The Siamese cat is one of the first distinctly recognised breeds of Asian cat. It is one of several varieties of cats native to Thailand (known as Siam before 1939).described and illustrated in manuscripts called "Tamra Maew" (Cat Poems). The "Tamra Maew" is estimated to have been written from the 14th to the 18th century.

The original Siamese became one of the most popular breeds in Europe and North America in the 19th century. Siamese cats have light blue eyes and a distinctive colourpoint coat, resulting from a temperature-sensitive type of albinism. Siamese cats tend to darken with age, and generally, adult Siamese living in warm climates have lighter coats than those in cool climates.

In 1878, U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes received the first documented Siamese to reach the United States. The cat, named "Siam," was sent from Bangkok to the American Consul] In 1884, the British Consul-General in Bangkok, Edward Blencowe Gould (1847–1916), brought a breeding pair of the cats, Pho and Mia, back to Britain as a gift for his sister, Lilian Jane Gould (who, married in 1895 as Lilian Jane Veley,went on to co-found the Siamese Cat Club in 1901.

In the 1950s–1960s, as the Siamese was increasing in popularity, many breeders and cat show judges began to favour the more slender look. Breeders created increasingly long, fine-boned, narrow-headed cats through generations of selective breeding. Eventually, the modern show Siamese was bred to be extremely elongated, with a lean, tubular body, long, slender legs, a very long, very thin tail that tapers gradually into a point, and a long, wedge-shaped head topped by extremely large, wide-set ears.

By the mid-1980s, cats of the original style had largely disappeared from cat shows. Still, a few breeders, particularly in the UK, continued to breed and register them, resulting in today's two types of Siamese: the modern, "show-style", standardised Siamese, and the "Traditional Siamese", both descended from the same distant ancestors, but with few or no recent ancestors in common, and effectively forming distinct sub-breeds, with some pressure to separate them.

Siamese cats have been protagonists in literature and film for adults and children since the 1930s. British publisher Michael Joseph recorded his relationship with his Siamese cat in Charles: The Story of a Friendship (1943). Walt Disney's Lady and the Tramp (1955) features the cats "Si" and ""Am" in the "Siamese Cat Song" sequence ("We are Siamese if you please"). The 1958 film adaptation of Bell, Book and Candle features Kim Novak's Siamese cat "Pyewacket", a witch's familiar. Disney also employed a Siamese in the role of "DC" for its 1965 crime caper That Darn Cat!, with The New York Times commenting "The feline that plays the informant, as the F.B.I. puts it, is superb. [...] This elegant, blue-eyed creature is a paragon of suavity and grace".

Cathy, Sylvester is a very appropriate name for a tuxedo cat! Freddie's fur is soft, but he's not always very good at grooming those parts that are more difficult to reach, this could be due in to his arthritis, or possibly laziness!

Bama, your DF sounds very organised with all her "stuff", even if there is too much of it! Having things clean and tidy makes sorting and decluttering a lot easier, with hopefully no nasty surprises along the way .

Dogged, pork tenderloin in the slow cooker sounds delicious. We're also having pork on Sunday , as it is relatively cheap ATM.

Safe travels in your trip, Gma. That's a very long way to drive,. but how nice to spend Thanksgiving with your DSis #3.

Yesterday was reasonably successful, although I couldn't do that much in my garden as everything was still frozen! (It doesn't get the sun this time of year). I'm unsure whether the geraniums have survived, they can take a degree or two of frost, but if they collapse when they thaw, I'll know they've had too much! I had a successful time in town, followed by a very long phone call from DF PM, about church matters (one church warden is temporarily stepping back due to ill health, the other is currently looking after his wife who is recovering from a big operation. We do have two deputy wardens who can step up, but I think DF PM will be doing the lion's share. Fortunately , she is very wise, calm and levelheaded.)

I also managed to get all the laundry washed , dried, folded and PA before DH was safely home.

Today I think is supposed to be much milder, but wet. No real plans, but I would like to do some more in the bedroom, as I really need to finish it this coming week. I think tomorrow is "Stir Up Sunday", which is an indication I need to start seriously thinking about Christmas!

Edited to add: DH has just announced he is going out with his DF A today, so it would definitely be a good opportunity to get more decluttering /deep cleaning done in the bedroom!

Well, good luck in the bedroom, kittykatt! We've had frost and my flowers are done. That's one thing on the list for this weekend!

10am here. Been up since 7, but no time to post. DBD and DS are at a scout field trip, and for some reason (which I know and consider extremely stupid but it's what it is) we had to drop each of them off at a different train station for the same Prague-heading train (so at basically the same time), so both me and DH had to drive one kid. Whatever kinda?
Anyway, never got back here yesterday, but after much teenage drama, we do have somewhat appropriate attire for the photo session. The twins are in that stage when they will only wear baggy oversized stuff, no cleavage allowed (but also no turtleneck), in black or dark grey. I don't care what they wear for school, but oversized hoodie is NOT partaking in formal holiday photos! There was some compromise in the end, but I think this year's photos will be too mismatched. Next year, they are not getting a say and I will just order something online, because apparently, they don't compromise so neither will I (the deal was "burgundy dressier top or sweater" which I believed was giving them a lot of options while keeping their style - I did not try to push them for dresses or skirts, but yeah, I am the mean mom). Anyway... teens.
So now I have a couple hours of empty living room so I want to deep scrub the floor there and maybe even have DH help me move the sofa and work under it. So, off I go!

Good morning, Trissie! WTG standing your ground and getting the twins into something reasonably appropriate for a formal photo. And your plan for next year is genius! ( If it's any comfort , G13 YO's best friend, L 11yo, considers "formal attire" to be a cropped bra top, a minute pair of shorts that aren't denim, her mother's slingbacks and a cute little jacket if she thinks it's cold out!)

DH has been launched after finding my card box that has addresses in it (it disappeared into "his" cupboard during the renovations in the spare room, and it's now a literal cave in there, with random things just stuffed in ). I am still feeling nostalgia for the old set up, where everything was stored in an organised fashion and easily.accessible. He was also very willing to choose some beers he liked to make up the minimum amount needed for my Morrisons order, but so far has failed to find his old phone. (Mine keeps crashing even after a factory reset , so he's said I can borrow that one for now ... when he finds it!).

I'm going to sit in a civilised manner at the kitchen table and write some birthday cards, now I have the addresses to hand! I even have the stamps, and I can post them either today, if it stops raining, or tomorrow.

kitty ~ oh geez... good luck on the phone situation.
trissie ~ When they're older, they ask why you let them wear those horrible things for pictures. Go, mean mom!

Siamese cats -- In my early 20's, a roommate and I got 2 Siamese siblings. They were adorable. We named them after 2 elves in Lord of Rings - Galadriel and - I don't remember the other. G's great aunt had one that was so mean that she had to keep it on a chain when people came to visit.

3 am -- -- wide awake. Very proud of myself that I didn't bury myself in an old movie like I usually do. From the way I felt, I knew I wasn't going back to sleep, so I got up, got dressed, and dove into QT. Took some time to do extra reading. It was good.

Today's a busy day. Li'l H has riding lessons today AND tomorrow because last week's got messed up and the owner scheduled her wrong. We got there for the end-of-the-day lesson and the owner had her on earlier so there was no way to work her in. The good news is - the SUN WILL BE OUT today!
