Winter Solstice Saturday

It's gray and rainy here and unseasonably warm. Some areas tho are getting hit with snow and ice. Either way, the days start getting longer again tomorrow, the days of darkness start to recede and we return to the light.

I always feel better with more light, longer days, and the fall is typically when I have some seasonal depression. Here's to personal health improvements with the coming year!

I can't complain about what I got done yesterday.

When I said yesterday that I was going to sit outside for a bit, it turned into some special family bonding around a fire. I decided to build a fire in the firepit that I bought for dh several years ago that has never been used, and he and ds were drawn outside. We stayed outside until around 9 p.m. when light rain started. We decided to blow off cooking dinner and had an outside supper of shrimp cocktail, cheese and crackers, challah and a glass (or two) of wine. Even ds joined in, and we called dd to check in with her. Had we planned this, she could have been home for the evening but it was spontaneous.

Those on Facebook should see grainy photo of firepit and lights on a ridge beyond us as the light faded.

Today dMacs has PT and I have to get him into my car. I'm hoping that can be accomplished efficiently with the help of his harness. Tonight we're going to the nice "dress up" cocktail attire party.

Otherwise, I'm taking it easy today.

((Harmony)) I hope today is less stressful.

Yay for longer days, ((Twins))! I find I get to feeling a tad down around late February/early March rather than in the fall. I think that is b/c the fall is very busy and b/c of the accumulation of gray days/lack of sunshine over the winter here.

I did finish strong yesterday! We feted dd18 and I think she felt loved and appreciated, which was the point. Dh helped by picking up the food which we ordered from 2 different Asian restaurants per dd18's request. It was very good! Then, there were thoughtful gifts, yummy dessert, insightful and encouraging speeches. S and R joined us. J was here too but she slept the entire evening.

Traffic, stores, even the gas station were crazy busy yesterday. I waited to pump gas in the middle of the afternoon! I don't know if people are leaving town, prepping for the forecast ice, or both

Shopping left: I am done with dh. I now have 2 items for each of the kids + GG, but I will probably get more. I have 2 for S and R and 2 small gifts for baby J. I will get another gift or two for them as well.

PODA:
- dd15 to and from synchro, 9:45 - 12:15
- groc. store: Sinterklaas meal and celebration (Dutch pancakes is on the menu, of course!) and Cmas dinner. I think we'll do a ham since we just did a turkey.
- dd15 and GG to ice skating bday party at 2:30
- brave the mall?? to finish shopping. I leave the mall to the last possibly moment, which probably doesn't help my dislike of shopping there. . .
- we are babysitting baby J tonight.
- dinner will be leftovers. I think we have enough.

That sounds like such a wonderful lovely evening for your family, Twins. I'm so glad you were able to do that! That certainly is finishing strong.

Dh has gone for a run. *sigh* That just reminds me how far off the exercise wagon I've fallen. . .

Good Morning!

I am feeling MUCH better today. My body is still hanging onto some of its achy feeling, but overall I am much improved.

This morning we woke up to see icicles over a foot long hanging from the roof, trees and any other surface that they can dangle from. Everything is covered with a thick coating of ice. It is weirdly beautiful to see. I'm still very disappointed to not be able to make the trip to celebrate DGD3 birthday, but know we made the right decision.

Stringing popcorn for the tree and birds will be our Christmas activity for today. A simple tradition.

LO woke up several times during the night coughing and congested. I gave him some cough med around 1am and he was able to sleep. I checked on him several times through the night to watch for his fever to rise, but thankfully it didn't.

I'm "playing" in the kitchen with two new recipes this morning and set the smoke alarm off waking everyone up. I want to find a way to include hash browns into healthy eating. I made this low fat crispy hash brown following the recipe exactly. Then I made another batch without the cornstarch, onion & bell peppers to test that variation. They look crispy and wonderful in the oven. They will finish baking in about 5 minutes.

The recipe experiments were a HUGE success! Now hash browns are a acceptable option to both me (wanting healthy eating) and the guys (wanting carbs). The healthy hash browns will be replacing weekend biscuits most of the time.

LO is being succccchhh a 5 year old. I am drawing comfort this is just a normal developmental phase after talking to the grandmother of one of LO classmates. DH and I discussed how we are going to respond to LO new actions/attitude and are in agreement. Now we just have to keep on keeping on until LO gets the message that his actions/attitude is not going to result in anything he wants.

The tree branches are bent downward - some of them touching the ground (lower branches) from the weight of the ice. I've seen several reports of no electricity all around us because the ice has pulled the power lines down.

I'm up determined to have a better day today. I'm trying to cancel church for tomorrow, but the chair doesn't want to. It will only be 4" of snow overnight (on top of the 6 we have already plus what ever falls today) and then ice pellets. She seems to think this is no big deal. Only 2" of snow left the roads almost impassable because it was coming down so hard the plows couldn't keep up but that will be over.

At the moment we are between storms and have until 3 to get groceries. It will be crowded but we have no choice, today or tomorrow we have to make the egg rolls for the 26th and need ingredients. I'm tempted to make the tortieres as well and freeze them. We'll see.

So far today I've s2s, tidied the bedroom, stripped and remade the bed, cleaned our bathroom, started a load of laundry and am making two batches of nuts and bolts (the second batch will be ready in 6 minutes then I take time to eat my breakfast.)

I may have found a place to stay in Wellington. I asked about booking a 5 bedroom house (for $350 a night) but she has 2 rooms already booked and will be staying in the third (party weekend so she wants to be on top of things.) That leaves us two rooms if we don't mind sharing the common areas including, possibly, a bathroom (that part is unclear from the listing.) It is affordable and beautiful, with ocean views, so I might take it but am waiting to hear about an apartment right downtown.

Starting to get icy outside. . . I still haven't gone shopping. I have taken dd15 to synchro, cleaned up the kitchen, had lunch while the rest of the family had dh's waffles.

I forgot to share good news yesterday!! Dd18 got into the big Univ. here - and was invited to apply to the University's honors college. She hasn't yet heard from their school of art, but the LSA college was the most important one for her. She may be done now. . . . Or she may apply to other privates. I suspect she is done, though. This Univ.'s psych. dept., her main interest, is very strong. (The ivy school limited her from applying to other privates for early action.)

Next for me:
- teeth care
- start lol
- make sure someone else can pick up dd15 at 12:15
- go to the mall

Harmony, I can't BELIEVE someone just lost those important x-rays!!! I mean, is there any recourse? Is someone looking for them, or does one office blame another office, etc? If I were Mr. Harmony, I'd be a lot more than unhappy. Sounds like a lot of un-professional-ism was experienced by you two yesterday, what with not receiving forms you were supposed to have received, long wait, no x-rays to provide a baseline knowledge.

Kathryn, I'm fascinated to learn which venue you choose - they sound opposite.

I am fighting a sinus headache I believe.

Got last 2 cards into the mail. HRH finally got letter written to some distant cousins. So they are off. Finished wrapping 3 presents. Ducked out into the world for lunch and ran into 3 of dd15's guy friends from school. They are gentlemanly boys and quick to shake my hand and be pleasantly introduced. But she knows all their faults, so that's what I heard about in the car on the way home - sigh. Brought back take out for HRH, who is still in the middle of his big declutter. Right now dstepson is here helping him.

Nancy, it's not coyotes, at least not pure coyotes, because they only have pups in spring. However, through some of the states between you and me, Oklahoma for instance, there's proof of coyotes mating with dogs, producing coyotes that have confused birth cycles in following generations, among other really bad characteristics, like less fear of humans. So, not saying it couldn't be coyotes, but likely not, since your climate just wouldn't work for winter births for them.
