Teak (Tectona grandis) is a tropical hardwood tree species in the family Lamiaceae. It is a large, deciduous tree that occurs in mixed hardwood forests. Tectona grandis has small, fragrant white flowers arranged in dense clusters (panicles) at the end of the branches. These flowers contain both types of reproductive organs (perfect flowers). The large, papery leaves of teak trees are often hairy on the lower surface. Teak wood has a leather-like smell when it is freshly milled and is particularly valued for its durability and water resistance. The wood is used for boat building, exterior construction, veneer, furniture, carving, turnings, and various small projects.

Tectona grandis is native to south and southeast Asia, mainly Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, but is naturalised and cultivated in many countries in Africa and the Caribbean. Myanmar's teak forests account for nearly half of the world's naturally occurring teak. Molecular studies show that there are two centres of the genetic origin of teak: one in India and the other in Myanmar and Laos.

Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry (Myanmar) found the world's two biggest living teak trees on 28 August 2017 in Homalin Township, Sagaing Region, Myanmar. The biggest one, named Homemalynn 1, is 8.4 m (28 ft) in diameter and 34 m (112 ft) tall. The second biggest one, named Homemalynn 2, is 8.2 m (27 ft) in diameter.

Teak is the national tree of Indonesia.

Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for starting us off, and for an interesting article about teak.

Helian, I'm glad the details for your DMum's move are starting to come together - IMHO you e crossed to biggest hurdle, how she's going to get to the new NH. And such reassut that a nurse will be traveling with her.

It's any grey , cloudy start. I'm hoping it stays dry, so I can get those windows finished. Other plans for today, a nice walk, some time in my garden and clean the downstairs of the house. DH has choral this evening, so that's a good chance to deal with some paperwork.

We have another beautiful sunny day. I've taken Fred out, and I've also given Jude and Matilda their Laxapet. Jude is a little angel, and just licks it off my finger or her paw, but Matilda kicks and struggles every step of the way. And, of course, DH picked the exact moment to complain his allergies are getting bad, and where were the antihistamines? (On the table where I told you I'd put a new box specially for you last night. And no, I can't come this exact minute and show you, next I am somewhat occupied!) Calm has now been restored, and as soon as I've finished my breakfast, I'm going to make the most of the sunshine and go for my walk.

Good morning ☀️

Helia, may I ask why your mother has to be moved? I’m trying to catch up, we just dealt with my mom and dh’s mom the past couple of years so my heart goes out to you.

Trissie, thank you for the educational start. I’ve seen real furniture but not sure I’ve seen a tree in bloom, must look that up now.

LAnn, how old is Little Bit now?

Hi, kittykatt!

I’m an empty nester now, for a couple of years, the girls went to school, one has graduated and moved to Mississippi, the other is at UA and working so intends to stay there even during summers, all parents passed, dh still working, so I’m floundering a bit. It was extremely hectic for awhile with my mom on hospice at home (next door to me so I cared for her), then dh’s mom had dementia and had to be placed in a home that wasn’t the best, then his sister got kicked out of her home so we had to scramble to find her a place to move to and help out in many ways. I took last year off and grieved, this year I’m trying to find my place. Routines? What are those? I feel like everything can be put off so nothing is getting done. I’ve had a head cold (or could be allergies with this weather and pollen) so slept a lot. Got the notice about the she boards so I’ve been going through all of my posts and saving important data. So far I’ve found birthdates of pets I didn’t have, dh’s medical history, memories of the girls, and just having fun cleaning house with shes. Now it’s time to shake a tail feather and get my act together.
Perhaps the boards shutting down could be a good thing if it gets me here, better organized and enjoying life. Time to stop rambling and get busy.
Thanks for being here, women from the old boards as well as this new to me board! ♥️

Good morning!

trissie ~ I love teak! I have a Scandinavian inspired teak coffee table with beautiful inlaid tiles that I've had for over 35 years.
L.Ann ~ busy day for you, too!
Bama ~ First of all - great to see you! ((hugs)) I do know about grief. It's been a tough couple of years, but that's a story for another time. I'll answer for helia, since I'm here. helia grew up in the Illinois town where I currently live and her mom is in a nursing home nearby. helia lives up in Michigan and has been making monthly visits for awhile now. It's a 5 - 6 hour drive. She's moving her mom - easier for helia to watch out over her and easier for her family to visit. I think helia said there wasn't much visiting going on now except for her. helia ~ you can correct anything I don't have right.
kitty ~ You have to have a driver's license in the states to not only drive but it provides official ID to be able to get into some secured places and you need one to fly. I think - don't hold me to this - If you don't fly - or need access into some government buildings, you don't need one. From what I see the REAL ID is a driver's license which requires that you provide the same information as a passport. What I don't know - and haven't really dove into it - is if they send that information to Homeland Security for a background check. After the deadline, you can you use a passport instead of REAL ID for domestic flights. This law was passed by congress after 9/11. That's the short story. More details below.
REAL ID
And there's this.
DHS.GOV - about REAL ID
