What is Modern Pentathlon?
Modern Pentathlon comprises five different disciplines: swimming, fencing, horse riding (show jumping), pistol shooting and running.
The last two have been combined in recent Olympic Games what is known as the laser run.

By whom, where and when was Modern Pentathlon invented?
The original pentathlon - consisting of running, jumping, spear-throwing, discus and wrestling - was the climax of the Games in Ancient Greece. It held a position of unique importance with the winner ranked as 'Victor Ludorum'.
The modern version was introduced by Pierre de Coubertin at the Stockholm Games in 1912. It was his belief that this event would test “a man’s moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing thereby a complete athlete”.

What are the rules of Modern Pentathlon?
Athletes score points through their performances in the first three events - swimming, fencing and show jumping.
Those points are converted to starting times for the closing laser run - a 3.2km cross-country test including four rounds of laser pistol shooting.
Having originally been held over five days, with one event per day, the Olympic modern pentathlon now takes just two with the first day comprising the ranking round of fencing where each competitor faces another in round-robin once.
The second day starts with the 200m freestyle swim followed by the fencing bonus round in which athletes are eliminated once defeated.
Next up is show jumping where the athletes are paired with unfamiliar horses before taking a course of 12 obstacles.
The climax is the laser run where the first athlete across the line takes gold.

Modern Pentathlon and the Olympics
Modern pentathlon made its first Olympic appearance as an individual event at Stockholm 1912 with a team event added at Helsinki 1952.
There were major changes for Atlanta 1996 with the team event dropped and the entire event taking place on one day instead of five.
Sydney 2000 hosted the first Olympic women's modern pentathlon competition.
At London 2012, the shooting and running disciplines were combined with laser guns used instead of lead-firing pistols for the first time for both safety reasons and reduced environmental impact.
And at Rio 2016, the fencing ranking round was introduced with a bonus round taking place alongside the other four disciplines on the second day.

Best Modern Pentathletes to watch
Britain's Joe Choong added the world title in 2022 to his Olympic gold from Tokyo 2020.
He was chased home in Alexandria by Egypt's Mohamed El-Gendy, a year after brother Ahmed El-Gendy took silver in Tokyo.
Choong's compatriot Kate French won women's gold in Tokyo ahead of Lithuania's London 2012 champion Laura Asadauskaite.

In honour of the upcoming Olympic Games, I wanted to do a run of Winter Olympics sports, but there seems to be not one winter sport beginning with "M"! Or "T" or "W" either, but we can borrow from Summer Olympics :-)

ETA because I somehow missed all the "S" winter sports like ski jumping, snowboard, speed skating etc :-)

Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. Modern pentathlon sou ds extremely energetic for a Monday morning!

Gma, I'm so glad your safe. The events in Minneapolis have filtered over to the news here. :( I am struggling to believe this kind of thing is happening in a civilised country. :( WTG on cleaning your fridge

Dogged, I'm glad you're feeling better. WTG finding some "hidden treasures"!

Helia, I like to post the upcoming weeks adventures and must sis on Sunday evening if I possibly can. That way, even if I wake up not feeling able to face the week ahead, my list tells me that I can! :D

Last night, Matilda refused to come to bed, but wanted to carry on partying and racing around, so I had Jude for company instead and just shut the bedroom door. Jude was the perfect little guest and slept in the small of my back all night. Matilda is now very angry as her supper is now spoiled, (ske side come and eat it when it was fresh!) and she had to sleep on the landing carpet last night, instead of a nice soft bed!!!

Today, DH goes to the office, and I have a lot to do at home. I would also like to get outside if it's dry, but we shall see!

So, happy Monday!

good morning to you too, kittykatt! enjoy the solitude! :-)
so glad you are safe, gma, you've been on my mind a lot lately!

I was supposed to drive the girls and their stuff to the meeting point for the school ski trip, but the parents of their best friend volunteered to take them. These are people who always ask me for a ride, and at the last outing, I got kinda mad that they asked me to drive their daughter there and then they went to pick her up but did not offer my girls a ride (I mean, don't you think that's really rude? To not offer the ride if you are going anyway after always asking for one?), so I finally told my girls I was not OK with being taken advantage of and apparently they told their friend. So today they are doing the drive, because I think they will need me to do the Friday pick up.

Anyway I already requested home office for today, and I am not cancelling it :-) I will be as productive working from home, if not more, as from the office, and I can use the time I'd spend chatting with colleagues on my house. The week is looking good - only one extra activity (DBD's speech therapy apt today); oops, forgot I am meeting the scout leader for coffee on Friday afternoon, so that makes two. Still doable!

It's a great idea for the week, trissie! There is Skiing, Skeleton, Snowboarding. How about Hockey for tHursday  Wednesday could be "winning" or "winners"
kittykatt (and all), thanks for your concern, and to all who recognize that there is craziness going on. Any the education I have ahd about leadership is that the concept of Servant Leader makes for the best kind of community and government.

the door of my fridge will wait for another day. And the freezer for another time. I have some chilled cookie dough to bake in the next few days. The main body wasn't as bad as I expected. Only 1 green fuzzy. And the 2 year old mayonnaise from the store probably has so many preservatives in it that it would be OK, but.... I'll get fresh when I need it. I need to start buying the small bottles of things. I'm only one person.
And right now, a tired person, so good night until my morning.

Good for you for standing your ground, Trissie! And quite right too, to keep your day WFH. I can totally understand how you're even more productive -no commute time and no unwanted distractions with everyone else's issues!

Sleep well, Gma!

Cat update: Jude is back stretched out on the bed, Freddie has been for his morning snack, and Matilda still isn't speaking to me, although she has used her bowl rather noisily to eat some biscuits.

Thank you for the sporting start, trissie. I was going to suggest that you just slap the needed letter onto the front of a winter sport, but I like Gma's suggestion better.

Oh, dear, Kittykatt, I can hear the angry cat crunching from here! I hope that Matilda forgives you over the course of the day.

trissie, I am glad that speaking out has led to people treating you with more consideration. I have a hard time protecting my boundaries due to my start in life, so I can understand how hard and frustrating it is.

Gma, big WTG on the fridge clean out. I am not looking forward to mine, LOL.

I updated goal status from last week, but have not added new goals:
