Write it down Wednesday PWYC

Write it down! LadyM uses a "hip pad" to capture fleeting thoughts on busy days. Lucylee writes us an essay every evening (according to dgd, lol!) Most of use a list at one time or another, whether it's for to-dos or for groceries.

From Google ai:
Writing things down boosts memory retention, reduces mental clutter, and clarifies thinking. This process, called "encoding," engages multiple brain regions—like motor, language, and sensory centers—far more deeply than typing or just thinking. It acts as an external storage system, freeing up cognitive bandwidth.

today is phone call day - lots of appointments and letters to write. Planning
dog pool - bird baths - 12" x 12"
dead head
anti procrastination day

- I wanted to run something by you all re: a price on my front door
we had siding put on the house this spring and we "want" a new front door - we have a double door in the front - wood and looks bad as well as a another door - like a storm/screen door (also double).
We had a man come from a company that is one of the ones that are mentioned all the time around here. The price started out at $20,000  and then his price for us was almost $17,000! I had figured $8,000 based on my research but I was gobsmacked by this.
I couldn't believe it. Am I being unrealistic with the prices.
A new roof for us would be $15,000 - why would a door be $17,000

Blessed, that price does sound very high! I had a look to see what a wooden front door here in the UK would cost, and this was the result I got:

"A new wooden double front door in the UK typically costs between £900 and £3,500 for supply-only door and frame sets. If you include professional installation, custom sizing, or high-end bespoke joinery, total prices can range from £4,000 to £6,000+.

Cost Breakdown by Quality and Type
Budget / Standard Hardwood Sets: £900 – £1,500 (supply-only hardwood or standard oak veneer pairs with frames, often unfinished or factory-dip treated).
Mid-Range / Engineered Oak or Sidelight Sets: £1,600 – £2,500 (engineered timber core options with double glazing, multi-point locking systems, and factory finishes).
High-End / Bespoke & Fully Installed: £3,000 – £6,000+ (custom-built solid oak, specialized acoustic/thermal ratings, or complete specialized architectural installations).

Additional Costs to Anticipate:
Installation Labour: £300 – £800 depending on structural alterations needed for a double-door opening.
Hardware & Security: £50 – £250 for heavy-duty hinges, multi-point night latches, handles, and British Standard security locks.
Finishing: £100 – £300 if the doors are supplied unfinished and require professional micro-porous staining or painting to validate weather-proof guarantees."

Now, if you were having both the front door and the storm doors replaced with very high quality custom built solid oak doors, then I could see the bill edging up towards the quote you were given. But if you're going for a mid range option, then , No.🚪

DGD just came in here and said, "Why do you have to write an essay every day?" Good night, all. - lucylee

Because of everything in the essay, like dgd made the serve that led to the winning point, and all her teammates were jumping up and down, and all the other things vitally important for us all to know. Congratulations to dgd.

It's ENCODING. It's FREEING UP COGNITIVE BANDWIDTH.

Wow, Twins', you found a really helpful explanation there.

"... .. clarifies thinking... .."
Yes, this. When dreading a potentially difficult moment you see coming - confrontational or just awkward - prepare by planning and writing down that one sentence you want to be sure to say. It will be easier to remember in the moment because you once wrote it.

Waving back to blessed and household.
Door question - although I do not know prices, I can tell you that, for me, I would have to decide to forego that door, for the same reason you mentioned. Other big expenditures don't seem in line with that one. We had the big expenditures of HVAC, roof, floors refinished, full interior painting. As I think of those and how much of a difference each made compared to how much they had to cost, I couldn't see that much for a door. Our floor refinishing was $3,000 for 6 rooms, for instance, took days. I suppose the fact that it is a double door is a big factor... .. but I'm just not an expert.

Kittykatt, ah, those things we do for the reasons that make so much sense looking back! I remember the reason I used to express, for sticking to exercise, was NOT that I liked exercise but that I liked how I felt BECAUSE I had exercised. (sigh - wishing for a quicker return to that!)

Listening for an update on dgsC's wisdom tooth extraction. Ddolder was very optimistic last evening - he's expected to have a relatively easy time compared to his older brothers.

A priority today is to make a grocery list, possibly get groceries in today, depending.
Another is sweeping and mopping in kitchen and bathrooms.

Since Monday was a wash, with nothing done around here while we were gone, the week seems cramped. And tomorrow we're headed back in the same direction, although for only one appt.

I'm so ditzy these days. Realized yesterday should have been ta da Tuesday with anti procrastination activities today. Anyway, I liked yesterday's quote and the idea that even if we don't feel like it, we can choose to just do it.

I need to do some writing and perhaps crafting today. I have the entire day into evening to myself. I did a lot of research upstairs yesterday and managed to settle some questions. A guy who used name J. N. White purchased land was it James N or John N or something else altogether? Anyway, I'm pretty sure it wasn't my guy, James.

I've walked the dog, and I'm sweaty. Went up the hill to the the small cul de sac, then back to the circle to finish figure 8. Feels like 90 degrees already but a little cooler than yesterday, when "feel like" hit 110.

I have laundry going.

I'm writing it down for accountability. Last Friday when I was at a stopping point with getting hosts etc. for events with rabbi, V told me that someone had taken the 27th of August, and because it was late Friday afternoon and nearing Shabbat I didn't follow up. And I didn't do Sunday or Monday either. And V didn't either. So we ended up with two events on same date, now three so two need rescheduling. And I let the rabbi know that 13 August was tentative with S, and the rabbi scheduled someone else for the date. So V and I have massively made a mess. The rabbi has given us more dates to need to work on that.

I just let cemetery contractor know that check is at the office for him to pick up.

And I need to follow my own advice and write it all down!

Good morning

I’ve switched to using an 8x11" spiral notebook that sits open next to my keyboard for daily writing most of the time. I keep the leather 3x5" notebook nearby so I can easily grab it when I need to be more mobile while capturing information. Somedays I don't write much and other days I can fill pages. It all depends on what is happening and my mental capacity to capture it. What I have learned is when i stop writing then i will soon find myself overwhelmed. The information that Twin posted describes it perfectly = freeing up cognitive bandwidth

Harriet - is your grandchild having all wisdom teeth removed?

DH has a dental appointment this afternoon to fix a cavity. He has 4 cavities but they only do one cavity at a time. I wonder why? I'll ask when I take him to this appt.

DS17 had 3 prescriptions sent to pharmacy but only 2 were showing ready. I called to see why and they need a coupon for Wegovy. Without coupon my monthly cost is $1600+. With coupon it is $149. The pharmacy told me to how to get coupon myself or I can come in and he will help me get the coupon. So that errand will be added to the stops we do while in the city.

DS17 and friend are continuing with doing odd jobs I have listed on 3x5" cards. Yesterday they worked on clearing the fenceline on the north side of our property. It has many trees, shrubs, and vines that have grown there. I lost count how many trailers loads they filled with branches/trees and emptied at the burn pit. They started out using our trailer which is only about 16'. They switched to using a 36' trailer yesterday. Last night DS17 went and rented a dump trailer they are using today. They don't seem to be affected by the 110F temps. Young bodies are amazing.

Trying to be productive. Sometimes you just don't want to do things!

I have followed up on a few texts. One more to go. Left a phone message. Filed online the annual report for the HOA, and paid using my credit card. Printed receipt so I can reimburse myself for it. Verified that check is ready at temple, verified that deposit is for cemetery, verified that contract for lighting is for cemetery. I got my email box down to fifty emails.

I think I'm going to work on cemetery Excel spreadsheet of income/expense for the quarter that ended 30 June. Tomorrow I need to get by cemetery after my workout. The tree company is to be finishing up work this week and need to check that. And a few other things there, lol.

Nancy, is it a cold or is the smoke getting to you? You're one who is writing every day!

How wonderful to have ds doing those odd jobs these days, LadyM! My planner pages are 1/2 the size of 8.5 by 11 sheets, I can take it in my purse most days.

Yep Harriet, I'm loving the explanation:
It's ENCODING. It's FREEING UP COGNITIVE BANDWIDTH.
bw2, I'm in agreement about the price for the door. I'd get another estimate...
