August 2025 - Sort, Tidy, Declutter!

There's a theory that if you name your challenges, you can defeat them. It comes from ancient wars before communication was very good, when you'd be fighting an invader without knowledge of what to call them. Are these guys "Huns"? Maybe they prefer "Barbarians"? Obviously, it's a lot harder to go onto the battlefield against the "Oncoming Hoards of Someplace" than it is after you happen to notice that one of them is that guy named Bob you met last year. You could call out, "Look, forthwith! It be Bob of Springfield!" And Bob would be sorta embarrassed that he hadn't introduced himself to everybody, and your whole team would feel a lot better.
Do you need to go around your home and NAME some spaces you need to address? Which spaces of clutter are you allowing because you've become so used to looking away and not addressing them? Consider naming it and claiming it, writing it down and actually getting to it.
If we write down our STRATEGY against
"storage box still on the couch",
"messy desk surface, layers one, two and three",
the "why am I saving the stuff in that bag, again?", or
"Stash and Dash I know is under the bed somewhere",
etc, etc,
then we've got the best chance of moving on to counting our blessings afterward instead. (not a bad tune to get stuck in our heads) And the blessings will be clear, calm areas that give us mental health and a smile.

Part of that start was something I'd written during Covid, and it made me smile when I came across it recently. Hopefully I can stay cheerful singing "Count Your Blessings" or "Counting My Blessings" as I declutter!
I will NAME the spaces that are up next for me :
shelves along the mud room wall
top of brown bookcase
I'm hoping that some tossing and consolidating in the mud room will free up space that can be better used for some things taking space in kitchen. So, some areas in the kitchen may turn out to be a "next up" too, depending on how successful.
Some spaces I hope to get to during next week:
under the double window
navy colored bin

I have moved a book pile.
Limbs got containerized after cutting em up.
I have several weeks worth to go is the plan.
It was good exercise and to be outside.
-----
Took out the trash & cartons I emptied today when putting things away.
I have a plan;
I got some powder blue crates to put things in that I sort when I do the zone work.

So far, I've reorganized about 10 feet of length along the mud room wall shelves and gotten rid of 16 items. I do have to say, though, this area lives up to its name as a utility space and most items do have real utility for us. I'd say only about 3 square feet has been freed up.
Still, it's positive!

WTG, Harriet!
DH is off work this coming week. He goes to visit his DBro at the end of the week, but there are a few days he has free, so it would be a good opportunity for him to sort out his tools in the garage. He can do this even if it rains, and means I can then start decluttering /sorting through the rest of the garage.

Good idea kitty, hope it happens, but enjoy his being at dbil's.
I need to do massive weeding still in the garden. I am not expecting the veg to be great - I dug up some potatoes dd put in and they are the size of marbles. We have had lots of strawberrberries quite early and the blackberries too, I think I picked the last today.
We have discovered Book Cycle and we seem to have taken many more then we have given. It has not helped with the clutter in the living room. Just now there is a large heavy book or Organic Gardening by King Charles on my side table, dh picked it up and he claims to have no interest in gardening and moans about books around the room.
Goodnight God Bless.

Vergers, according to my Dnextdoorneighbour C, who has a large and productive allotment, it's been a bumper year for fruit especially strawberries and plums, but a very poor year for root vegetables, she thinks because it's been so dry. So it's probably the weak to blame for your small potatoes!
DH has sorted out his tools, had a general tidy and been to the tip. I haven't been down to the garage since Monday to have a look, but, if he's done his stuff and also thrown away obvious rubbish, then at least I can get in there now and hopefully chip away at the rest, a little at a time.

Well I think C is correct. Dd sowed a strawberry bed and it came into fruit early, but prolific, this was useful because when she was ill the only thing she would eat were these strawberries. We also had a lot of redcurrants loganberries and blackberries, the blackberries are the last but I found none today. We had a lot of gooseberries except the bush in the front which doesn't get much sun. The blueberries and raspberries are coming out now slowly a couple at a time, but were only put in last year. The rhubarb is rubbish, I had some in the back and I think it was you that said to get rid of it when the leaves turned red and the stalks were tasteless, dd bought a completely different plant and put it in the front and it has done the same.
I finishexd making some blackberry cold cure this morning, we only have a half of a bottle left and dh likes to drink it when feverish. It is A day off so he took dgs to his computer club at the school, it is a club for special needs so he has to be taken and picked up. We went out to a Spoons and had the curry club, delicious with mango chutney and Mango Monster drink.
Goodnight God Bless.

I took dgs's old blazer and a shirt to the school and handed them in for the second hand rail/spare uniform if needed by staff, and removed the buttons from the intractable stained shirt. I hope A will buy new school shoes and socks for him next week. I thought I had finished with thoughts about school uniform but no, the teachers at the school are very nice and I am so glad.

Vergers, I'm not sure if you have to book anappointment yet for school shoe measuring and fitting at places like Clarks? My DF CW managed to get shoes for her DD G nearly 13 yo this week just by walking in and asking for the shoes G liked (fortunately they were both "sensible" and "suitable"!) , but down here in Devon when it gets near to "back to school" you do often have to book in advance as the shoe shops get *very* busy. I think there's still 2 or 3 weeks left of the summer holiday though? I'm glad the staff at DGS's school are being kind and supportive.
I've just remembered that G"s current school and her primary school (I'm not sure how old DGS is) both have counsellors that students/pupils can access if they need help. (G's Dad has a progressive, terminal condition and is now in a home as he can no longer be cared for at home. The disease was affecting his brain and was making him psychotic with thoughts of violence. Changing his meds has helped a lot, but he's still too poorly to come home, and unfortunately has continued to decline.) I'm guessing DGS's school also has a counsellor that he could see if needed. It doesn't just have to be about the loss of his Mum, it can be about anything that's troubling him.
HTH!
