Socrates ( c. 470 – 399 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher from Classical Athens, perhaps the first Western moral philosopher, and a major inspiration on his student Plato, who largely founded the tradition of Western philosophy. An enigmatic figure, Socrates authored no texts and is known mainly through the posthumous accounts of classical writers, particularly his students Plato and Xenophon. These accounts are written as dialogues, in which Socrates and his interlocutors examine a subject in the style of question and answer; they gave rise to the Socratic dialogue literary genre.

Contradictory accounts of Socrates make a reconstruction of his philosophy nearly impossible, a situation known as the Socratic problem. Socrates was a polarizing figure in Athenian society. In 399 BC, he was accused of impiety and corrupting the youth. After a trial that lasted a day, he was sentenced to death. As related by Plato, he was put to death by administration of poison after refusing offers from allies to help him escape.

Good morning everyone and happy Saturday! Happy Valentine's Day to all who celebrate.

L.Ann, I'm sure Little Bit's parents will treasure that card she's made for them (with your help, of course!).

Dogged, yes, duck is very fatty. If it's in a casserole , could you put it I. The fridges, then the fat should rise to the top and solidify,.so you could just skim it off. When I roast duck, I always score the skin several times in a "V" shape and then rub with rock salt,.and that makes a lot of the fat come out. But I'm guessing that wouldn't be suitable for Germane, due to the salt!

I think DH is still on a "high" as he knows he's going, having had confirmation in writing. ATM, the exact details are a relatively "minor" thing to him. Being realistic, the very earliest he can go will be mid/ end of April, as it's going to take them at least that long to work his pension details our and send him a statement. His redundancy package shouldn't be so complicated, but that, of course , will take time too. But you're right, like waiting for Christmas, it will come eventually!

I'm not sure what's happening today yet. DH mentioned a "quiet" Saturday for him yesterday, but, if course, that could have changed overnight. According to the Met Office we were supposed to get anything up to 6cm (!) of snow last night , but looking out the window this morning there is definitely no snow, and I'm not even sure about a frost. The temperature has definitely dropped overnight though, so I'll wait to go out until it's warmed up, in case there are icy patches.

I'd like to make progress with the tablecloth today, and if the weather is dry then a walk and some garden time would be good. And I need to bake for the Y , and also research liners for the cupboard, so the saucepans dont leave marks on the bottom of it.

We are expecting snow too, kittykatt - some areas (luckily not ours) are expected to get up to 5cm (2 inches) within 3 hours! Well hoping it will last for another week, for our ski trip!

We're already seen DBD off for her scout trip today - they are going to an observatory. DS is going too, but the older kids are doing the evening program. Though how much will be visible with all the snowy clouds... I have big plans for today and I'd like to convince DH to do some painting this weekend - we shall see if we have some white paint for the kitchen, as that one looks the worst. It's a two hour job, if I remember correctly from the last time we did it - you spend more time getting everything ready and then cleaning up than on the actual painting! I also want to defrost both freezers and take stock of what we have. And the trees need pruning, but that can probably wait - I may run out to handle the fruit bushes.

I think we got your snow. It was one of those beautiful snowfalls with large snow flakes last night.
trissie - I hope you get the snow you wish for but, frankly, I'm done with this winter It's been too cold much too long.
Having said that:

It's pretty outside, looks like the sun may come out. The temp. is expected to go to 2 C - can't complain. I did not even feel a wind when we went out with dpup.
I had no time to get back here last night. Dson picked up late and then we had to leave.
This is a long weekend.
Today, I have a gym class - and pup walk scheduled. Might pick up some groceries. Otherwise, I'll be "at it". DH handed over a hamper full of laundry... I also have some puppy throws, pup mattress cover to wash.

kittykatt, thanks for the Socratic start. So glad that your DH can quit soon. I hope we're weather twins and you have this wonderfully sunny weather at last ! Even walking on sidewalks is impossible in many places here. Floods in many areas in France, and each evening before leaving work I need to check what the tide timetable is before deciding on which road to use to drive back home - close to the coast some rivers can't flow into the sea by high tide and the roads get flooded at regular intervals.

trissie, oh brave woman, a painting project ! As for snow, I hope you get the right amount for your activities and your ski trip and no more than that !

Sunny day, it's been so long. Everywhere is damp and squishy, and this year it's not just in Brittany but most of France. The southern half of the country had Storm Nils this past week, strong winds and more rain. And there is more to come.
Everyday while driving to and from work I see the beautiful mimosa trees, they bloom every year in February and I love the smell. It's the first winter I haven't had a chance to smell the yellow blooms, because of the ugly weather. This morning I drove DS10 to sports and went mimosa-hunting on my way to the bakery. But the only mimosas I saw where too far from the walkways, I couldn't really catch their smells.
I'm considering going on a mimosa hunt this afternoon. Maybe using Google Street View to search for a street nearby with mimosa.
Kids are on school break for 2 weeks.

Good luck on the mimosa hunt! We've had muddy weather this week too - and it's cold muddy, so DBD insist on wearing her warm lila snowpants to school. There's been a LOT of late night snow pants washing!

I'm with you kitkat - done with snow and cold and winter. This may have been the coldest winter since we moved here in 2001 -- not sure. That polar vortex needs to stay over the north pole and stop visiting us down here in Michigan. It's also been very snowy, but maybe there were snowier winters. It's sunny here! Hope you're getting the sun too!
Thanks for the start, Kitty! I've heard a bit about Socrates and the Socratic method, which I use sometimes in my classroom. If a student makes a mistake, I might ask them to explain how they got that answer; often, as they explain themselves, they see the error. However, I had Socrates and Plato mixed up in terms of drinking the hemlock. Happy for your DH! That's a nice feeling! Very nice he gets a pension. Those aren't so common here anymore -- I think. 401K investment programs are more common and some (all?) employers contribute to those as well. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Nice to see you FFB! Glad you have sunshine! Ooh, mimosa trees. We don't have those here. I had to look them up - they are pretty and look almost tropical to me. Are they blooming? --I asked dh if there are mimosa trees in the Netherlands, and he said, "No, we have beets and cabbages and potatoes." I pointed out that they DO have trees as well. . . He said, "We do," but apparently they're not as interesting as mimosa trees.

Ths sun is shining and it is 27*F, which is really warm for us! Better yet, it's forecast to get up to 47*F this afternoon. And maybe we'll get to 50F tomorrow. The snow layer is so thick it will take a while for it all to melt, but that process has already started. Spring WILL come!

Yesterday, I was tired and not too productive after I did my payroll task for the day. I had to figure out some things with google sheets to do it; I got some help and was able to complete the task. I did have coffee with MM in the morning as well.

Today, I need to do the many things I didn't do yesterday: laundry (dh leaves on a work trip tomorrow), jogging, finish NY cards, writing time, BD card for ddil bought, written, and in the mail, V Day card for dh bought and written. Dinner may just be a leftover meal from the freezer; or, I'll make the tuna pasta I didn't make Thursday night.

trissie, where will you go skiing ? I think you must have ski resorts in your own country, but I remember you went to Austria in the past for some ski time. We will have three days of ski the week after the next, I can't wait to see how my sons manage with skis on their feet !

helia Good luck finishing the NY cards. I suppose you will be glad when you're done. LOL at the cabbages and beets and potatoes ! I suppose we all have them. ANd I think at this time of year they grow roses instead of tulips so they can sell them on Valentine's Day at florists. I saw several men buying red roses this morning and I know my dad faithfully buys one for my mum every year on Feb 14th.

I walked almost one hour, canvassing the streets close to home, then a bit further, until I saw a mimosa tree I could smell. I could actually touch the branches and put the tiny yellow pom-pom blooms under my nose . Then I used my gps to find my way back home and saw another one, close enough to smell but not to touch. And now back home.
