Gerard Manley Hopkins (28 July 1844 – 8 June 1889) was an English poet and Jesuit priest, whose posthumous fame places him among the leading English poets. His prosody – notably his concept of sprung rhythm – established him as an innovator, as did his praise of God through vivid use of imagery and nature.

Much of Hopkins's historical importance has to do with the changes he brought to the form of poetry, which ran contrary to conventional ideas of metre. Prior to Hopkins, most Middle English and Modern English poetry was based on a rhythmic structure inherited from the Norman side of English literary heritage. This structure is based on repeating "feet" of two or three syllables, with the stressed syllable falling in the same place on each repetition. Hopkins called this structure "running rhythm", and although he wrote some of his early verse in running rhythm, he became fascinated with the older rhythmic structure of the Anglo-Saxon tradition, of which Beowulf is the most famous example.

Hopkins called his own rhythmic structure sprung rhythm. Sprung rhythm is structured around feet with a variable number of syllables, generally between one and four syllables per foot, with the stress always falling on the first syllable in a foot. Hopkins saw sprung rhythm as a way to escape the constraints of running rhythm, which he said inevitably pushed poetry written in it to become "same and tame". In this way, Hopkins's sprung rhythm can be seen as anticipating much of free verse.

Only after his death did Robert Bridges publish a few of Hopkins's mature poems in anthologies, hoping to prepare for wider acceptance of his style. By 1930 Hopkins's work was seen as one of the most original literary advances of his century. It intrigued such leading 20th-century poets as T. S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, W. H. Auden, Stephen Spender and Cecil Day-Lewis.

KitKat, I always think time spent with grandparents and grandchildren is very precious.

Helia, I usually bake once a week and store whatever cake I've made in an airtight tin. I usually aim for it to last 4- 5 days, but, if we eat all the cake over a couple of days, the rest of the week is cakeless!

A whole can of dog food eaten by Germane no is certainly something to celebrate, Dogged!

So, Monday morning, and the start of a busy week. This means I need to be diligent about self care, and also diligent about *not* wasting time doom scrolling when nothing on my list appeals!

Working from home today, because since our kids have spring break in two different weeks and we're running with the "the kid that would have the hardest time catching up will not miss school" rule, all the girls are home and somebody has to be here for DBD. Good morning, Trissie! I found my old school poetry book yesterday, which I'm keeping, admit has many "treasures", and the rest, as they say is history!

I think GMH was a very complicated individual, and a lot of his poetry reflects his mental health difficulties and crises, but amongst all the gloom and doom are some real gems like today's examples, which are cheerful and uplifting - and rather more encouraging!for a Monday morning!

I'm sure you'll make the very most of a WFH day. And how wise you were over deciding which week to have your holiday.

The health centre rang at 8 am to rearrange my appointment, as the nurse is off sick. They did offer me an appointment at 8.15, but I had to politely decline , as it takes 15 minutes to walk there and DH has taken the car today, so I felt it would be cutting it too fine. I don't like to be late or dashing in breathless at the last minute! So it's now 11.45, which suits is both.

It's a beautiful sunny day and 14 C, Freddie has had his walk, and we've both shared some Greek yogurt for breakfast. I'm going to have an hour or so in my garden now.

Very cold outside : 14 F with 9 F windchill... but, beautiful sunshine. Had to be careful in the back with all the ice.

and an afternoon walk with pup

kitkat, we are lucky that both mine and DH's job can be done remotely, and that we're both senior/essential enough that rules for "normal employees" don't really apply. It would be very hard otherwise!
L.Ann, I think I will skip on those bagpipes, my music taste is very eclectic (my husband laughs at me that I am probably the only person on Earth whose youtube/spotify favourites will include classical music, Johnny Cash, french chansons, Linkin Park and Pink! ), but not THAT eclectic!
