Sir Walter Raleigh ( c. 1553 – 29 October 1618) was an English statesman, soldier, writer and explorer. One of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era, he played a leading part in English colonisation of North America, suppressed rebellion in Ireland, helped defend England against the Spanish Armada and held political positions under Elizabeth I.

Raleigh was born to a landed gentry family of Protestant faith in Devon, the son of Walter Raleigh and Catherine Champernowne. He was the younger half-brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of Sir Richard Grenville. Little is known of his early life, though in his late teens he spent some time in France taking part in the religious civil wars. In his 20s he took part in the suppression of rebellion in the colonisation of Ireland; he also participated in the siege of Smerwick. Later, he became a landlord of property in Ireland and mayor of Youghal in east Munster.

He rose rapidly in the favour of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1585. He was granted a royal patent to explore Virginia, paving the way for future English settlements. In 1591, he secretly married Elizabeth Throckmorton, one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting, without the Queen's permission, for which he and his wife were sent to the Tower of London. After his release, they retired to his estate at Sherborne, Dorset.

In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in South America and sailed to find it, publishing an exaggerated account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". After Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, Raleigh was again imprisoned in the Tower, this time for being involved in the Main Plot against King James I, who was not favourably disposed towards him. In 1616, he was released to lead a second expedition in search of El Dorado. During the expedition, men led by his top commander sacked a Spanish outpost, in violation of both the terms of his pardon and the 1604 peace treaty with Spain. Raleigh returned to England and, to appease the Spanish, he was arrested and executed in 1618.

L.Ann, I'm glad the mole.was nothing to worry about.

Dogged, that does sound bizarre about the cables. Our internet company assumed we were technologically illiterate, and sent a box with everything in , very clear instructions (!) and an engineer. You're right and it is strange how our animals have their vaccination certificates on paper as well as on the computer , whereas for us it's *all* computerized. Which is great, until the computer goes down, or things get lost during the transition.

Gma, DH has started the long process of applying for his works pension. You can nominate a beneficiary should anything happen to you, but it *has* to be either your married spouse, or you have to be in a civil partnership. (This was introduced some years ago, before the laws changed for gay marriage. This meant that a committed couple could enter into a civil partnership - I think that takes place at a registry office, and it's a legally binding ceremony, and it gives the partners the same protection as marriage.) Over here, the marriage certificate was traditionally given to the woman, as it was her "protection", proving that she was married. Hence the search for my birth certificate and marriage certificate. And I was very pleased with my filing system,.at least for important things - it took me less than 5 minutes, and they were in the exact box file they should have been. No sign of my childhood vaccination records, (my mother had dementia , so it's possible they got destroyed) but I did find lots of other interesting papers, including my baptism certificate.

Today is Ash Wednesday, and out church has two services, one at 10.30 am and one at 7pm. The evening service is designed to accommodate those people who work a traditional.job, and the morning one is designed for those people (mostly older) who can't get transport in the evening, or don't like going out after dark when it's going to be cold, almost certainly raining, and possibly icy! Or, who just find the morning service more convenient. It was started as an experiment a few years ago,.and has been well attended,.so was kept.

Today DF PM is picking me.up at 9.45.am, from the usual.spot. So I need to leave at 9.30.am.to walk down to the main road. Before then I would like to achieve * something* round the house, even if it's just taking the rubbish out!

Kittykatt, thanks for the start, never heard of Sir Raleigh so t's something interesting to learn about while bored at payroll. I hope the Ash Wednesday service is good / meaningful / not sure what adjective fits.

Rainy day again. A few important tasks to do at payroll, Boss is away today so I can focus on tasks with no risk of being interrupted at any time.
We just learned one of my coworkers will be a father in August, he seems very happy. It's always good to hear happy news, we need them these days.

I did not get back last night: but I made it to the gym and worked those weights, and push ups.
Beds were changed - so WHB is officially done for a week.
Today I will stick to the "plan". The only outing scheduled is a pick up from school:) My DLittle GD is staying with me this afternoon.

The freezing rain/drizzle is here. So far it's melting on the surfaces. (Yesterday was warm: I had to open my jacket when I was out )
Apparently, the precipitation might stay with us overnight...
Having seen what an ice build up can do during the 2013 ice storm I'm not too relaxed about this kind of weather.

FFB, I'm glad you can have uninterrupted time at work today. For a humorous look at Walter Raleigh, he appears as a character in the BBC TV series Blackadder. (Series 2, episode 3). Very entertaining, but comes with the usual language/ innuendo warnings before letting g kids watch it!

KitKat, rain and dropping temperatures does not sound a good combination. Enjoy your time with little DGD! No sign of the vaccination records, but I still have the physical scar from two of them, which is "proof".

Back home again after a very thought provoking Ash Wednesday service, with an excellent preacher. Afterwards, DF PM and I went for coffee, and then she very kindly dropped me back home. It's raining, so just a few minutes outside for me. I'm having lunch now, then I need to tackle the kitchen.
