Alma Woodsey Thomas (September 22, 1891 – February 24, 1978) was an American artist and art teacher who lived and worked in Washington, D.C., and is now recognized as a major American painter of the 20th century. She is the first African-American woman to be included in the White House's permanent art collection. Thomas is best known for the "exuberant", colorful, abstract paintings that she created after she retired from a 35-year career teaching art at Washington's Shaw Junior High School.

Thomas, who is often considered a member of the Washington Color School art movement but alternatively classified by some as an Expressionist and/or Black Abstractionist, earned her teaching degree from University of the District of Columbia (known as Miner Normal School at the time). She was the first graduate of Howard University's art department, and maintained connections to that university through her life. She achieved success as an African-American female artist despite the segregation and prejudice of her time.

Thomas's reputation has continued to grow since her death. Her paintings are displayed in notable museums and collections and have been the subject of several books and solo museum exhibitions. The Smithsonian American Art Museum maintains the world's largest public collection of her work. In 2021, a museum sold Thomas's painting Alma's Flower Garden in a private transaction for $2.8 million.

I have a funeral to attend today (scattering of ashes of my grandmother who died last fall - apparently you can only scatter ashes in spring and summer, but not after October 1), so I have a day off work. DS is going with me, DH is at work and the girls are at school. There will be a family lunch, which I am not really looking forward to (I am not close with this part of the family, for variety of reasons), but we should be home pretty early so I hope to get lots done today.

Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. I'm sorry about the funeral - I've never heard about ash scattering being restricted by season before - is it a traditional custom? I hope the lunch is at least bearable, and DS is a support.

I'm up - it's going to be another hot day. Main items - Freddie's appointment (fortunately early and the vets have A/C - for the animals' benefit! ) and I must message L about the roof. It's a beautiful morning, so if I get home early enough, I'll go for my walk then.

I'm back home again. Freddie was appallingly badly behaved, hissed and spat at everyone in the waiting room, swore at the vet when he came to usher us into our appointment, and then tried to attack the vet with teeth and claws bared when he took the blanket off his cage. Fortunately the manufacturer of his cage anticipated this, and the bars of the cage are *very* close together in that area, so nothing can get out and cause damage!!!

I've messaged L, the roofer (message has been delivered but he hasn't read it yet - I expect he's very busy ATM, working on someone else's roof!) and I managed to attach the video J made and the photos I've taken.

I've also taken Fred for his walk. We're well past the 8 am RSPCA deadline, but most of the way we went was in the shade, and the bits in the sun were still cool to my bare hand, so I guessed they'd be fine for Fred's paws.

Next up, breakfast for me, then a little session in my front garden, which is still in the shade.

Sorry about the funeral and uncomfortable fam. situations... I had to look up scattering of ashes - it IS apparently legal here.

Kittykatt - Freddie probably needed that walk after the ordeal at the vet. (Perhaps, you needed a little something as well?)
