October is upon us. Hard to believe.

What memories of October from your youth, your children's youth, your grandchildren's favorite parts of the season that you celebrate. What memories give you warmth and joy?

For me there are many - apple picking, leaf gathering, acorn picking, making caramel apples, apple tarts, apple cider, hay rides, watching dd's enjoying the season. (one of dd's friends had a trailer that they put straw bales on and drive the kids house to house bc the houses were far apart.
in school they gave out caramel apples for halloween. We couldn't go in halloween costumes bc it was a catholic school but that was a big thrill for all of us.

My grandmother (my mom's mom) was a great story teller of her families experiences and history and I could sit and listen to her all day.


I pray this October gives you beautiful memories. praying for a simple and wonderful day.

Simple Sunday here.

Yesterday my son and granddaughter came over for a swim and a visit.

I was out walking Coco at 6:15 this morning. Still dark out so I needed my flashlight

Fixed Breakfast for me and Sweetie and then I drank my coffee and watched a bit of the news.

Just came back from another short walk. It’s partly cloudy with a bit of wind. May sit out in the lanai and read for a while. There’s a tropical wave out in the Atlantic that I’m keeping an eye on. Won’t be till the end of next week before I know whether it is something to be concerned about.

Up at 6:00 after sleeping well.
Got the bujo planning writing time in.
Made biscuits for bfast will freeze half of them up.
Lovely day here today. Sunny & mild.
Walk happened in two segments.
Read some in a Bible study type book.

bw2, thank you for getting us started today on such a positive note. I'm enjoying a simple Sunday, and I'm afraid I feel melancholy about October. This year somehow the High Holy Days have been harder - remembering my sister who died between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in 2016. My energy has been off - perhaps it's the effort to put on the RH dinner, perhaps it's the days getting shorter. Perhaps it's just a disturbance in the force.

Dh has been out for a massage and is bowling again today in the city tournament. He'll be home around four p.m. probably. We're having burgers for our supper tonight - I should add a veggie too.

I really haven't done much this month to keep HOA books updated so I need to start that today. It's not a huge job but my resistance is strong. Perhaps if I reconcile today I can get together the "paid bills" tomorrow and file. (Some come by email so I need to print, etc. and I'm not good at keeping them together, lol) And I've decided that the cemetery accounting which is a simple Excel spreadsheet with a few transactions, mostly on autopay, can be done every three months, not monthly. So it's the end of the quarter and I need to do that. (Reminds me of Harmony who was so faithful with her bookkeeping and payroll for the business.)

In my home the beginning of October is awesome and the end of October brings grief and anger. Birthdays and Thanksgiving in the first half, anniversaries of both of my parents deaths on the 26th. My mom in 1967 and my dad in 2013.

So far today I have cut the grass. Talked to neighbours who got home from 2 weeks in France yesterday.(He was also cutting the grass.) It's gorgeous and sunny and there wasn't a single cloud in the sky earlier. Too bad it's too windy. Dh moved a bunch of burnable dried out stuff from the garden to the fire pit. He also put away the garden hose.

Dishwasher is going. Stovetop has been cleaned and the sink is full of soapy water covering last night's pots and pans.

I have a dryer full of clean clothes to put away.

(Twins'), energy is so precious and yet impish. Sometimes we need to think, too, just have some contemplation and recharge.

Thinking of Sunny!

Having a thinking cap day and quiet day here. Morning pastor's message needs to be revisited when it is posted. Brain power used for creativity, sewing. Contemplating textiles - at one point dropped a pile by mistake and Tobias was appalled.

Simple October memories work well with that... ..:

Baling hay, not having enough body weight to keep the tractor still and having to call to older boy-cousins for help. They were irritated with me, but I was holding on to the steering wheel for leverage, to push down on the brake and trying as hard as I could, lol. Not old enough to toss bales, I was the "driver" at very young ages. Creeping along at a snail's pace was the job, but the tractors always wanted to take off. As I recall... .. the boys got paid... .. hmmmmm.

My mother would press and trace leaves to teach art, search for leaves made into "lace" by insects and display them against white background, gather moss before frost for terrariums for her school children during the winter.

Every single late-season-crop corn ear having a worm at the top. Every. Single. One. I thought fall corn always came with life at the end. When we get corn from the store now and it is so perfect to the very tip, I ask it, "What did they DO to you, dear? Where is your little friend?" It whispers, "permethrin", lol. I wonder if the worm was preferable to the spray.

LadyM, how did the curlers work out? I had seen them just recently, glancing at a photo of Patricia Routledge dressed as the character Hyacinth. She would wear those curlers overnight with a pink mesh and ribbon hair net with a bow on top. Every day her hair would be perfect, at least that's what we viewers were given to believe.

Cathy, I'm glad the first of the month is pleasant for you.

LadyM, how did the curlers work out?

I’m happy with the experiment. I expected curls, but I was surprised by the amount of volume the foam curlers added—it feels like I have twice as much hair. It’s been 24 hours since I removed the curlers, and the curls have softened but held up beautifully without any product like hairspray.

Spending time looking at the upcoming week and thinking through how to make it all happen. I can't stay in the weekly view too long or I get overwhelmed. I need to know what is coming but my focus is on getting through the next 24 hours or so. IYKWIM Sometimes 24 hours is too much to think about, so I bring my focus down to the next hour.....or even the next 15 minutes.
