Maumbury Rings is a Neolithic henge located in the south of Dorchester town in Dorset, England. It is a large circular earthwork, 85 metres in diameter, with a single bank and internal ditch and an entrance to the north east. The ditch was created by digging a series of funnel-shaped shafts, each 10 metres deep, which were so closely positioned as to create a continuous trench. Human and deer skull fragments were found in the ditch fill when it was excavated in the early 20th century.

2,500 years after construction, during the Roman occupation, the site was adapted as an amphitheatre for the use of the citizens of the nearby Roman town of Durnovaria (Dorchester). The entrance was retained and an inner enclosure built in the south west interpreted as being for the use of the performers. The inside of the henge was lowered, with the material produced piled onto the banks.

During the Civil War the site was again reused as an artillery fort guarding the southern approach to Dorchester. The site as it exists today is a product of the remodelling during this era - the most significant modification was the large ramp opposite the entrance.

Its amphitheatre role was briefly revived in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, as a place of public execution. In 1685, at the close of the Monmouth Rebellion, Judge Jeffreys ordered eighty of the rebels to be executed here. In 1705 Mary Channing, a nineteen year old woman found guilty of poisoning her husband, was executed by strangulation and burning at the Rings. Thomas Hardy used this event in his poem The Mock Wife, and recorded some details of his research into the event in his personal writings.

The monument is now a public open space, and used for open-air concerts, festivals and re-enactments.

Good morning, everyone, and happy Monday!

Dogged, no bracelet for me (yet) in everyday life, but I'm sure I would be given one in a hospital situation. It's in my notes, and I was trained as a small child to say I was allergic to penicillin. Interestingly, almost half the population claimed to be "allergic", so theyve been quizzing people about their symptoms, as most are apparently an "intolerance" or just common side effects. When I told the NP that I didn't personally remember what had happened when I was given penicillin as I was very small, but I'd been told I got a rash (very common and they don't bother too much unless it's bad) but that my throat also swelled up, she really did sit up and rake notice! And decided it was a genuine allergy and we certainly weren't going to risk it again! Interestingly, I can eat blue cheese without any problems, but I don't actually like it that much.

Today is a bank holiday, so DH is home. I forgot to mention yesterday that he is really pleased with his new lunchbox for when he goes to work on the steam trains! ( I'm going to see if I can get him an old fashioned tin one for Christmas, but this is probably more practical. :D ) For me, I think it will be gardening, a walk and some housework (the latter shouldn't be too bad, as DH has been away and I've kept every tidy! )

Thanks for the start kittykatt. Enjoy your day with DH home and I hope it doesn't stop you from being productive if you want to be.

As for me I made this long list of to-dos before going back to work (tomorrow) and kids going back to school (next Monday) and I feel overwhelmed. Not that many difficult things though, but I tend to worry a lot about things lately and what could happen and what if - maybe perimenopause related anxiety - so, not fun. The only way out is to get things done. I still have today off so a great opportunity to get things done, if DKids will allow, but I need it to be relaxing as well... Yesterday was productive but not as much as I had hoped. And more items added to the list.

Gma I love to read to my kids too, but I also like to be productive with my Sunday afternoons. DS7 really enjoys sitting with a parent who reads to him but he will choose any book, sometimes books we have read a few times, the ones lying around for instance. I feel an obligation to read a bit to him, in my mind, it's what moms are for - but we have piles of books in the LR so this can last for hours, and I feel guilty when I say we stop.

TADAs
email deletion (in bed) and tab bookmarking-closing (in bed)
opened blinds
read news in bed

TODO now (8.30am)
get out of bed, bfast
school stationery to sort and label for each kid
self-care routine
drive to gas station to check tire pressure (the stressful warning light was on, yesterday)
while I'm there, go in person to ophtalmologist place for an appt
... tbc

Good morning, FFB! I can understand being overwhelmed by the lists. Can Mr NG take some of the pressure off you and do some of the kid related tasks?

I've managed to do my physio exercises, with interruptions from Matilda (nibbling my ankles, which makes holding a plank difficult, but she's forgiven because she's so sweet!) and DH (wanting g to know where the liquid soap in the bathroom was -in its usual place! He then walks off when I'm half way through telling gim  )

It's a beautiful sunny day, so I want to get out in the garden before it gets too hot. I shall ask DH if he can sort out that crate of his "stuff" I. The office/ spare room today. I'm not optimistic about this, but I can always ask! And, if course, the garage still needs more doing to it... maybe that's something I can do a bit at a time when he's at work? :D

So, next, shower and dress, take Fred out for his walk, and breakfast!

☀️Good morning!

What an interesting title, kittykatt. It is trying to send me down a rabbit hole of research but I must resist. I’m glad the lunchbox was a hit. Hope the roof work can hold off. I had a wedge salad the other day with blue cheese and it was really good, maybe I can recreate it tonight for supper.

Frenchflybebe, your thoughts aren’t uncommon among moms. Good luck balancing all of the things.

LAnn, you’ve reminded me to get back into printing copies of photos I want to keep.

Dh has gone to work, I’m going to ease slowly into my work day as time goes on…

Bama, thanks for comforting me. I know there are many moms out here who can validate my feelings anytime. And other ladies who aren't moms, of course. . I remember you sharing about your DDs and seeing them grow and go to high school / collegeSo you're an empty-nester now, right ?

L.Ann glad to know Little Bit will be back to school soon. You have a lot on your hands with her and your DD home. I thought about you yesterday when reading this article about grandparents helping with kids and sometimes not wanting to.

kittykatt enjoy the sunny day ! I hope we can have beautiful days far into September. better for the garden and the mood. Yes, MrNG is helping a lot. He is taking them for their haircuts this afternoon (in a few minutes), and he will help when shopping for clothes.

Managed to get things done this morning, slowly, but done. Kids are going to have their hair cut, with MrNG, so the house will be quiet for at least 40 minutes, which is fantastic :D MrNG just said : "we're leaving, you can do whatever you want"- and he added with a smile : "you can also do nothing".
I might do a bit of both.

TADAs
get out of bed, bfast, very quick self-spiff
drive to gas station to check tire pressure (the stressful warning light was on, yesterday) : OK, nothing serious
go in person to ophtalmologist place for an appt : at last, appt made, for September, and got an appt for the kids in February (both on the same day which is difficult) - yay
made lunch, ate, mostly cleaned up

TODO now
enjoy quiet house for 40 minutes
school stationery to sort and label for each kid
make list of clothes needed for each kid, see what we have, prepare shopping list
general cleaning and organising ?
camping seats to clean
sweep patio
... tbc

Good morning North American SHEs! 🌅 Good afternoon UK and European SHEs! Does that leave anyone out?

L Ann, I didn't know you were allergic to penicillin.
Kitty, I'm so happy dh likes his new lunch box! I'd been wondering. It's the bento box one, right?
Bama, I'm easing into my day too. I developed the habit of slow mornings during covid. I love blue cheese dressing!!
I remember that tension when the kids were young, FFB, wanting to read/ play with them but finding their needs and desires unending and losing a bit of myself when I focused on them and ignored my own needs. I think it's OK to set limits, and you could include your son in that discussion. Maybe your could read with a timer and then take a break from reading to do other things. You could come back to reading later. I'm sure you'll figure something healthy out as you seem to be that sort of person. :) I hope you make good progress on your lists before it's back to payroll tomorrow.

Last night, my first dose of doxy was very uneventful, thankfully. I'm going to be taking my second one here soon. After the dinner party last night, I booked my tickets to the baby shower in Seattle. I also sent off a draft of the first exam for review for the student who is taking her exams a week early. Then, I checked on my portal and saw that insurance didn't cover any of the urgent care visit. They also didn't cover the doxycycline -- but I was in a hurry yesterday and just paid for it anyway. This is making me wonder if something isn't correct with my insurance.

I'm up but feeling tired and headachy -- but I'm starting my day! Lots to do. It's a sunny but cooler day with a high forecast of 69*F.
