Marmalade is a sweet, tangy fruit preserve made from the juice and peel of citrus fruits boiled with sugar and water. The well-known version is made from bitter orange, but other citrus fruits such as lemons and limes can also be used. The bitter orange is mostly used in marmalade because of its high pectin content, which gives a thick consistency to its marmalade. In addition, the balance of acid and pectin is needed for consistency. Fruits with low pectin have it added to make the marmalade.

Historically, the term marmalade was often used for non-citrus preserves. Mango, pineapple, apricot, and cocoa beans, have been made into marmalade in those cases. In the 21st century, the term refers mainly to jam made with citrus fruits. White sugar (sucrose) is typically used to sweeten marmalade,

Originally marmalade was made from quince, and meant quince cheese. Mary Kettilby's 1714 cookery book, A Collection of Above Three Hundred Receipts (pages 78–79) discusses how to make marmalade. Modern marmalade has existed since the 1700s when the Scottish added water to marmalade to make it less solid than before. The Scottish were the people who made marmalade a breakfast item, and soon after the rest of Britain followed.

The word marmalade in the English language comes from French which came from the Portuguese word marmelada, starting with the Greek word melimēlon that means 'sweet apple'.

The preserve has been mentioned in various books and marmalade sandwiches are the fictional character Paddington Bear's favourite food. The 2014 movie Paddington made slight increase in marmalade sales in the United Kingdom.

Dogged, thank you for your support. This lady has a reputation for being "difficult", so I.
Giving her until 10 am today to reply, and if she doesn't, then I'll send the list over without her, explaining that there may be an extra one, and that I'll let them know. It's.nit fair to keep the pub waiting -its a family owned business with a smallish kitchen , and as we're quite a big party they need to know our menu choices well in advance.

So, apart from finalising the menu choices for lunch, I'm hoping for a productive day today. A walk round the estate if it stops raining, some garden time if it's dry enough, and some housework. DH is going to the office, so if I don't get sidetracked there's potential to get a lot done today!

Kittykatt thanks for the start, and now a mental image of the Paddington Bear making a mess with oranges to make marmalade. I hope the difficult lady won't be an obstruction to a nice parish meal.

Good morning, FFB! That's nice you could walk the boys to daycare in the light today. I think maybe the real catalyst for the increase in marmalade consumption was the "skit" Paddington did with our late Queen, as a surprise for her Platinum Jubilee.

I'm used to this particular lady, she has a reputation for being "difficult", but she's not had an easy life, so I do try to be understanding. Ive heard from her this morning, and she doesn't want either of the alternatives I suggested for her, that I know she would be able to eat, so she's going to visit the pub herself this afternoon and get an exact list of ingredients for the soup. (She does not have any allergies or food intolerances, she's just very fussy). I'm going to admit my heart sank when she said she wanted to come, but I'm going to have to try and make her feel welcome .

I e done lots of "bits" of things this morning, but done actually seem to have finished anything. I'm going to take Fred out next (it's windy today, but dry! ) and then go fory walk.

And I have success for our parish lunch. D has finally been persuaded that an organic vegan soup and some fresh organic bread cannot possibly have anything "nasty" in it. (Fortunately, she does not have to eat gluten free!) I've quickly finalised my list and emailed it to the proprietor, so I can finally tick that off my list.

Kittykatt, so the lady is finally ok ! Good for her. I hope the weather agrees with your afternoon plans.

Helia, poor baby I. It must be difficult for F of course. Hoping for everything to be fine soon, so that the new family can soon be home.

DS7 is sick, probably nothing serious. MrNG left his internship at noon, is now home. I will probably stay home tomorrow... depending on what doc says, doc appt at 6.30pm.
