Sunday PWYC: Run it up the pole and see if it flies edition

Today is the 50th anniversary of Canada's flag.

Despite all the controversy at the time, it has turned out to be a success!

What changes should you 'run up the flag pole' to see if they fly?

He was on Parliament Hill capturing the moment the Red Ensign was lowered for the last time. He objected to the new flag because he and his comrades had served under the original flag and he felt it was disrespectful to change the flag.

The reasoning for the new flag was to have a flag that was solely Canadian. The Red Ensign was three maple leaves on red with the Union Jack in the corner (where the US stars are on their flag.) It was the 'standard' flag design for British Colonies which meant that our flag could easily be confused with the flags of other colonies. Our 100th anniversary as our own country was coming (in 1967) and it was felt that we should begin our next centenary with our own identity.

It is a bitterly cold, windy, day. The wind is from the north so the flag on the Peace Tower is in full view.

I'm still in my pjs. I have to get to church but listening to the wind howl, I don't want to!

It is -17F (-27C) here with a little wind. Dh thinks it is not any colder than yesterday with the high winds. It is also sunny! I think some of us might go for a run or two. We've already paid for our tickets for the day. We've seen a few skiers out.

Ds and dd19 both brought school work and have been faithfully working when they can. Ds was even working in the car on the way up here. They are not on holiday. Dd16 does have a break next week.

We're up and about here; I was able to sleep in to a little past 8:30. I've read the paper and straightened up the kitchen a little. We're going to see the Imitation Game this afternoon - will be much less crowded and more enjoyable for us. We'll have the leftover mushroom and barley soup for our supper.

Twenty degrees now with a wind chill of 5 degrees. I'll need to walk the dogs for at least a short walk.

Hoping for some stamping or genealogy time today.

Back from church & a stop for groceries. Had to make a long detour as our usual trip was blocked by police with an accident.

Most churches (if not all) were cancelled up home. Between temps and the continued snowfall it was dangerous for anyone to be out unless they really needed to be. DS-R had called yesterday and was going to try to sleep for a while. He'd worked 8 nights in a row.. Didn't expect to go out until tonight but was called into work at 3am. Sure DS-A and all his crew were out working all night. He called last night and asked that we have one of the trustees from church call him. There was just no place left to push snow with the plow. He wanted to get permission to use his loader(s) to move some snow out of the way. Imagine he had to use it for other lots such as fire departments. It's a pretty constant job lately. They had so much work last week that his payroll sent in on this Monday was $16,000. That Is definitely his highest payroll EVER. That's just an indication of how much snow they've been getting in that part of the country at least. Praying for all those in harm's way -either by snow or cold!

DD has to go to her dmil's this afternoon to celebrate her (mil's) birthday. Dsonil texted that he'd gotten called into work for a problem. Luckily it's the same town as his Mom's.

Hmmm....there's only 4 of us here today? Most unusual. I've been snoozing a lot this afternoon, I'm afraid. One, I dreaded trying to get out of our recliner and two, I've dreaded going into the kitchen. It's a royal mess and I've been reluctant to be the only one to clean it up. Of course dh and I are the only ones home right now. The counters and sink were a mess when we left for church, then we brought home groceries. AND we were gone all day yesterday -so how did that explosion happen??, says I. It's not going to get better on its own, so guess I'd best get at it before dd and dsonil get back. It'll even be harder then to clean. Think I'm a bit 'grumpy'.

Store run done. Food is put away. Sunny and nice weather out here now 51*. So I am headed out to enjoy it. Maybe a walk or pull more weeds.

Chickens are all great loving this weather and the treats I saved for them from my taco salad I did not eat all of the shell.

Dying for some time for myself today. Dh and I have been to movie and stopped off at a "salvage" type of place and finally got home. I'm on the phone now with dd

Hello, Villagers!

It's sunny and near 60* here. It's so beautiful out. I'm doing laundry, cleaning/tidying, and am working on a short story, by hand. I have 2 to outline, too. But one's for Valentine's Day 2016, to sub in August, 6 months early. I want to outline it soon, while it's fresh in my mind.

Kathryn, We have a "Peace Arch," up on the Northern WA/Canada border. When our kids were in scouts, we'd go up there for the Peace Arch ceremony, to trade patches and small gifts, with scouts from other areas or Canada. It was a lot of fun for us!
