Spinsters' Rock is a Neolithic dolmen near Drewsteignton in Devon, situated on Shilstone Farm west of the village near the A382 road. The dolmen consists of three granite supports known as orthostats, rising to between 1.7 and 2.3 metres (5 ft 7 in and 8 ft 7 in) surmounted by a capstone measuring 4.5 by 3.1 metres. (15 by 10 ft) No trace of any mound survives. The name derives from folklore that it was erected by three spinsters before breakfast!!!

The dolmen collapsed in 1862 but was restored in the same year.No finds were recorded.

There are 18th-century antiquarian reports of nearby stone circles and alignments.These reports are considered to be of "dubious accuracy".There are some free-standing stones nearby, although only two align with Spinsters' Rock.

I'm an "import" to Devon - born in a town the county of Hampshire , which then became part of Dorset during the local government reorganisation in 1974, and then I moved to Devon for university and stayed! After nearly 40 years here I'm just about being accepted by the locals as one of them and not a "foreigner"! One of my aunts was also a war time bride, only she married a Canadian.

I remember when we had our first dishwasher fitted (the previous owners hadn't had one) so we "lost" a cupboard too. As we already had the washing machine the other side of the sink (we do t ha e a utility room) I believe the plumber took out the plastic"T " piece of piping accommodating the washing machine, and substituted it with a "Y" piece, so both machines could be plumbed in. Then it was "just" a case of making a hole in the side of the old cupboard (that had been left as it separated the dishwasher from under the sink and also helped hold up the sink unit!) to run the hoses through.

I piled everything from the cupboard into a couple of crates and just sat it in the worktop. We then went through those crates, discarding everything that hadn't been used and we thought was unlikely to be used again. That got us down to one crate (piled high!) . Bit I kept the second crate and every time we used something out it back there. And I also went through the other cupboards bit by bit, sorting and decluttering. After a few weeks I had space for everything we actually did use! And the kitchen remained useable and reasonably mess free throughout. I remember I was still working outside the home almost FT then, which was why I did the rehoming project bit by bit. So although it took longer, it wasn't overwhelming.

Today Matilda woke me early to say she was cold and hungry! Yesterday evening, despite the warm day, the temperature had dropped, I was cold even with a jumper on, Fred was curled up tightly in a tiny ball looking reproachful, and I've noticed the laundry is taking a lot longer to dry now (we air dry everything as we don't have a tumble dryer. Yet. ). This morning my phone says it's just 9C / 48F outside, although it should warm up as the day progresses

So, today I'm going to bite the bullet and set the heating to come on low - just for an hour or so in the morning and again in the evening to begin with. I can always turn it off again if we get another "heatwave"! DH wanders around in a t-shirt all year saying he is "fine", so I shan't be consulting him on this!

I need to copy and paste the list I wrote of "extra" tasks for today, so I can at least pick *something*. Once the cats get off the bed, of course!

Longer term - trim back ground cover in front garden as it dies back

The temperatures are really dropping, kittykatt, it's not only the cats who notice it!

Last weekend before the storm comes. I've made it through work week, and I took kids shopping for gym shoes and school slippers (we're a slipper culture. We don't wear outdoor shoes inside, and the same goes for kindergartens and school - it's not till university when you're allowed to come inside without changing into slippers! That kinda left me exhausted
House is not too bad (took care of that yesterday, and it was bad, really bad, and now it's better, but gentle - or not so gentle - touch would be handy), but garden needs attention, and more important, the fruits of the garden - it's apples and plums harvest! So my electric canner and the dehydrator will run big time. Tomorrow, we'll be gone most of the day - we have tickets to see Lucy and Selam in the National Museum. I bought tickets for the very first weekend the exhibition is open, and I am hoping it will be slightly less crowded than, let's say, the final weekend of the expo, but it's gonna be big, still. The girls are kinda meh about it, but DS is very excited. I kinda have second thoughts about how ethical it is to put human remains on display, but I've known about Lucy since I was about 10, back when she was just a footnote in obsure books about paleontology (yes, I was a weird kid), and so I guess being her No. 1 fan in the Czech Republic (she and I, we share our name-influencing song) entitles me to go and pay her my respect!

Good morning, Trissie! A big WTG being successful with the DKids new footwear. From talking with friends with kids I now just what a big achievement this is, and that if you're all still speaking to each other at the end of the trip, then it's a miracle!

I'm sure you and DS will enjoy Lucy. Such an important discovery. Personally, I'm ok with human remains being displayed if it's for scientific or educational purposes (and, after all, the skeleton is just the "shell" of the person, not the actual person themselves), and its very important we learn about humanity 's heritage and ancestors, and seeing the "real thing" makes it a lot more real somehow. But I *do* have reservations if remains are on display as some kind of "freak show".

I've finally posted on J& C about my DF PM. I've left a lot out (some of the details are extremely sordid), but if anyone needs to know more, perhaps if they have a friend going through something similar, then please PM me and I'd be happy to share.

Having coffee with DH now, then he's going to run some errands and I need to tackle the sitting room.

kittykatt, I've also heard that part of the deal of Lucy travelling abroad was a major contribution towards the reconstruction of Ethiopian National Museum, so I could say that by going (and purchasing tickets), I am contributing towards a good cause!

The house is filled with the sweet smell of cooking apples and cinnamon - the first basket (fallen apples picked up earlier this week) went towards making apple sauce and stewed apples with cinnamon, cloves and lemon slices. Apple sauce will be canned and stewed apples, that's gonna be dessert after lunch.
