The sitar is a traditional plucked string instrument originating from the Indian subcontinent, central to Hindustani classical music. Known for its deep, resonant, and shimmering sound, it gained global recognition in the 1960s through the works of virtuoso Ravi Shankar and its adoption by Western rock bands like The Beatles.

A sitar features a long, hollow neck made of toon or teak wood, a primary resonator gourd (tumba) at the base, and sometimes a smaller secondary gourd near the top. A standard sitar typically has 18 to 21 strings. This includes 6 or 7 playable main strings and a layer of 11 to 13 sympathetic strings (taras) running underneath the frets that vibrate automatically to create a natural reverb. It uses movable, curved brass frets that allow the player to fine-tune the scale and pull the strings sideways to achieve a gliding note effect known as meend.

Players wear a wire plectrum called a mizrab on the index finger of their dominant hand to pluck the strings.

Sitars have two main styles (Gharanas): Ravi Shankar Style (Maihar Gharana) is characterised by a deeper, bass-rich tone, often featuring a second tumba gourd and an extra bass string (laraj). In contrast, Vilayat Khan Style (Imdadkhani Gharana) focuses on mimicking the human singing voice (gayaki ang). These sitars are usually lighter, lack the upper tumba, and have fewer strings.

Just my usual quick Sunday CI. Today we're doing the coffees after church. I never made it back yesterday, but I spent almost the whole day in the garden, and ,. although there's a lot more to do before winter,.I'm pleased with progress so far!

Interesting SHEM, I'm very fond of new beginnings as they go along with a "clean slate" impulse (whatever happened in the past, let's forget), but there are days that feel like the follow-up of anterior beginnings and there's comfort in that sometimes too, reaping the fruit of yesterday's (or earlier) momentum to feel on track.

Grey morning. Getting started on some to-dos. Not going to the Aikido-Aikitaiso free course at 10am as I initially intended : I will (maybe) go to a trial class on a Tuesday night class instead, as those are grown-ups only : it should be quieter and a better opportunity to make-up my mind about enrolling.

Still good morning, as I type this, though by the time I hit submit, it may already be afternoon here
I wanted to get up early and be productive today, but my body said "nope, not doing that today, we're catching up on sleep" and so that's what I did, not waking up till 11am. I mean... I could probably sleep straight through to December and be just about caught up, so one night is not cutting it, but sure it felt nice! I just hope that extra sleep will not prevent me from falling asleep tonight, as my sleep is seriously messed up

Anyway, it's still plum time - though I am down to one basket - and I need to change bedding and do something about the garden. DBD is running low grade fever, so no school for her tomorrow and another day of home office for me. Not too happy about it, but at least I forgot to send an email requesting an in-person meeting for Monday afternoon, so my calendar is free.

Frenchie, so will your boys have any of those Saturday sports lessons that had been on your calendar last year?
kittykatt, soon the weather will not be up to any gardening, so we better enjoy that while we can!

Good afternoon trissie ! If your body let you sleep until 11 am, it's probably a sign you badly needed it. Good luck with the remaining plums. I hope DBD has nothing serious. Less time commuting tomorrow will mean more sleep for you, hopefully - or do the other kids need you up in order to be ready for their days ?
As for the sports schedules, it's still a question mark. DS8 didn't enjoy the handball class so much last year, DS10 doesn't really want to go back to the athletics practice, so my Saturday mornings may be much different. MrNG is thinking he could drive them to the swimming pool once a week, or do something with them on those Saturdays. I really hope we find something to fill some of their weekend mornings with, or they will end up 'doing screens' i.e. doing nothing and consuming useless videos.

It's a sunny morning now. MrNG has spent some time gardening and is now working on his "memoir", not sure how you name a university like essay of 20-30 pages. He has to hand it over around 25 September. The other people at his training class wrote it during the summer holidays (there were no classes then), but those with kids are only just starting now. He has a few more training days in [large city one hour away] in Sep and October before he gets his diploma. Already looking for jobs and applying, only refusals so far because he's been aiming a bit "higher" than what he can hope for as a beginner.
DS10 is now finished with his homework for Monday and Tuesday. I need to schedule more time with him this schoolyear. Not sure how / when... English and German especially will involve me more, MrNG can't really help with either.

Frenchie, I would still need to get up at the usual time, but I'd have to two hours of commute to my advantage. That's the plus side, the minus side is that of course working in the office means less interruption and being able to discuss things with people. But we shall still see.
I think you should have MrNiceGuy handle Saturday mornings this year and have yours free! Time sure flies, he's reaching the end of his course and it seems like yesterday when you were just thinking of him enrolling in it and what that would mean for your household!
