The Planets, Op. 32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1917. In the last movement the orchestra is joined by a wordless female chorus. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System.

Imogen Holst, the composer's daughter, wrote that her father had difficulty with large-scale orchestral structures such as symphonies, and the idea of a suite with a separate character for each movement was an inspiration to him. Holst described The Planets as "a series of mood pictures", acting as "foils to one another", with "very little contrast in any one of them".

The first movement to be written was Mars in mid-1914, followed by Venus and Jupiter in the latter part of the year, Saturn and Uranus in mid-1915, Neptune later in 1915 and Mercury in early 1916. Holst completed the orchestration during 1917.[

The premiere of The Planets was at the Queen's Hall, London, on 29 September 1918, conducted by Holst's friend Adrian Boult before an invited audience of about 250 people. Three concerts at which movements from the suite were played were given in 1919 and early 1920. The first complete performance at a public concert was given at the Queen's Hall on 15 November 1920 by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Albert Coates.

The innovative nature of Holst's music caused some initial hostility among a minority of critics, but the suite quickly became and has remained popular, influential and widely performed. The composer conducted two recordings of the work, and it has been recorded at least 80 times subsequently by conductors, choirs and orchestras from the UK and internationally.

Oh, I've never heard of a planet suit, kittykatt, really every day means learning something new!

We have four hours before we need to leave. The kids' stuff is packed, but I need to prepare food, and we'll need to reload the car, as we are taking some of the scouts' stuff and also driving two other kids and their stuff and the van will be FULL! I mean, it's a van, but it's the shortest 9 person combination, so the trunk is not that big.

TaDas
- up and dressed to shoes
- breakfast and coffee
- internet time
- wake up twins who need to wash their hair

ToDos
- bake banana muffins
- ready rest of food (toasts, fruit slices, etc)
- print camp paperwork and ready everybody's envelopes

Good morning, Trissie! You have a busy day ahead of you, but you sound very well organised!

In answer to your question< I have 28 roses, including the ones in large pots and my climbing rose. Too many really! That's probably why there isn't much room for anything else:lol: (But a couple haven't done well this year for the second year running, so may be going on their way in the autumn)

I never made it back here yesterday, but I did finish spraying the roses, cut the grass and watered the pots And had a long chat with Dnextdoorneighbour C, and also managed to list the last two boxes of stuff on eBay. I still need to wrap the contents and label so we know what's in each box before they can go down to the garage, but that's a job of today. It will be nice to have that little project completed.

Today , DH is going out with his friends. I need to catch up on the household jobs I didn't do yesterday (in mitigation, the spare room /office faces west, so by the time DH had finally vacated there yesterday, we'd had a cup of tea together, and he'd left for choir practice it was very hot in there. So it made sense to do on the back garden, which by then was pleasantly cool :D )

I'm hoping the spare room will have cooled down a bit overnight, so my plans for today are to do housework, fold yesterday's laundry dry and spend aome.time in my front garden while that's in the shade this morning, sort out lunch for tomorrow.amd.bake during the heat of the day as the kitchen will still be in the shade then, and go for my walk and do something in in my back garden when it's cooler. At least, that's the plan! Plans, of course, are always subjectt.to change

Kittykatt, thanks for the start. We have rain alternating with sun. 28 roses seems like a lot.

trissie, good luck making everything ready, and good luck once you're there too.

Another weekend home. At paryoll boss is supposed to have left yesterday for her own vacation, so the two weeks ahead should be stress-free or almost. The Tour de France (Women) is passing near our city today so we hope to see the cyclists. This morning we harvested more than 10 kgs of plums, and there are more to come  :) . We offered baskets of plums to two sets of neighbours, the other ones were away or are on vacation, we will try our luck this afternoon again. Or we are stuck with way too much plums. We don't have enough glass jars for that quantity of jam / preserves - and there is maybe twice as much still on the tree, to harvest during the week or next weekend probably ?

TADAs
slow morning
lol in, then out
harvested many kgs of plums
prepared glass jars, made calculations, also calculated how much sugar we need
offered plums to neighbours
made quick lunch and ate and cleanedup
and also made plum smoothis but it needs lots of sugar or the kids won't drink it (plums are acidic)

TODO
not sure yet...
House stuff, make a batch of payroll meals (using some plums??)
Go to [not far away] to see the Tour de France / Women
pizza for dinner
and family movie night

Hello, FFB - so glad you should have few weeks at work without the stress from the boss. I envy you all those delicious plums! A thought about the plums - could you cook them at a slow simmer (the opposite of making jam!) in a big pan with a little water and some sugar and then portion and freeze when cool enough? They could then be used in crumble, cobblers, or even just as stewed plums with some ice cream. Freezing them would take the pressure off you so you don't feel so overwhelmed.

The sun has come out, but I'm sticking to my original plan, so I'm now in the kitchen, planning to much for tomorrow.
