Jasminum nudiflorum, the winter jasmine, is a slender, deciduous shrub native to China (Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Xizang (Tibet), Yunnan). The flower's blossoming peaks right after winter, which is why it is also named Yingchun (迎春) in Chinese, which means "the flower that welcomes Spring". It is widely cultivated as an ornamental and is reportedly naturalized in France and in scattered locations in the United States (Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland and New Jersey).

Winter Jasmine is a trailing, vine-like shrub, which grows to 3 m (10 ft) tall and wide, with arching green shoots and opposite, pinnate, dark green leaves. Each leaf is divided into three oval-oblong leaflets which are about 3 cm long.

As its name suggests, in the Northern Hemisphere winter jasmine flowers from November to March. The solitary flowers, often appearing on the bare stems (hence the Latin nudiflorum, literally "naked flower")have six petals and are bright yellow, or white, about 1 cm across, appearing in the leaf axils.

Jasminum nudiflorum is valued by gardeners as one of the few plants that are in flower during the winter months. It is frequently trained against a wall to provide extra warmth and shelter, but also lends itself to groundcover. It tolerates hard pruning and should be pruned in spring immediately after flowering; regular pruning will help to prevent bare patches. It can also be grown as a bonsai and is very tolerant of the wiring methods. It likes full sun or partial shade and is hardy.

Winter Jasmine has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, and can be propagated using the layering technique.

Gma, you're getting so much done! I love your descriptions of your decorations. When I was a little girl, the tree and decorations went up about a week or so before Christmas, and stayed up until they were taken down on 5th January.. I can remember how bare everything looked! When we were married and had our own home, I was now in charge of putting up and taking down the decorations, so I realised just how much work it was! I also worked outside the home, but usually had the week before Christmas and the week between Christmas and new year off, so I liked to get everything down and put away before I went back to the office, rather than having to deal with it after a day at work. And somehow the habit has stuck!

Today Waitrose are delivering between 9am and 10 am. DH is up, showered and dressed, so it doesn't matter if they're early. My aim for this morning is to put the groceries away and clean the kitchen. We had a thick frost last night and it's currently -2C, so no gardening for me today, but hopefully a walk if the weather stays dry. DH is planning to meet his friends at midday, and this evening we'll be having a steak supper to celebrate new year's Eve.

Kittykatt, thanks for the start. I had no idea there was a winter jasmine. Jasmine is one of my favorite smells. Our neighbours on the north wall have a beautiful pink jasmine plant, it grows over the hedge on our side and blooms generously once or twice in the year. But never in winter. Good luck with the cold weather and your DH at home.

Morning all. Winter flowering plants? That would be so pretty. One can only dream up here. It's winter wonderland. Except it was a couple days ago now it warmed up too much and it's a sloppy muddy mess of melting. And ice. I'd love winter flowers.

I have to decide what to do with my tree. I usually have it down now but I think I have to fix it a bit. Different Christmas not being here. I left the cats unattended. Need to straighten it and put some stuff back on it cause I think at least the kids will come here tomorrow.

Frenchie it's nice you had time to come around here more often this week.

Gma that's great you're digging out all your own Christmas decor. Maybe you can combine it with some of mom's special things yet.

Anyway I am floundering a bit today. Need to text and talk to my sister and figure out if she wants to come to our get together. She did Christmas eve and Christmas day for a bit with mom and dad. Ds and ddil went to her house Christmas eve and then ddil side Christmas day. I think I'm aiming at something tomorrow for gifts for the kids and dinner. Sister mentioned going snowmobiling tomorrow maybe but it's the only day dh and I get off together or wait until Sunday. So I want to see if they will be here or just the kids and dad. Not sure if we will try to bring mom out.

So I need to clean my house better.. wrap what I have for the kids. Decide what we're having. For sure. Figure out when to see mom. I have not been grocery shopping since before the trip. Figure out what ds 16 might actually want and order him something.

Gma, I had to look up what a Dala Swedish horse is. They are very colourful and distinctive, and I could see them making great Christmas decorations.

Thank you for starting us off, Kittykatt, and for your kind words about Germane. Her appetite comes and goes. We are on to our fourth brand now, FirstMate Pork And Apple. She loved it last night, wouldn't eat it this morning, now loves it and is asking for seconds. It's never dull, feeding this dog, LOL.
I am really happy with the heating pad set up. It can't be on all of the time, but even when it's off it is providing a good barrier between Germane and the cold tiles on the floor. She seems happy with the set up.

Lauralind, we are having such a cold winter here that they are opening the Rideau Canal today. There was one winter when they never got it open, because it never got cold enough to freeze to a safe level.
