll keep our power.
