Re: Alan Turing Thursday
Alan Mathison Turing (1912–1954) was an English mathematician and computer scientist. He was highly influential in the development of computers. His Turing machine, which he invented in 1936, demonstrated how computers could work, and is now considered the model on which modern computers are based.
During World War II (1939–45), Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park—Britain's code-breaking centre. He devised a number of techniques for breaking German codes, working with, and improving on, electro-mechanical machines called bombes to decipher intercepted secret messages that had been encoded by the Enigma machines used by the Germans. This enabled the Allies to defeat Nazi Germany in several crucial battles. Knowledge of the enemy's plans and movements was key to the Allies' success in winning the war.
After the war, Turing concentrated on developing a machine that could process information in a logical way, and at high speed. At the National Physical Laboratory he made the first designs for a stored-program digital computer: the Automatic Computing Machine (ACE). A prototype was built in 1950 after he had left the laboratory.

Re: Alan Turing Thursday
Good morning, everyone, and happy Thursday!
I never made it back here yesterday, but DH has a wonderful time at the steam railway.
And came back with another list of kit to obtain!
I can't remember everything he did, but he did clip tickets and sweep out a carriage (!!) (I asked him if he knew which end of the broom to use!
). And he got to ride on the footplate several times.
Laura, DH is hoping to retire in the next few months, and one of the things he has planned to do is volunteer 1 day a week at the heritage steam railway. Apparently he's is going to be trained to be a ticket collector /inspector and one of the things we have to find is his own ticket punching machine.
Dogged, I haven't mentioned the traditional tin sandwich box, and neither has he. I would rather he have something easy to clean, but I might get him a traditional one for "special occasions" for Christmas.
I need to make a list of the things he needs that will require my input. The shirt was a huge success - it fitted nicely, and I'm happy with the quality. He is happy with the feeling and that he can move around in it. A bonus is that the "placket" where the buttons go is nice and wide, so it closes nicely, so he looks smart, and he doesn't look as if he's bursting out of his shirt like Tom Kitten!
So he said he wants another one. (I shall actually get him two more, so it's a case of, "One on, one off and one in the wash!
)
This needs to be quick as I need to get moving. Have a good day everyone!

Re: Alan Turing Thursday
Thanks for the start kittykatt. It's good to know about some of these MEN who have made a difference in our lives!
Lauralind, I made some canning suggestions in Wednesday's thread.
I'm way behind... But after Monday's fiasco of all errands not working out, I finally did get the car washed and the book renewed, both on Wednesday.
And I picked up some flowers for Mother, to deliver them Thursday for her 79 wedding anniversary. A couple days ago she was surprised that I didn't attend her wedding
. I did inform her that I wasn't born yet!
Tonight I stayed up, husked 5 ears of corn, cooked them, cut off the kernels, and have them in the freezer, with salt, butter, and just a wee bit of sugar. I should have done it 3 days ago, but I have had the corn in the fridge, and I have jsut not had the time. I'll see how it tastes come winter.
Tuesday I power washed my back steps. Today I went outside a few times just to look at them - they look so nice now that they are clean!
It's bedtime here, so I better say good night, and head there. I hope I wake up with energy to do laundry before goin g to see mother.

Re: Alan Turing Thursday
Gma, that was great advice for Lauralind on how to save those jars of syrup that didn't seal properly.
I'll bet that corn will taste like summer when you have it this winter.
Thank you for the start, Kittykatt, and for the information on Alan Turing. His is such a sad story, after all that he had done for his country, to be treated as he was.
I have the satisfaction of a cart piled high with donations for the dog rescue. I'm not so happy with myself for putting off washing my hair until now, but I'll have to do it before I go to bed because I know that I won't want to do it when I get up. And I need to be up and dressed when the lady from the dog rescue arrives to pick up my donations.
Thursday
Washed the recycling bin and put it on the handtruck to donate
Gathered the dog food and pee pads to donate and put them on the handtruck
Bagged the bin of donations and put it on the handtruck
Bagged laundry detergent and put it on the hand truck
Wiped Germane’s eyes out
Apoquel for Germane

Re: Alan Turing Thursday
Yay for all that progress, gma, and good night!
so does DH know which end of the broom to use, kittykatt?
Dogged, you are really treating that decluttering seriously!
Alan Turing is such a fascinating figure... I've actually recently read a couple books on Bletchley Park! It's such a loss that he was driven to suicide at such a young age due to persecution for his homosexuality (it was illegal at that time in Britain, so once he was made out, he was stripped of all his security clearances and given a choice of either imprisonment or chemical castration), as he had so much potential.
Working from home. House is a disaster, and I need to get groceries, and I am so behind on work (given I have today and then Mon+Tue and then I leave for the rest of the week). I also have a sore throat and a cold sore, and am really hoping it won't get worse, it would be really annoying!

Re: Alan Turing Thursday
Sleep well, Dogged! WTG with all the decluttering of dog supplies.
Good morning, Trissie! After yesterday's training, DH now knows which end of the broom to use! (And also how to draw it carefully without raising the dust) I looked on the list of responsibilities he has been given, and it also includes cleaning windows, cleaning the brass work and cleaning the toilets, which will also be new experiences for him. I'm assuming he will be given full instruction and training!!!
Gma, that sweetcorn sounds delicious!
I'm sure it will remind you of summer when you take it out of the freezer. WTG on the back steps!
I'm off to church now, as I have to battle through the roadworks, and I'm hoping to be able to hoover the car before church and maybe run a couple of errands.

Re: Alan Turing Thursday
Thanks for the interesting start, trissie. I do know a little about Turing, and the end of his story is a sad one. Ds did a project on him in middle school. I also saw The Imitation Game, though I don't know how accurate it was.
How nice to have fresh corn prepped and stocked away in your freezer, Gma! LOL at not attending your mom's wedding!
I think it's great that dh is volunteering at the steam railway, Kitty! It sounds like he's going to get some practice cleaning. Have a good morning at church!
WTG getting your hair washed, Doggedly. You'll be lovely when you greet the woman from the dog rescue. I imagine it will feel good to get those doggy items out of your home, especially since they'll be blessing rescue dogs.
Last night, I got the vocabulary journal figured out and set up as well as clean sheets on the bed. We tried the new topper on the bed last night -- I'm not sure why dh got a new one. It is fine. I can't tell much difference, but dh said he didn't like it -- or maybe it was OK. He's a little like the princess and the pea. LOL!
Today is sunny with a high of 83*F.
After looking at various weather websites with dh, he and dd27 have decided to go backpacking after all. It looks like the forecast rainfall has decreased. They'll have good raincoats with them.
Today, I teach 11-1 and then I work out with my trainer 2-3. I still need to get to Kroger, so I think I'll go straight from the gym. Progress on the brain dump and maybe cleaning another shelf in the fridge would be good. I'm eating leftovers for dinner.
Main Goals for Today

2. 11-1 Payroll: Teach IR D3
3. 2-3 Work out with AS

Re: Alan Turing Thursday
Thanks for the start and interesting read, kittykatt. Good luck to dh on learning new skills.
Dogged, the potato adventure needs a catchy title and I’m in. Not what I expected to read this early lol. How kind to donate to the shelter. Ours are terribly overcrowded and appreciate any kind gesture.
Laura, sorry the jam didn’t cooperate but the syrup sounds delicious as well.
Trissie, feel better. Thanks for the reminder on Turing so I didn’t have to go on a deep dive of distraction.
Gma, you’re so involved with your dmom, she feels like you’ve always been there. That must feel nice. Future you will appreciate the corn.
Helia, lol at dh and the mattress cover. Hope the bad weather dissipates before it has a chance to spoil the trip.
Not much going on here but it’s early still.
♥ Wake each day expecting good things to happen! ♥

Re: Alan Turing Thursday
Morning all. Gma thanks for the tips. Experimenting without pectin I have tried before and it just doesn't thicken. Ds really wanted to try it. Oh well. I am tempted to add some cornstarch. The syrup was only 2 jars and something tells me they won't last long. The other I'm probably going to have to do like you said and reboil it.
I slept longer than usual this morning. Should look at the schedule but I gotta get up soon to shower if I go at 8.
