Re: Aunt Sammy Sunday
Aunt Sammy was a fictional character created by the Bureau of Home Economics of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for a popular radio show called Housekeepers' Chat. Its target audience was farm wives.
The fifteen-minute radio program was first broadcast on October 4, 1926, and by 1932, 194 stations carried it. Though the government-sponsored series lasted until 1946, the Aunt Sammy character was not used after 1934.
Aunt Sammy was the wife of Uncle Sam. Other family members and friends included Ebenezer, an uncle; Billy, a nephew; Percy DeWillington, a fussy eater, and the Nosy Neighbor.
In 1927, three women at the USDA collaborated to prepare content for each episode. Fanny Walker Yeatman tested recipes and conducted research on foods; Josephine Hemphill wrote the chatty portions; Ruth Van Deman coordinated the menus and recipes.
Each fifteen-minute episode was divided into three five-minute sections. "Backyard Gossip" might discuss nutrition, health, clothing, gardening, home life or social activities. "Questions Women are Asking" would answer an actual question sent to Aunt Sammy, but only if the answer would be of general interest. "What Shall We Have for Dinner?" gave ingredients and instructions for preparing well-balanced, easily prepared, and inexpensive menus.
Every radio station broadcasting the series had its own Aunt Sammy, each using a standardized script.[7] The performers were selected to emulate local accents and speech patterns.[8] The book Engines of Our Ingenuity stated: "Aunt Sammy wasn’t the voice of a single woman, but hundreds of women working from scripts at their respective radio stations. Her persona talked about clothing, furniture, appliances — all sprinkled with world affairs. But her most enduring legacy derived from what she had to say about food.
The USDA received so many requests for Aunt Sammy’s recipes that they were published in a pamphlet. It was an immediate hit — so popular that the USDA printed revised and expanded versions three times in just five years." The show included jokes, commentary on the news and household advice, but its main focus was to help rural women prepare nutritious meals based on simple recipes] Letters from listeners — more than 25,000 in four months — helped to determine the programs' content.
Morse Salisbury, who was chief of the radio service fee for the USDA, was responsible for the friendly, chatty style of the Aunt Sammy character. According to Salisbury, "The first injunction laid upon the radio speaker is to be entertaining and natural and friendly".[8] Sammy would comment on current events, such as the 1926 visit of Queen Marie of Romania to the United States, which took place shortly after the show premiered. "Queen Marie of Rumania is visiting my town this week," said Aunt Sammy. "She didn't come to America especially to see me, but I thought she might drop in to discuss household problems. I have a new recipe, called Peach Dainty, that I've been saving for her. I am sure the King would like it, and the Prince and Princess, too."
In 1931, Aunt Sammy instructed listeners in authentic traditional Chinese cooking techniques, helping to improve the quality of Chinese-American food prepared by home cooks.
During the Great Depression the Aunt Sammy character stopped being used, and the radio program, renamed Homemaker Chats became "drier and more factual". The series was discontinued in 1946

Re: Aunt Sammy Sunday
Good morning Kitty! That was interesting about Aunt Sammy - I did a quick skim. Great SHEM. Have a good morning at church. Will your new vicar (?) preach today?
Yes, trissie, so many museums in Paris! Now I want to go back. . . Perhaps in cooler weather. The heat here has really zapped me. I can't believe I used to live in Texas no problem!
I speak very little Spanish, kitkat. It is clear we are tourists and most people we encounter immediately speak to us in English, so we don't even get an opportunity to try speaking Spanish. Also, locals here speak Catalan - similar to Spanish but not the same. One time I was able to ask where the bathroom was in Spanish. And sometimes I could interpret for dh who seems to fall back on speaking French. LOL! Also, I can read a few words here and there. It is clear my French is much stronger and more deeply ingrained; the longer we were in France, the more came trickling back into my brain.
Yesterday afternoon, we went to the Barcelona history museum. It was extremely interesting - we went straight for the Roman ruins that are underground. We never even finished that section, let alone get to the rest of the museum. Both dh and I enjoy seeing Roman ruins - a lot! Our dinner reservation was early at 6 pm - but very delicious! We got the initial repacking done after that.
I'm up and about early for me today. Our taxi is arriving at 8:30. It is now 7:45. I have done my back exercises, showered, and done most of my self care. I still need to put on some make up, brush my teeth, and moisturize my feet. Then, I need to finish packing the last minute toiletry items + qt items - if I have time for a quick qt. I'm working on my cuppa coffee now.
And charging my phone.
Our flight is at 11- something. We land in Amsterdam at 1:30 and then our international flight to Detroit is at 2:30. We have to go through customs and immigration in that time.
That's tight - I hope we make our connection. If not, we'll just hang out with dh's sister in Utrecht and catch a flight tomorrow.
Next:
- finish self care
- pack up toiletries
- empty dw; kitchen in order
Later:
- load a jigsaw puzzle on my laptop
- quick qt? Or I can do this on the plane
- message bnb owner we're out

Re: Aunt Sammy Sunday
Thank you for starting us off, Kittykatt. Have a good time at church.
I'm glad that you got to see the Roman ruins, helia. Safe trip home!
I definitely should go shopping today, to get a mat for the front entrance. The one that Germane peed on is the one that I park my handtrucks on when they track in dust or mud, etc. so it should be replaced. I want to make a point of making at least one trip to the lockers downstairs, maybe a couple of trips there. Those are the main things.
Sunday
Put away dry dishes
Cleaned up after dog

Re: Aunt Sammy Sunday
Did you get a new front mat, Doggedly?
On the plane - feeling sleepy. I don't really watch movies on planes anymore. I did finish the payroll I needed to do. And I worked on a sudoku, updated my time sheet the best I could, and ate an airplane food lunch. It's a 8.3 hour flight and we're not quite halfway. . . I'm already bored.
Dh is working nonstop.
Our first flight was late, so we got to that gate at about 1:45. Our next flight started boarding at 1:35.
Fortunately, we were sitting toward the front of the plane so we exited pretty quickly. We walked briskly, went through immigration and customs (leaving the EU) quickly, and made it on our flight just fine! Also fortunately, the gate was close to customs and immigration. . . Someone is looking out for us.
I think I'm going to read a bit. I'll probably nod off - that's OK.

- messaged bnb owner
- through security - all done by 9:20 for a 11:10 flight
- had a short qt in the airport
- fly to Amsterdam; rush through airport but easily catch next flight
- payroll: finished master spreadsheet - end of session curr review teacher comments
- payroll: update timesheet - I think I missed some hours for exam prep -- oh, well
- ate lunch

Re: Aunt Sammy Sunday
Morning kittykatt. Have a good trip home, helian. I think the water is brackish, Dogged. It is the mouth of the river and empties into the Chesapeake Bay and then the Atlantic Ocean. According to the internet they are migratory bottlenose dolphins and like the calmer river water from May to late August when they head back to the ocean.

Re: Aunt Sammy Sunday
Thanks for the start, kittykatt, I had never heard of Aunt Sammy before. The wife of Uncle Sam
helia, I hope you have a safe rest of your journey home.
L.ann, I wondered about dolphins in the river. Thanks for the explanation.
doggedly, I hope you found an appropriate mat.
Yesterday, said goodbye to the summer tenant (who left the place in NEED of attention before someone can move in. I had told him I would wash the bedding, but had requested that he clean the stove (which I had to take the burners out and hand him an SOS pad so that he did it - I think he comes from money and probably his mother had a cleaning lady and he didn't have to do much at home. He thought he left it clean. (Next time I will charge a cleaning fee up front.)
while the washer was running, I went through 1 drawer in Mother's kitchen. Tossed out 4 years old catalogues. "Low hanging fruit"
A trip to the funeral home to pay respects to the family of a neighbor who had died, and no church service planned.
Then an hour touring the elegant Victorian house managed by our county historical society. It's only 2 blocks from the funeral home, and only open every-other Saturday afternoon in the summer.
Came home with great plans to go through papers, do some filing, take a walk - but instead had a 2 hour nap!
Today,
Had a good night sleep
Good church service
Goals
Now home - need to do a Sunday brunch for myslef
Change clothes
Unload DW
Discipline myself to get to that paperwork
And come back to post when I have accomplished that
