Georges Pierre Seurat (2 December 1859 – 29 March 1891) was a French post-Impressionist artist. He devised the painting techniques known as chromoluminarism and pointillism and used conté crayon for drawings on paper with a rough surface.

Seurat's artistic personality combined qualities that are usually thought of as opposed and incompatible: on the one hand, his extreme and delicate sensibility, on the other, a passion for logical abstraction and an almost mathematical precision of mind. His large-scale work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884–1886) altered the direction of modern art by initiating Neo-Impressionism, and is one of the icons of late 19th-century painting.

Seurat took to heart the colour theorists' notion of a scientific approach to painting. He believed that a painter could use colour to create harmony and emotion in art in the same way that a musician uses counterpoint and variation to create harmony in music.

Seurat's theories can be summarized as follows: The emotion of gaiety can be achieved by the domination of luminous hues, by the predominance of warm colours, and by the use of lines directed upward. Calm is achieved through an equivalence/balance of the use of the light and the dark, by the balance of warm and cold colours, and by lines that are horizontal. Sadness is achieved by using dark and cold colours and by lines pointing downward.

Good morning everyone and happy Sunday!

Bama, according to the BBC, "a significant partial solar eclipse will be visible across the UK on August 12, 2026, with over 90% obscuration in Scotland and around 80-90% elsewhere between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm BST. While not total, it will be the most significant solar eclipse visible from the UK until 2090. " The total eclipse will pass over the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, northern Spain and the extreme northeastern part of Portugal. I'm.going to admit that somehow I was unaware of this phenomenon. although I'm sure there will be aot of press coverage nearer the time!

Helia, WTG getting everything for your Europe trip booked! A DH who now has peace of mind is worth delaying the taxes for a couple.of days IMHO.

Thanks for the start, kittykatt ! Sorry to read about the lady looking for a puppy and being swindled. Georges Seurat is the kind of painter everyone hears about in an art class at some point in school, in France. So easy to have kids paint "the way Seurat did", and since it takes a long time to paint in dots, the teachers get some quiet time in the classroom for awhile

Helia if it's not too late for travel advice, yes Avignon is a nice city. A slight preference for Arles, nearby - a bit smaller, painting museums - with Dutch painters lol as van Gogh lived in Arles for many years ! Prepare for possible very hot weather in the summer. Yes, TGV tickets sell fast, they just opened reservations for the summer, people order them during weekends, so you have to hurry to get the best prices.

trissie yes creole is a funny version of French. There are other "simplified and odd" version of French that are lesser known. (Look into "Gallo" language in Brittany if you have time, it's misshaped and deliciously out-dated French.) This wikipedia page compares a short text in French, Norman, Gallo and other old languages of France. Interestingly, reading aloud the Norman translation reminded me of the Quebecois accent - not sure Doggedly would agree, though. It's more like a subjective impression.

/ Rugby talk :
Rugby was great but lots of stress until the last seconds. France had to finish the game with an advance over England in order to win the Six Nation tournament, otherwise Ireland would be the winner - there are five games for each nation, and you add up the scores in the end. So, yesterday night, England proved a very strong and worthy adversary as opposed to their recent performances, and... well it was sometimes hard to breathe. But delightful for France as they managed to score one more point than England at litterally the last second. I can only guess how the Irish felt watching the game and not being able to do anything about the outcome.

Today is cold and more or less bright. The grass is all frozen. We have local elections today, everywhere in France (municipal elections). I need to make sure which list I vote for, there are three, and they don't exactly write their political 'thought's on the ballot, so you need to read what their plans are for the next 6 years and how they make their choices. There may be large cities won by the far-right RN, thanks to Macron's stupid actions those last few years - "revenge voting", sort of.

Good morning, FFB, and congratulations to France! I dont watch sport, but I'd sort of guessed France had won, as DH wasn't watching the match on catch-up when I went to bed!!!

Yes, I remember the summer heat in Provence - my Auntie's house was paid ted white with a tiled roof, and had shutters and tiled floors, which were deliciously cool to walk on. And everyone had a siesta in the middle.of the day, and came back to life for the evening when it was cooler. (I'm not sure if that is still a thing?)I remember the heat as being a dry heat (not humid) but that there was a wind called the Mistral (sp?) which often made the adults a bit grumpy.for some reason! I also remember the large veranda/patio with broad steps down to the garden, which was full of Mediterranean and subtropical plants, as well as some roses, and my aunt's cat, Pacsha, wandering through it all. I also remember he spend the long drive down from Versailles to Provence riding wrapped across my uncle's shoulders and neck as he drove! Terribly dangerous of course, but no one seemed to mind.at the time.

Of course, I was only there for holidays, so only remember the idyllic side!

kittykatt your description is delicious, you must have spent very nice times there ! Yes, dry heat, barely enjoyable between noon and 3pm, so if people can nap, it's the best. Have a good time at church !

helia if you've been to Spain, the best rhythm for summers in Provence is the Spanish lifestyle : a middle of the day break from noon to 3pm or sometimes 4pm before shops open again, and a very long evening and night after that, evening meal not before 8pm. Try and find museums or indoors activities that start around noon or 1pm. You will enjoy outdoors sightseeing more after 4 or 5pm. Well, unless you have non-typical weather.

Had bfast with MrNG deliberating over who to vote for, in our small city are 2 left-wing lists and one right-wing list. But if you look closely at their leaflets there is actually one center-oriented, Macron-oriented list among them so very conservative center. Municipal-wannabe lists don't write which political party they are close to, so you have to investigate...

Congratulations to the French, Frenchie! Good luck selecting somebody who will do the right things by the people! It's been proved lately that elections are indeed VERY important. And I will look into the gallo language - being a polyglot means I enjoy little language jokes and such. I actually re-read (well re-listened to) Leo Rosten's The Education of H*Y*M*A*N K*A*P*L*A*N recently, and while I was no longer able to laugh at the students' lack of grasp of the language (kinda hard to feel disdain for somebody who escaped the Ukrainian Holodomor, as is the case of Mr. Kaplan, if you piece the clues together, which of course I had no way of doing when I read it in my early teens, if only for the fact that Holodomor was still a state secret), I very much appreciated the way the translator (and I am sure Mr. Rosten in the first place) weaved together the influence of the original students's languages on the their grasp of English (i.e. Czech in the translation). I wonder whether helia ever read that book? I am sure she would love it too!
kittykatt, solar eclipses are fun! I was lucky to experience an almost full (98%) eclipse back in 1999 and it was quite something. Especially the way the full summer heat suddenly turning into shivering cold. I did not expect that!

So, Sunday. I had the sleep in that didn't happen yesterday, but now I need to get going. Wanted to make a turkey drumstick roast in the slow cooker overnight for lunch, but the thing is too big even for my large slow cooker, so into the oven it went this morning. Well, I will know better next time!
Day will be spend on garden and homework and general getting ready for next week. It's gonna be a crazy one, I fear

We watched a solar eclips 2 years ago. It was impressive. Everything became very quiet. The birds stopped singing... It got pretty dark.
