"Sleigh Ride" is a light orchestra standard composed by Leroy Anderson, who formed the idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1947, and finished it in February 1948.The piece was originally conceived as a short orchestral work intended to be part of a set of holiday music. Anderson came up with the idea after being inspired by the sound of sleigh bells and the imagery of wintertime. Its first performance was by the Boston Pops Orchestra, with Arthur Fiedler conducting, on May 4, 1948. Anderson also made additional parts and arrangements for wind band and pia It was a non-seasonal performance, since it was spring, but the piece still made a strong impression.

The earliest recordings were made before lyrics were added to Anderson's instrumental composition: it was first recorded in 1949 by Fiedler and the Boston Pops. As a 45 rpm version issued on red vinyl, "Sleigh Ride" was a hit record on RCA Victor Red Seal and has become one of the orchestra's best-known works. The Pops have recorded the piece numerous times, with Fiedler as well as John Williams, their conductor from 1979 to 1995, and Keith Lockhart, their current conductor.

In 1950, publisher Mills Music commissioned Mitchell Parish, a lyricist known for his works on songs like Stardust, to write lyrics, describing riding in a sleigh and other wintertime activities.

The Ronettes recorded a cover of "Sleigh Ride" in 1963 for Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift for You, which was commercially successful in the United States and featured in various media. The song has since been associated with the Christmas and holiday season.

Good morning everyone and happy Saturday!

WTG with progress on your bathroom, Gma!

Dogged, you got lots done yesterday. When this fence project started, I took a photo of the paint can "just in case" I ever needed to match it, but S left everything behind, right in my line of vision from the sitting room. I have moved it all to the other side of the gate, so I don't have to look at it for the next few weeks!

Today, DH is meeting up with some friends, and my plans are to work on the house, catch up with laundry, do a little in my front garden, and hopefully go for a walk. I think it's going to be a cold, but sunny day again, so I'd like to make the most of it. :D

I'm still alive, just taking the after-Christmas rest very seriously! :-)

We visited with my mother yesterday. It was... well, I made the mistake of allowing DBD to have some coca-cola, as there were no other soft drinks and she wanted something holiday-fancy. Needless to say, I will not repeat that again (I don't think she ever had a caffeinated drink before, as she prefers stuff like orange pop or grape juice soda). My sister talked about herself only, mom was hardly interested in the kids, and my step-dad is apparently not doing that great in their social isolation and has developed some really opinionated ideas about the way world works nowadays. But we survived and that's all that counts.Tomorrow, we are visiting with our friends, and then we have a week of Christmas break left, to spend at the cottage.

kittykatt, I didn't know I know the song! But the first tones were a dead give-away :-)

And now it's time to get serious about doing stuff!

WTG with visiting your family, trissie. I'm sorry for the relational difficulties. I can relate - likewise, my brother mainly talks about himself, and my parents never showed much interest in our kids. I even stopped telling them about awards our kids had won (they never knew that both dd27 and dd30 each won first place in their age category in a city wide story writing contest at ages 10 and 12) or their awesome test scores because such news was consistently greeted with. . . silence. Long utter silence. And then a change of topic. I never understood that. :?: I hope your visit with friends tomorrow is fun! And followed by a relaxing enjoyable week at the cottage.
So glad you're joining us kitkat!
I hope you get outside today, Kitty!
Good morning L Ann! Do you have an event-free day?

Dh and I very much enjoyed our dinner date out last night. It was our last time to have dinner just the two of us for a while.

RH was going to cook for us tonight, but it looks like that plan has fallen through. I'm not planning on cooking for other people tonight. Dh and I will probably just heat up leftovers for dinner. We might not explicitly invite RH to join us, but he might do that anyway. Tomorrow is the Sinter Klaas dinner - 10 of us. And then, M - Th, we're in WA state with the girls and ds + fam.

RH is now borrowing one of our cars from time to time. I guess that's more convenient than us driving him to places as we've done in the past. It just adds another layer to his long visit. He usually borrows dh's car, which is rather old, but he might need to borrow my car tonight to drive a longer distance to pick up KE who will be our 2nd houseguest, starting tonight.

Today: The only thing on calendar is shoes - it's the last night. Other things I'd like to accomplish: exercise - maybe a jog outside, yarn store to get the other skein spun for knitting, a grocery order so we have everything we need for an SK pannekoeken dinner tomorrow, start packing, finish the deskwork tasks that I haven't finished yet, wash a load of towels, tidy the hot spot cedar chest in our bedroom, prep the other guest room for RH and KE, AND finish wrapping gifts. Ha ha! That's quite a lot. But no single item should take hours; exercise with transportation time to the park will take about 1 hour and going to the yarn store might take close to an hour as well - those are the 2 longest items.

Some Goals for Today:
1. Exercise - jog outside this afternoon when it's a little warmer
2. Get yarn spun at yarn store (if I can bring it back to do that)
3. payroll: curriculum review
4. finish Mem. Thank yous - only 2 left
5. Finish wrapping gifts
6. pay property taxes
7. update charitable giving for the year
8. Bedroom tidy
9. Towels: w d f pa
10. Prep 2nd guest room for RH and KE - put bedding out. They can make the beds themselves.
11. Groceries - order or go get them.
12. Shoes - last night
13. Start packing?

Next:
- some qt
- back exercises
- s2s and self care

TaDas!
- up; weighed - a little less than yesterday but still very high
- coffee
- email deletions + weather website
- said good bye to M who is out for the day

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES
Sat PACK/ KE arrives/ make sure we have everything we need for SK/ shoes night 4
Sun special breakfast for 9? / write poems all day/ make 10 letter cookies with dd27/evening - celebrate SK!/ Pannekoeken dinner for 10 people

Mon 10 am - leave for the airport to TRAVEL TO WA to visit ds, F, and baby I ❤️
Tue See Ss in WA?

What book are you reading, L.Ann?
helia, I'm just wondering what kind of job your parents did raising their kids... I mean, one brother went off the rails, the other is... a specific person, and they didn't seem that interested in your achievements either? My mother was not that interested in parenting her own children so no wonder she is not interested in the lives of her grandchildren, other than providing stuff to either boast about or be pitied for by her friends.

TaDas
- midday routine
- 30 on laundry
- 3x10 - master bedroom, master bathroom, DBD's room

ToDos
- afternoon routine
- 3x10 - kitchen, living room, office
- start dinner
