The Mississippi River is the primary river of the largest drainage basin in the United States. It is the second-longest river in the United States, behind only the Missouri. From its traditional source of Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota, it flows generally south for 2,340 miles (3,766 km) to the Mississippi River Delta in the Gulf of Mexico. With its many tributaries, the Mississippi's watershed drains all or parts of 32 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces between the Rocky and Appalachian mountains. The river either borders or passes through the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The main stem is entirely within the United States; the total drainage basin is 1,151,000 sq mi (2,980,000 km2), of which only about one percent is in Canada. The Mississippi ranks as the world's tenth-largest river by discharge flow, and the largest in North America.

Native Americans have lived along the Mississippi River and its tributaries for thousands of years. Many were hunter-gatherers, but some, such as the Mound Builders, formed prolific agricultural and urban civilizations, and some practiced aquaculture. The arrival of Europeans in the 16th century changed the native way of life as first explorers, then settlers, ventured into the basin in increasing numbers. The river served sometimes as a barrier, forming borders for New Spain, New France, and the early United States, and throughout as a vital transportation artery and communications link. In the 19th century, during the height of the ideology of manifest destiny, the Mississippi and several tributaries, most notably its largest, the Ohio and Missouri, formed pathways for the western expansion of the United States. The river also became the subject of American literature, particularly in the writings of Mark Twain.

Formed from thick layers of the river's silt deposits, the Mississippi embayment, and American Bottom are some of the most fertile regions of the United States; steamboats were widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries to ship agricultural and industrial goods. During the American Civil War, the Mississippi's final capture by Union forces marked a turning point to victory for the Union. Because of the substantial growth of cities and the larger ships and barges that replaced steamboats, the first decades of the 20th century saw the construction of massive engineering works such as levees, locks and dams, often built in combination. A major focus of this work has been to prevent the lower Mississippi from shifting into the channel of the Atchafalaya River and bypassing New Orleans.

Since the 20th century, the Mississippi River has also experienced major pollution and environmental problems, most notably elevated nutrient and chemical levels from agricultural runoff, the primary contributor to the Gulf of Mexico dead zone.

Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for starting us off, and for the joke.

Dogged, thank you for the song -that's going to be on my mind all day. My aim is to put Matilda to bed at 8pm on Tuesday evening, with her night's ration of food, then take it away at 10pm (the cut off,) give her the usual two pieces of biscuit for a good night treat, and get into bed myself. I am hoping she will make the most of her early meal, so hopefully the hair pulling won't start before 4 am. Of course, if she chooses not to eat much supper, we could be in for a very " interesting" night! I remember years ago, delivering DDeparted Trifle for dental surgery, announcing we'd been up since 3 am and then going back to bed, leaving the ringer on my phone on loud, in case they needed to contact me. With DH home, that's not going to be possible so I'm hoping Matilda will be more accommodating!

DH is off work this week, so we had a more leisurely start this morning. Outside, it's cloudy by dry so far. DH is going to see a DF this afternoon to hopefully fix her computer. I need to do some housework (the house is in its usual Monday morning mess!) and would like to do some gardening, either early on, if I get up in time, or later, when it's cooler.

I crossed the Mississippi three times in one day.
We were coming home from TX, after my ddad had passed away at M. D. Anderson. (He had leukemia.) This was 12 years ago.
We were in one car with DS, ddil, and DGS, who was eleven months old. My uncle and two aunts were following us in a second car. DH and I had just swapped drivers... and I was driving across the bridge at Baton Rouge, LA. Rush hour in the afternoon. I thought I was about to miss my exit, and ended up taking the wrong exit. Had to get back on the interstate, cross the bridge going west, and then get back in the traffic again going east. Sigh. Duncle was extremely stressed out with me, as was dh. We took time to stop at a fast food restaurant before we started back in that traffic again. We had left on Monday afternoon after school, thinking we might be there a week. Ddad passed away just before dawn on Tuesday, before we got there, and we spent Tuesday night there and started back home Wednesday. It was an extremely quick trip. (My dmom and dbro flew back home, but we may have made a quicker trip than they did, LOL)

That was certainly an eventful trip, LucyLee! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Hi Lucy Lee, it’s nice to see you here. I always fear getting off at the wrong exit when driving new places. Thank goodness for gps to help me out now. I also fear high bridges and dread going anywhere I’m uncertain of that might have a bridge towering over the landscape.

I got up to let the dogs out, found dh still in bed and had a short panicked moment. He’s supposed to be at work. Turns out his alarm didn’t go off so he called in to let them know he’s going to be late. He has been launched successfully now and I’m doing my morning routine.
