Fiordland National Park is a national park in the south-west corner of South Island of New Zealand. It is the largest of the 13 national parks in New Zealand, with an area covering 12,607 km2 (4,868 sq mi), and a major part of the Te Wāhipounamu a UNESCO World Heritage Site established in 1990. The park is administered by the Department of Conservation (DOC). The southern ranges of the Southern Alps cover most of Fiordland National Park, combined with the deep glacier-carved valleys.

Fiordland National Park contains the largest area of unmodified vegetation in New Zealand. The dense forests, often clinging to steep valley sides, comprise mostly silver beech and mountain beech, but also podocarps. A large variety of shrubs and ferns, often dominated by crown fern, make up a rich understory of plants, with the forest floor covered in mosses and liverworts. The abundant vegetation is supported by the high rainfall, but continues to be damaged by introduced species such as red deer and possum.

The park is also a significant refuge for many threatened native animals, including dolphins, bats, reptiles, insects, and birds. Among the birds are several endangered species endemic to New Zealand, such as the takahē, mōhua (Yellowhead), and the critically endangered kākāpō, the only flightless parrot in the world. The vulnerable Fiordland crested penguin and southern brown kiwi are also almost exclusively found within the park.

The special nature of the Fiordland area for conservation was recognised in the late 1890s by Richard Henry, pioneering the transfer of threatened species such as kākāpō and kiwi to islands in Dusky Sound. Conservation work and management of endangered species continues via many programmes by the Department of Conservation. The Takahē Recovery Programme ensures the survival of the last wild population of takahē. This unique bird, the largest living member of the rail family, was once thought to be extinct. After the rediscovery of the takahē in the Murchison Mountains in 1948, a special area of 500 square kilometres (190 sq mi) was set aside in Fiordland National Park for its conservation, and the population reached 300 birds in 2016. Although the National Park comprises 15% of New Zealand's conservation estate, it receives less than 1% of the Department of Conservation's pest-control budget.

Dogged, I hope your knee starts cooperating again quickly. Good to hear Germane is eating again. I'm not very familiar with Linux, except it makes me think of penguins for some reason - is / was a penguin in the logo? And I remember reading that it tends not to get the usual computer viruses, so together with improved cooperation, it sounds like a Good Thing.

Today is a sunny start, and I think it's supposed to be dry today, although still chilly. So I really need to work in my garden today, as I can't guarantee tomorrow will also be dry. I must email the vet this morning, but the rest of the "should dos" can wait if necessary. (They've waited so long already, another day won't hurt! ) I'm hoping to hear from MJ and from J the painter today about when they hope to come and do their respective jobs. This is another reason for working on my front garden, as I want it to look more under control before J arrives.

Well, all I managed this week was to start a thread in the morning and then disappear

It's just been one of those weeks. DH's been gone since Wednesday morning and work was extra busy. Good thing is - we currently have an ongoing conduct review carried out by the national regulator (think Bank of England or similar institution tasked with overseeing financial markets) and I am the team lead on our side. I've been getting high praise from the audit team for my work and my area of responsibility with the company. That means I am getting white-listed for holding high-level positions within financial institutions (to ensure the stability and proper conduct of companies like banks, insurance companies or large-scale trading and investment companies, their management and key personnel not only needs to be qualified, but has to be pre-approved by national regulator). So, my extra work is definitely worth it, even if it's not exactly convenient right now.

But it's finally Friday, which means I am working from home and I will get a chance to catch up on things at home. DS and DBD have a trip with the scouts tomorrow, so no sleep in on Saturday. Maybe Sunday, but I did want to go to church, so we shall see. Plan for the day - low key work (I've clocked in enough overtime to feel slacking is justified today), clean the house, and if the weather holds, head to the garden. If not, the attic or the garage!

You're bright about the weather here. We do, if course, get long- ish spells of dry settled weather, but I don't think this is going to be one of them. So I need to "seize the day". I've emailed the vet, so that's the "must do" out of the way for today. I'm now debating where to start - back or front. I'll see which has dried out the.most after yesterday's rain, and start there.

Having coffee in my garden on the patio, as it's in the sun and out of the wind. I think I'll tackle the front garden after lunch. Everything should have dried out by then, and I'm also strategically placed, as someone is supposed to be collecting the foot rest I listed on Nextdoor later today.
