Strawberry jam has roots in ancient Rome and its history mirrors the evolution of fruit preservation, sugar availability, and industrialization. Initially, Romans preserved fruit with honey, and the practice gained momentum in Europe as sugar became more accessible during the Crusades, but it was still.consldered to be a luxury item. .

Its popularity soared during the 18th and 19th centuries with increased strawberry cultivation, leading to mass production in the 20th century that made strawberry jam a global pantry staple.

Today, strawberry jam is a staple of the British breakfast table, where it's spread on toast. . It is also often served with scones and clotted cream, as part of the traditional "cream tea" .

Bama, with many fruit trees, their "personal life" is ... complicated. If we take apples, the vast majority are not self-fertile, so they need. Pollination partner. There aren't male or female apple trees as such, but rather both trees need each other's pollen in order pollinate their flowers and produce apples. And you can't just pick any old tree either. You need two varieties that flower at roughly the same time for them to be compatible..( There are charts you can consult when choosing varieties). If you live in an area with lots of fruit trees then it's likely someone will have a tree that's compatible with yours, so it's not such an issue. You just hope the bees will do their job. To make it even more complicated, there are also some varieties such as Bramley, which are triploid, and require two compatible pollination partners, ... but we won't go there!

Dogged, I hope you managed to get all your laundry dried satisfactorily.

Today, DH is going to Bristol on the train to celebrate a friend's birthday. (I have no idea why Bristol!) The forecast is also "dry with sunny spells", which, if accurate, will be ideal for both of us.

My back garden needs attention, but it's just been too wet to do anything out there. I would like to do some very necessary deadheading, and prune at least one more rose. My wet weather alternative is to do some more decluttering and deep cleaning,. especially since we're now in November! I also need to make flapjack for the Y, and try on my outfit for DDepartedF GH's funeral, which is this coming Thursday. We have been requested to wear some bright colours, as it's planned to be a celebration of her life. I do have a smart navy coat, which I can brighten up with a scarf, and a blue dress to wear underneath, but I need to try everything on without interruptions, to check everything "goes" together. I also need to reply to *that * email, and it would be good to organise the Christmas purchases a bit better . I think that's more than enough for one day!

Updated for today. DH has already left, and we have ! DH wont be home until 10 pm, so I might make meringues for dessert tomorrow. (They need to sit in the turned off oven overnight to thoroughly dry out, so I can't do them if we need the oven for Saturday supper).

Looking out of the window, everything still looks very wet underfoot , but we have sun and lime sky for the first time in days, so it's looking encouraging. So, I'll do my regular housework first, and by then everything will have hopefully dried out enough for me to get outside in my garden. If not, then I'll go for my walk round the estate, so either way it's a win win.

Now strawberry jam is something I am definitely up to, kittykatt!
Bama, most modern cultivated varieties of figs do not require fig wasps, so you're probably safe! The wild ones in the Mediterranean do, though. But I don't think fig wasps are actually endemic to Central Europe so whatever grows here, is self pollinating.

Enjoying a slow morning and a bit of doom scrolling on facebook. Not good for me, but what can you say about guilty pleasure? No plans for today, other than get ready for the party and for the week ahead - it's gonna be a difficult one with errands every single day!

Good morning, Trissie! (It's still *just* morning here! ) I think we all have our guilty pleasures online - mine is looking at cat photos Whose birthday are you celebrating with a party today?

I've been looking through the black Friday offers that have been flooding my inbox. ( Yes, I know there's technically nearly a month to go still, but it seems that " Black Friday" now lasts the whole of November? ), as I really need tock up on my toiletries, which prompted me to clear out the part of the bottom of my wardrobe where I keep spares, and I found a couple of items I'd forgotten I had bought. So when I do make my final purchase, it will only be for items I really need. I've also put the new freezer I've picked out into 3 trolleys with three different companies and I'm waiting to see if that goes down in price anywhere later this month. ( Our existing freezer is definitely on its way out, but I'm checking the temperature I side daily, and it's still within safe limits, so there's no immediate hurry, although it will need to be replaced sooner rather than later. I have informed DH that this time we are having a frost free model - the luxury of not having to spend the best part of a morning defrosting and having to deal with ice and water over the kitchen floor! I also think it would help me rotate stuff better, so we used the older items first, as cleaning it would no longer be so onerous, so would hopefully be done more often. )

I e also renewed the subscription for the garden bin. What a performance! First of all, the link the council gave me didn't work, then when I went on the website it took ages to find the right page. Then it wanted me to sign up for something before it would actually lete renew the subscription. On the bright side, at least they have now finally moved into the 21st century and now accept PayPal!

Outside it's clouded a bit, but is still dry for now. Fred has had his walk and some lap time, and we've both shared some Greek yogurt. Time to get that hoover out now!
