April 2025 - Sort, Tidy, Declutter!

Post by Harriet »

One quarter of 2025 is past but 3 more lie ahead! Who will be winning by 2026 - you or the clutter?

How are you moving through the clutter in your lovely home? Are you picking up and putting away, or are you passing it by? :) Be brave! It only takes a little time a day to make big changes!

You'd be surprised at how much you can accomplish in fifteen minutes of focused work, and that does tend to accumulate quickly as the days and weeks pass.

Plus, you get the enormous added benefit of staying close to your work, so that your comfort with it grows, it begins to appear less demanding and menacing, and your mind continues to chew on the problems even as you are occupied with other things.

Large, ambitious projects can induce procrastination and guilt. By committing to a small amount of work each day, with absolutely no pressure to do more than the minimum, steady progress can be made. - Andrew Utter

HRH's office has been the focus recently. It looks really good right now with clear surfaces and some extra space freed up. Now he is drawing and making notes for a new bookcase for it that he would build himself. I'm glad he has found something that interests him so much.

I need to continue my work upstairs in my room. I did a ton of decluttering but haven't followed through on trying to sell any of it, or give it away. Is it worth my time to try to sell? The attraction is that it would go to someone who would want it.

Dh brought in a batter powered milk frother while I was away. Apparently he purchased it somewhere, doesn't remember, and found it floating around in a box of stuff from his car. It went into the donate box. I used to have one, it was mechanical and the kids enjoyed frothing for hot chocolate but now, it's not worth the space it takes up.

I resent my dh's acquisition tendencies. I finally convinced him that something has to go out of the house if he brings a new one in, like shoes, for instance. He has 32 pairs of shoes - more than I own certainly. I found another recently that is overflow, doesn't fit on the shelves in our closet. Same for clothes - he has more than I do and is constantly purchasing more. That's in addition to all the wine here (his last collectible) and now bourbon.

Yes, I have a collection of genealogy/history books, and I have a lot of stamping supplies too. But i haven't moved on from them.

Anyway, I do need to keep paring down upstairs. Boxing things up isn't enough....

This coming week I am focusing on the master bedroom and my closet- I did about half of going through my clothes and donated a lot last week.

I am doing a 31 day spring cleaning challenge (which I am behind on), but this week I am cleaning all the windows in the house and dusting walls and ceilings.

A while back I made a pile of clothes for my kids to try on; we did tops and pants tonight and then sorted them either to put away or to donate. Tomorrow I will try to get them to try on dresses.

My bedroom is an ongoing project, dealing with too much "stuff". It's much better than it was, but my rule of thumb is that if needed items can't be accessed easily, then there are too many!

I have three wicker baskets that sit on top of my wardrobe and yesterday I went through them, so one now holds spare kitchen roll,.one spare toilet rolls (I have a smaller basket in the bathroom that holds 2-3 rolls, so convenient and enough for immediate needs, but I like to have plenty in stock!), and the third holds the boxes of tissues that DH likes to accumulate, and also potential gifts for my Christmas shoebox. (I buy most of my toiletries, moisturiser etc online, and often receive a "free gift". It's not usually something I would use, but would make a very nice addition fory shoebox, so I just pop it in the wicker basket for now. Come November, when we pack the shoe boxes, I usually have a good collection!)

As I'm currently switching from winter to summer clothes, it's also time to assess my winter "collection", as especially what hasn't been worn. Is there a good reason for this? (Some things I only wear when it's *really* cold and we had a relatively mild winter), or do they no longer fit properly, or simply don't "feel" right? I did a big wardrobe declutter last autumn, but it's always going to be a work in progress as I get new things and other things wear out. Also, IMHO, I think I still have too many clothes!

So, I have three aims: to carry on doing g seemingly "random" decluttering as I "see" things that are out of place / untidy/ overflowing as they're stuffed too full, to go through my winter clothes that I haven't worn, and decide their fate, and also to reduce the "surplus" of all my clothes, so the wardrobe isn't so full, and things don't get crushed in there, and I just keep things that I really love.

Yesterday when I was folding laundry I decluttered a t shirt that doesn't fit properly, and a pair of socks I've also decluttered a couple of pairs of trainers that somehow cause my hip to hurt :?: (I know its the trainers and not my orthotics wearing, as my orthotics are still quite new, and I'm ok wearing different styles of trainers and my shoes. I think these were a case of one size being too small and the size up being too large. ) They're only "lightly used", so I'll out them in the donations bags ready to walk over to the charity bank when it's full.

That's better. I just made better use of my drawers. My towels drawer was too tight and lids were in too big space.

I tossed a few lids with no containers. Cleaned out those drawers. Organized my plastic wrap drawer too.

Oh and a couple of excess things that went with dd. Her bass guitar. The amp was sitting in the hallway since I emptied ds26 room. Plus an extra litter box that we don't need. She can use those. So my hallway lost a few invisible things too.

There's lots of clutter in this house. Some of it feels slightly invisible. Just always been there. I do want to gradually get rid of stuff.
