A flashcard or flash card is a card bearing information on both sides, usually intended to practice and/or aid memorization. It can be virtual (part of a flashcard software) or physical.

Typically, each flashcard bears a question or definition on one side and an answer or target term on the other. As such, flashcards are often used to memorize vocabulary, historical dates, formulae, or any subject matter that can be learned via a question-and-answer format.

Flashcards are an application of the testing effect, the finding that long-term memory is increased when some part of an individual's learning period is devoted to retrieving information through testing with proper feedback. Study habits affect the rate at which a flashcard user learns, and proper spacing of flashcards has been proven to accelerate learning.

Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for Mother start which is taking me back in time. I remember flash cards from when I was learning to read - they had something like "horse" printed on them in bold black type. I think they were called the "look and say" method, and people criticised it as children knew the card with the corner chewed off said "shop" without actually.knowing how to read the word - they had just memorised the association. Today, over here, they've moved to something called "phonics" to teach kids to read, but as kids are small people and people are all different, I find it hard to believe that a "one size fits all" method is suitable for everyone!

Bama and Dogged, thank you for your very kind words of encouragement over Freddie. So long as he's happy and still enjoying life, that's the important thing. If he starts to struggle to get on the bed then I'll get him a set of steps to walk up more easily rather than jump, but knowing him, he'll refuse to use them too!

Gma, that was very kind to bake cookies for the NHS staff.

Helia, WTG with all you achieved in DD27's room. That was kind of AA to help move the bed frame.

L.Ann, so good you were there to look after Little Bit while her mother dealt with an emergency at work.

Today I have the gift of a free day, which I need to use well. Now autumn has come, there is so much that needs doing outside, but of course, that needs dry weather. Looking at the forecast today looks reasonable, but we may get some rain in the afternoon, and tomorrow should be a lovely sunny day before the rain returns again. If one can trust the forecast, if course! So, I think I'll see what's happening when I'm dressed and had breakfast, and if it's dry go outside and at least do something until if /when it rains. Then I can do those drawers. :D

Today's list:

Cuddles on the bed with Matilda😀, Jude😀 and Freddie😀
QT😀
Physio exercises
Up, shower, personal care and dress😀
All cats fed
Take Freddie out? ( If he wants to go!)
Breakfast and meds /supplements -me
Rubbish down to bins
Go for my walk
Run hoover round downstairs?
Quick dust sitting room?
Garden time - can I feed pots? A little deadheading?
Lunch
Delicate /wool wash
Clean shoes
Polish bag
Fold laundry and PA
Clean sheets and towels out of the airing cupboard
Does DH have choir practice?
Cats' supper
Our supper
Bed at a reasonable time!

Extras:
If it rains-
Can I work on those two drawers under the bed?
Possibly deep clean hall? ( If the rain starts early!)

Garden extras:
Trim bits on hedge
Weed / deadhead
Feed pots
Cut grass
Autumn clear up -I will get there one job at a time.
Can I do 15 minutes on the clinic g rose? Pruning it and tying all the branches in is a huge job, but even that can be achieved a little at a time.
I think I will hold off planting those foxgloves I til the climbing rose is done, as I don't want to accidentally tread on any of them
Maybe I could start top dressing and feeding my pots of bulbs instead?
Are there any other roses that have stopped flowering and I could prune?
Is there any more montbretia that's looking tatty and needs cutting down? (Some clumps seem to keep going for longer than others!)

Gma, I'm sorry that your picnic got rained out. It sounded like fun. I love those old cars.

Bama, don't give Germane any ideas! I do enough cleaning up after her as it is, LOL.

Thank you for starting us off, trissie.

They have been moving back to phonics here too, Kittykatt, after experimenting with something called Whole Word Reading, which I understand caused a lot of misery to new readers.
Woo hoo for a free day. Here's hoping that the rain cooperates.

I have washed dishes and hung the main laundry load. I still have to hang the delicates.

Good morning ladies, haven't checked in for a while. I was a phonetic learner but my oldest was a whole word learner. Hooked on Phonics had flash cards but they were about sounds not words. I used flash cards to learn math facts as a kid and still make flash cards for students to learn from. I think both kind of reading should be taught. You need to know how to sound out unfamiliar words but there are key anchor words you just learn and know called sight words. Because kids use so much text to speech they often whole word read but that can really hinder their reading ability. I like to teach by dividing words into syllables to teach your eyes to read in parts which used your phonetic ability.

I never used flashcards much until I studied Hebrew at the big U here. Then I used them for vocab. Even making them was a learning exercise, more reinforcement of the word and it's meaning.

Nice to see you CL! Are you done traveling for a while?
trissie, you seem to be doing well managing the home and payroll today.
Enjoy your free day and time outside, Kitty.
WTG with the dishes and laundry Doggedly.

Yes, it was good to get the room largely prepped for dbro and dniece. There is still some prep left, but smaller tasks. Later last night, I graded my exams and figured out total grades, so I'm done with that admin stuff. End of session tasks should happen soon, but there's no rush.

Today is gray and cloudy with a high of 70*F. I have nothing on my calendar -- but lots to do. Dbro and dniece are arriving today. I don't know when; sometime this afternoon. I need to finish prepping their room, label M's shelf in the pantry and perhaps some of her food in the fridge so dbro and dniece don't eat it, make a quick trip to WF, do towel laundry. A jog would be good -- and then there's the end of session payroll tasks as well. I think those are the main things. And maybe a little writing; I'd like to note the highlights of a conversation I had with dh last night. Well, actually at 4:30 a.m. LOL! We were both awake and started chatting in bed. I might also run the yogurt and pudding to the nursing home as dd29 couldn't do it yesterday. Though we are going tomorrow to visit Mom. Not sure one day will make much difference.

Next:
- back exercises
- s2s and self care
- squeegee and wipe down shower

Later:
- some qt
- reclaim kitchen
- make the bed
- clean bedding on guest beds
- wipe down surfaces in guest room (aka dd27's room)
- label M's food
- WF run
- put food away
- reply to AC's message
- towels: w d f pa
- lunch at some point
- jog?
- some writing time
- payroll: end of sessions tasks
- read or knit?
- post in family thread re: Mom's condition
- welcome dbro + dniece when they arrive
- dinner out
- duolingo
- update health apps

☀️Good morning!
I didn’t want to get out of bed this morning. Dh said he wanted to sleep in since he’s sick and I took him at his word so why is he up and I’m not? Technically I’ve been awake 4 hours, I just haven’t done much. The gas company finally called me back so we set up an appointment. Now I need to shower and wake up. We have to drive to another city and pick up some vintage drinking glasses I bought that remind me of my childhood so that will probably be our day, shop a little, eat a little…
♥ Wake each day expecting good things to happen! ♥
