Naomi Shihab Nye was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Her father was a Palestinian refugee and her mother an American of German and Swiss descent, and Nye spent her adolescence in both Jerusalem and San Antonio, Texas.

Nye’s experience of both cultural difference and different cultures has influenced much of her work. Known for poetry that lends a fresh perspective to ordinary events, people, and objects, Nye has said that, for her, “the primary source of poetry has always been local life, random characters met on the streets, our own ancestry sifting down to us through small essential daily tasks.” In her work, according to Jane Tanner in the Dictionary of Literary Biography, “Nye observes the business of living and the continuity among all the world’s inhabitants … She is international in scope and internal in focus.” Nye is also considered one of the leading female poets of the American Southwest. A contributor to Contemporary Poets wrote that she “brings attention to the female as a humorous, wry creature with brisk, hard intelligence and a sense of personal freedom unheard of” in the history of pioneer women.

Nye continues to live and work in San Antonio, Texas. “My poems and stories often begin with the voices of our neighbors, mostly Mexican American, always inventive and surprising,” Nye wrote for Four Winds Press. “I never get tired of mixtures.” A contributor to Contemporary Southern Writers wrote that Nye’s poetry “is playfully and imaginatively instructive, borrows from Eastern and Middle Eastern and Native American religions, and resembles the meditative poetry of William Stafford, Wallace Stevens, and Gary Snyder.”

Nye’s first two chapbooks were published in the 1970s. Both Tattooed Feet (1977) and Eye-to-Eye (1978) are written in free verse and structured around the theme of a journey or quest. They announced Nye as a “wandering poet,” one interested in travel, place, and cultural exchange. In her first full-length collection, Different Ways to Pray (1980), Nye explores the differences between, and shared experiences of, cultures from California to Texas, from South America to Mexico. In “Grandfather’s Heaven,” a child declares: “Grandma liked me even though my daddy was a Moslem.” As Tanner observed, “with her acceptance of different ‘ways to pray’ is also Nye’s growing awareness that living in the world can sometimes be difficult.”

Nye has been affiliated with the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas and poetry editor for the Texas Observer for over 20 years. She is a professor of creative writing at Texas State University. Nye told Contemporary Authors: “I have always loved the gaps, the spaces between things, as much as the things. I love staring, pondering, mulling, puttering. I love the times when someone or something is late—there’s that rich possibility of noticing more, in the meantime … Poetry calls us to pause. There is so much we overlook, while the abundance around us continues to shimmer, on its own.”

Good morning, everyone, and happy Sunday! The board is very glitchy again this morning, so I'll be brief. I did get the gate.meneded and painted yesterday - in answer to Trissie's question, the colour of the wood stain is "Dark Oak" , so a rich dark brown. Hard wearing.and doesn't show the dirt! DBIL has left - apparently they had a good time yesterday!

Wise SHEM. I was inspired by yesterday's SHEM as well (“It takes courage to recognize the real as opposed to the convenient.” Judi Dench). Sometimes I lurk during the workweek and read the SHEMs. I think I need more wisdom in my life, and it's not at payroll or with my kid that I will get any. Maybe I should read more books at bedtime. Or, better books.

The boards made it too difficult to post yesterday, but I did get some things done. It was a sunny Saturday and today will be sunny as well.
Thanks for listening to my payroll-related questioning. I want to not have regrets.
Interesting ideas about beets. I like grated beets (raw beets, grated like carrots), in a vinegar-y salad dressing. Never tried to roast beets, I would think it would be too sweet for my taste, but I may try one day.
Trissie, very intersting article about preserving and canning. I read only half actually. I do believe growing and canning one's own food was necessary during the DDR and other comunist systems, even though I never lived that myself, read a lot for German classes and did 2 trips in Eastern Germany. I wish I had a boiling-water canner myself. Here, most families preserve fruit in sugar and freeze veggies, but some do water canning in the huge canners - I wonder if you can easily buy one these days ?

helia, your kayaking adventures sound fun, even if a bit wet I think any kayak trip includes the risk of getting wet, but maybe you hoped you would stay dry, expecting the local river to be all calm and flat ?

Trying to see what I need to do today so the week is easier afterwards. Hopefully I can access and update the "weekly list" post.
There are two parent-teacher meetings this week., and payroll should be interesting on Monday and Friday (for various reasons, unrelated to my own choices).

Frenchie, I looked on amazon and there's plenty of hot bath canners, both the stovetop ones and the electric ones. I really enjoy the perks of an electric one because it allows me to set the temperature and the time (the countdown only starts when the bath with the cans reaches the temperature), so all I need to do is wait till it heats up to the "input temperatures" (my book on canning states those for various types of canning, because you need the contents of the jars to heat as well), then put in the jars, and remove them when it beeps. Even the local LIDL sells them in season

DH and DS went off to the cottage, so it's just me and the girls in the house. It's raining, so no garden work for me - it's OK, I did make progress yesterday, and it's fall anyways, so I can just let go and start over in the spring
I have three bowls of grapes to process, and I really, really want to get started on the holiday cleaning (I initially wrote baking! guess the holiday baking is more appealing to me than the cleaning ), so off I go!
