The Battle.of Fulford took place on n the 20th September 1066, when Harold Hardrada's Viking army, accompanied by Tostig's rebels, marched north towards York. The fleet had been left under a strong guard at Riccall, 10 miles to the south of the city. Edwin and Morcar, the Ealdormen of Mercia and Northumbria, had probably marshalled substantial forced from across the North. Their English army marched southward out of the York to challenge the invaders. A mile and a half south of the city walls they seem to have taken up a strong defensive position across the main road at a ford immediately to the south of the village of Gate Fulford.
The battle of Fulford is often treated as a minor battle of no great significance. This is far from the truth, for it must have resulted in substantial losses for the northern English army. Had Edwin and Morcar known that Harold was marching north with a large army then they could probably have waited behind the defences of York until he arrived. As a result, the final victory over the Vikings might have been far more cheaply won by a stronger army. As it was the combined losses at Fulford and Stamford Bridge must have severely weakened Harold’s army and contributed significantly to its destruction at Hastings.

Happy Good Friday, to all who celebrate.
Thank you for starting us off, Kittykatt. The board is acting up for me too. All the more impressive that you managed to start us off for the day.
I had a good day. I had a good long phone visit with my db. I think that we talked for about four hours. After that, I did not launch into productivity, but just coasted along. I did get Germane looked after and got the dw set up and run, and watered the plants. And that will do for now.

I'm glad you had a good phone visit with your DBro, Dogged, and that Germane is happy - you've definitely got the right priorities in life!

Sleep well!

I'm up, Freddie has had his walk and everyone has been fed. MJ has texted to say he should be here around 10.15 am, so I've tidied up downstairs and run the hoover round, and I've even found the original paperwork (dating back 30 years!) for the windows. It does give the original BS standard numbers for the glass, but I suspect they've been superseded over the years, so really, any safety glass that meets current regulations will be fine.

MJ has been, measured the door several times, and gone again. He *thinks* he'll be able to do the job, but he's nervous about ordering glass as he's never done it before. I said that any reputable company should be able to guide him through the process. Apparently the fitting is relatively straightforward. I'll just wait and see what he decides. If he feels he can't do it, I have a plan B, so all is not lost.
DH has made fish pie for supper tomorrow, which is currently cooling on the oven (too warm still to go in the fridge,.and we can't leave it out unprotected on the worktop, as it would rapidly become a fishless pie, which may well be a culinary novelty, but not one I want to sample!
