Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein (26 April 1889 – 29 April 1951) was an Austro-British philosopher who worked primarily in logic, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of language.

From 1929 to 1947, Wittgenstein taught at the University of Cambridge. Despite his position, only one book of his philosophy was published during his life: the 75-page Logisch-Philosophische Abhandlung (Logical-Philosophical Treatise, 1921), which appeared, together with an English translation, in 1922 under the Latin title Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. His only other published works were an article, "Some Remarks on Logical Form" (1929); a review of The Science of Logic, by P. Coffey; and a children's dictionary. His voluminous manuscripts were edited and published posthumously. The first and best-known of this posthumous series is the 1953 book Philosophical Investigations. A 1999 survey among American university and college teachers ranked Philosophical Investigations as the most important book of 20th-century philosophy, standing out as "the one crossover masterpiece in twentieth-century philosophy, appealing across diverse specializations and philosophical orientations".

His philosophy is often divided into an early period, exemplified by the Tractatus, and a later period, articulated primarily in the Philosophical Investigations. The "early Wittgenstein" was concerned with the logical relationship between propositions and the world, and he believed that by providing an account of the logic underlying this relationship, he had solved all philosophical problems. The "later Wittgenstein" rejected many of the assumptions of the Tractatus, arguing that the meaning of words is best understood as their use within a given language game. More precisely, Wittgenstein wrote, "For a large class of cases of the employment of the word 'meaning'—though not for all—this word can be explained in this way: the meaning of a word is its use in the language."

Born in Vienna into one of Europe's richest families, he inherited a fortune from his father in 1913. Before World War I, he "made a very generous financial bequest to a group of poets and artists chosen by Ludwig von Ficker, the editor of Der Brenner, from artists in need. These included [Georg] Trakl as well as Rainer Maria Rilke and the architect Adolf Loos", as well as the painter Oskar Kokoschka. "In autumn 1916, as his sister reported, 'Ludwig made a donation of a million crowns [equivalent to about $3.6 million in 2024] for the construction of a 30 cm mortar.'" Later, in a period of severe personal depression after World War I, he gave away his remaining fortune to his brothers and sisters. Three of his four older brothers died by separate acts of suicide.

Wittgenstein left academia several times: serving as an officer on the front line during World War I, where he was decorated a number of times for his courage; teaching in schools in remote Austrian villages, where he encountered controversy for using sometimes violent corporal punishment on both girls and boys (see, for example, the Haidbauer incident), especially during mathematics classes; working during World War II as a hospital porter in London; and working as a hospital laboratory technician at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne.

It's true that I read more murder mysteries than books of philosophy, but if four brothers are given a fortune and three of them die by suicide, aren't we even slightly suspicious of Brother Number 4?
Thank you for another interesting start, trissie. I have finally found my mojo, so I am sorting through my purchases to find homes for them. I started one of my rice mixes in the rice cooker. I have decided to call them all "pease porridge" because grains and/or legumes and/or pulses is a mouthful. It's always an experiment and this particular batch has come out a bit odd. The rice cooker sounds like it's growling at me. Less of a happy burbling and more of a "I'll make you pay for this" kind of a sound.

I have reorganized my desk to move the laptop on to it, which will allow me to fold the table down to half its size. But in the meantime, I have also made a mess to clean up. Maybe tomorrow.

Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for another interesting start.

Dogged, I agree with you with those brothers, especially if brother no. 4 stands to gain from his siblings' deaths..(or maybe I've read too much Agatha Christie?)

Yesterday was ... interesting. I had a very prompt call back from a lovely doctor, and we ended up talking mostly.about Fred. She's especially interested in his medication (fluoxetine) that makes him much calmer and a lot less angry, so biting is only.an occasional occurrence now, as she also has a very angry cat! She's going to ask her vet for some help for him. But we did squeeze in enough time to prescribe antibiotics for me (two kinds,.and I can't have penicillin, which is the gold stand for cat bites). So now I'm feeling.tjat a battle between Good and Bad is going on inside (which it sort of is!) but on the plus side,.the redness is starting.to go down already. I joked to DH that I was feeling like an Old Person with so many pills to take (one has to be taken three times a day, the other just once a day, but with a double dose to begin with - this doctor evidently means business! ) But I did manage to clean the sitting room, even though I haven't done "put away" at the end yet. That's a job for today.

DH goes to the office today, so I'll get some quiet, after yesterday's grumpiness. (My day today started at 6 am with him wanting to know where something.was - who needs an alarm clock?) At least he should find out about the redundancy / early retirement next week. I really hope so,.and I hope he gets it,.as I really can't take much more of this grumpiness - we've been living with this for months now. I'm trying.my best to be patient and supportive throughout this very difficult time for him, but I'm going to confess it's nice to have a break from it all when he goes to the office.

It's raining again today, which doesn't help either, but if does dry up at all,.I would like to get out for a walk. The kitchen needs its weekly clean and it would be good if I could finally clean and declutter the junk drawer today, so there's plenty to keep me occupied. :D

Kittykatt, it sounds like you helped your doctor as much as she helped you! I'm glad that they have a plan for the bite, and I hope that Mr. Freddie is remorseful for all that he has put you through.

Whatever was wrong with me earlier has passed. I feel like myself again. And Germane is pleased to see me eating my pease porridge with vegetables so that she can have pieces of carrot from my bowl. She has a plate of kibble in her pen and two types of wet dog food in her dish in the kitchen, but neither will do. She did eat earlier in the day, so I know that she has had something.

I got my groceries put away. That means that tomorrow, I can put the stuff back in the bin. I had borrowed the bin to get the shopping up from the car. And then I can use the handtruck to take the recycling to the basement. And that will free up room in the front entrance so that I can take the loaded stairwalking handtruck to the basement lockers. But I've realized that I can't take the whole load at once. I won't be able to get it up the stairs unless I lighten the load.

So that gives me some structure for tomorrow. For now, I'm heading to bed. See you later!

Wednesday
Put away dry laundry
Put away the big drying rack
Started putting away groceries
Started new canister for red rice and labeled it
Started filling rice cooker.
Started new canister for whole wheat flour
Took a container of cottage roll broth from the freezer and heated it
Added water to broth for the rice cooker and started it
Finished putting away the groceries
Cleaned up after dog

Sleep well, Dogged! I'm glad you're feeling better now.

To answer your question from yesterday, I think it's a bit of both. I ploughed my way through the NICE website yesterday, where cat bites have a section all to themselves. (Dogs and other "traditional" pets get lumped together! Even though dogs can potentially do a *lot* more damage.) Everywhere else, the latest guidance is, understandably , to reduce antibiotic usage and the length of courses, but not with the cat bites! Even if the skin doesn't appear to be broken, but the indentation from the teeth has gone in a long way, a short course would likely be still recommended. If the skin is broken but you've caught it straight away, (within 6-8 hours) then a longer course would be in order, and if infection has set in then the full blown weekly course is prescribed. Oh, and something else that's changed recently with cat bites is the tetanus injection guidelines. It used to be that you had a course of 4(?) as a child and then one as an adult, and that was it for life. But not any more. Now I have the delights of a tetanus jab to look forward to on Monday afternoon. (As Freddie is an indoor cat apart from going for supervised walks, I escape the additional immunoglobulin in the other arm I would have been given otherwise!)

So far, the new health centre seems *not* to look on patients as an inconvenience interrupting their day, which is a refreshing change. :D Also, when I mentioned cat bite and that the econsult form I had tried to fill in had turned red and told me to ring straight away, that got the receptionist's attention. So I think maybe better training? Or maybe just kinder people more suited to a job dealing with people?

Interesting, kittykatt, it's never been "tetanus for life" here, it used to be "every 10 years" but they changed it to "every 15", but the golden rule is "in case of injury with potential contamination, if the vaccines is over 1 year or there is no data on vaccine, vaccinate right away". Re cat and dog bites, my vet friend told me that while dog bites do more "bludgeoning damage", the wound is easy to clean and their saliva does not contain that many harmful bacteria (something about enzymes or whatever). Cat bites are deep puncture wounds which are harder to clean, and close quickly, trapping their mix of dangerous bacteria deep in tissue, resulting in quick and dangerous inflamation.
Dogged, glad you are feeling better! Re carrying lighter loads, there's a saying in Czech that goes "Why did the lazy man overwork himself? Because he didn't want to go twice!" and it's so true! :-)

Unlike you both, though, when I see a family where three brothers commit suicide and one becomes a philosopher, I don't suspect murder, but think "mental illnesses run deep in that family!" :-) They did have another brother who was a famous piano player, though.

DH had a look at my car last night - he has a small car diagnostic device that allows him to read basic engine data (the kind that will NOT appear on the dashboard), and the reading he got said something about glow plug circuit problems. That might be an easy fix, but we shall see - I called my repair shop, but they only do basic stuff, so they can replace wiring and/or the glow plug, but if it's electronics, I would have to take the car to the large shop in the city. I really like our repair shop, they are the best in doing mechanical repairs and since we're long term customers, they always get us in within a day, but they deal with older, less complicated cars and send the specialized electronic issues elsewhere.
Needless to say, I am really glad I actually went to the notary yesterday, because trying to fit THAT in while dealing with a faulty car would just not work out. And also glad that I got kitchen clean yesterday, which puts me ahead on cleaning schedule (and even on a good week, my Wednesdays are difficult). Also glad that this did not happen while we were somewhere far away. Practise my gratitudes, right? :-)

Good morning:)
Thanks for yet another enlightening start, trissie . I do hope your car is an easy fix. WTG on getting ahead of cleaning schedule.
Kittykatt Glad that you are seeing early improvement! Hope Fred is extra nice to you.
Dogged Sleep well - happy to hear you are feeling better.

I'm up .
Will spend the morning looking after the Much Needed DPC's, Bill Payments and whatever else I can achieve. Then, I go shopping for gym shoes. (Waay overdue: my current pair is approximately 6-8 yrs old , no grip left)
By the time I'm back, the wind should be better - we go for our walk with dpup. Then, housework and cooking.

And now, I'm off to start my quest:)

Glad you're getting the meds, Kitty. I'm with trissie and have not heard of tetanus for life. Enjoy the quiet day with dh at work.
Doggedly, I think you're right about the weather and the birds at our bird feeder - I think they do eat more when it's colder, except when it's so cold they opt to stay home. I wonder if the super busy day Sunday was because they burned so many calories during the previous super cold days and were replenishing them in the warmer weather? Getting groceries in and recycling out of your place sounds very complicated.
Those are all very good things in regard to your car's problem, trissie! Yes, WTG seeing the positive. I hope your Wednesday goes smoothly with payroll and then errands. And also WTG with your clean kitchen!
Good luck with the DPCs and bill payment, Kitkat. I hope you find a good pair of gym shoes - that is really old! That's a good reminder to me that I need to replace my running shoes which are a couple years old.

Last night, we were a party of 5 for dinner, smaller than usual, but dd30 brought one new friend. After dinner, everyone sat in the living room, enjoyed the fire dh made, and drank tea. Around 9 pm, the dinner guests went home. I'd heard back from KY that those dates in March work, so I booked a bnb in Austin, TX for our long weekend away. 8-)

Today is quite open, a bit of a mid-week surprise. I do have a payroll meeting at 10. I think the girls are swimming this morning at the gym, so I plan to join them. I also need to get my WF groceries and prep for my class tomorrow morning. And there are always the last NY cards and writing. We are watching Fable tonight. For dinner, I'm making a favorite recipe of ours, vinegar chicken with olives and a roast veggie TBD.

Next:
- some qt
- touch base with the girls
- maybe - WF errand?

Later:
- put away groceries
- 10-10:30 payroll mtg
