Thursday in Our Own Backyards

Post by Harriet »

It is Backyard Day today (heavily advertised by the folks at Zyr tec allergy medicine, we may notice, lol).

But we are within Agriculture Week and today, specifically, Poultry Day as well, so a Backyard Day makes sense. From my yard, I hear 3 different poultry flocks, one of which is my ds' little henhouse. There's also the neighbor's across the road and my truck farming cousin's larger flock. He used to have a flock of guineas but I'm not sure he still does.

Here is what the Backyard Day folks say:

They're not just a little patch of land with some lawn chairs anymore. For some of us, they may barely be a porch or a postage stamp of concrete. But come to the end of the workweek, we transform them into Staycation Destination #1. We've mastered square foot gardens, vertical gardening, pallet furniture, the art of charcuterie, and giant lawn games.

In the evenings, we seek our backyards to explore nature. We wait for the bees to collect their nectar. Our bird feeders attract birds of every size and color and, with them, furry creatures, too. We look to the skies at night, tracking satellites and identifying constellations. With luck, we will see a meteor shower or two.

Our backyards offer peaceful solitude, a restful escape for reading and napping.

Hi Harriet!! Thank you for the perfect start to our day!!

I laid in bed, not wanting to get up. I realized it was Thursday and I could see that it was light out. I knew I had no choice. I HAD TO get up and sooner rather than later. So I reluctantly got up, got dressed and got going. The recycling and compost weren't going to take themselves to the end of the driveway!

I was outside doing this and I realized, to my delight, that it wasn't really windy. I grabbed one large paper leaf bag full of burnable recyclables and took it to the fire pit. I went and found the torch I use for lighting. TA DA!! The flames and smoke went straight up! YAY!! Total number of cardboard boxes burned = 4. Total number of large paper leaf bags full of burnable stuff = 9 !! There was stuff in one bag from a delivery that I got before Christmas. There has been either too much snow or too much wind to safely burn anything.

Dh and I had our coffee and hot chocolate. He said my hair smelled smoky when he kissed me. He knew I've been waiting and waiting to get these bags burned.
Dishes never stop.
Laundry never stops.
Litter boxes never stop.
Paper never stops.

A brief lowering of blood pressure in this little video clip I found. Enough to make Nancy, helia and me feel nostalgic.

Sounds here are rather jarring right now. Road construction continues and several trucks using my driveway to park. We decided against going out this morning. One estimate was that they might finish by this evening. Hmmm... .. estimates are seldom right.

Thank you for getting us started this a.m., Harriet. I am dragging today.

We were out last night until 10:30, then I read too long and we started the in and out thing with the dog. I think issue was that there are cats around! (Still wondering if we have ferals, saw one or more cats on our doorbell camera around dusk). Anyway, I was still awake past one p.m. denying her the right to go out and monitor the yard. (She had been in and out repeatedly already.) I finally fell asleep after one when dh said he would get up with her. Woke up later in the night with her sleeping with us so things had settled down. She was a pain last night and I'm dragging today.

I have a Zoom meeting at eleven and then workout at two. Somehow dreading Zoom meeting - first time for a newly formed small accountability group for certification renewal. Feeling shy and it's not a good day for me to be meeting, considering I'm leaving town on Saturday. Why do I have this feeling that I have to wrap up projects and get stuff done before leaving? And I'm just all over the place.

OMM - partly from list on in my planner:
reschedule sleep doc appt next week
text trainer about dog sitting for September trip
Text neighbor teen about dog sitting in May and June
Go online and turn HOA water back on
Distribute a HOA check, mail another.
registration sticker on my car
Spring pillows on porch
Pack (figure out what I'm taking...)
water plants
reschedule dcleaning lady

In reality, the texting could happen anytime, the spring pillows aren't a super high priority either.

And I'm feeling so unsettled about my research. I haven't been able (haven't taken the time, haven't had the bandwidth, aren't disciplined enough?) to put together research plan and think through what needs to be done so the whole trip feels unsettled. I'll have Sat night and Sunday night in hotel room before I have to hit the library, but since I'll be in D.C. I'd like to see the cherry blossoms and some sights too. I know I'm most productive when I have a plan and a list of what to cover.

Oh, and we are having dinner at dfriends tomorrow night - they set this up a month ago because there's some need to talk through temple biz - and I agreed to make a salad to bring. I'll need some groceries in house for that...need to beef up my usual salad plan (lettuce, something fruity, something crunchy, something salty) because she's vegan (no feta or goat cheese) and need to add lots more veggie/garbanzo beans to make it more substantial. An olive oil and vinegar dressing.

So I'm just all over the place today. I guess I'll feel better getting through meeting then workout today - dh is out this evening.

Good morning! Got to bed early last night, and I'm still dragging today. I probably should not have attempted to get up when DH was leaving; it was a complete failure. I have an alarm for 6:45 so I'm awake when DH kisses me goodbye, but I usually go back to bed until my next alarm at 7:30 (which I will sometimes push to 8:30 on Fridays, when I don't have to go anywhere). Well, this morning, I just kept hitting snooze on that first alarm. I was up pretty soon after the second alarm and got downstairs about 10 minutes earlier than usual, but I really should have just let myself go back to sleep till 7:30.

DC was even worse; I'm not even sure we got them to class on time. (I forgot to check the time when we arrived.) But other than cleaning up my breakfast dishes, getting them to class is about all that I've done.

I'd like to get into the playroom with the kids today. There are a few things bubbling up to the top of my to-do list that need to be done in there. I will be happy if we can finish cleaning off the top of the credenza. Eventually, I would like to get the printer there and put the supplies in the file drawer of the credenza. But that will require more cleaning first, as the file drawer is currently holding spare linens for the daybed, so I need a new place for those.

It's almost time to go get DC. Have a great day, everyone!

Just finished Zoom meeting for BCG renewal application. We're going to be meeting monthly going forward.

Next up will be my workout at two. I need to eat and finish a.m. routine and it's no longer a.m.

Adding to list earlier:
clean up workroom a bit. I don't want to come home to a mess here.

I've walked the loop was curious about the new power poles they put in. Got the first steps for this part of my day in.
Will do more walking in a while after it warms up a bit.
There are two up and one place was with out power for 6 hrs. the other 4 hrs. not me.
They have to come back in two weeks and take out the old poles and do something else about fabric
I assume the means the new lines for cable or what ever.

In the next town on the main drag they are doing rock removal, after the rains last week some
cracks showed up and for safety they are doing that, me not going over there today!
My own back yard is safer.

Saw dirt mover dump trucks on the loop when I walked today.

My change in meals for lent has surprised me in less need for out of the house stuff, and
less cooking / prep. time.

Good morning

Things are starting to feel a little more normal in my daily doings. My eating has been back on track for the last 2 days so my energy level is returning. It can be HARD to get myself out of a funk and back on track.

DS17 is working today for the first time in many days. He called twice this morning to tell me how happy he is to be working again.

I tweaked my cards so I can have better understanding of how I am doing. The number completed is a clue to my mental and physical status. So far today 97 have been accomplished.

I guess Twins' and I were both on our dreaded communications for the last hour. Glad mine was a call and not a zoom.
lucylee, there were four of us in attendance, 2 others who sent opinions instead, and one who chose not to contribute opinions this time, which is fine. I got one misunderstanding headed off at the pass, and one of my opinions stated, kept my mouth shut when others made points with which I agreed, so maybe we saved some fees by being this brief, lol. The misunderstanding did cause unnecessary contention, to the point we had an "are we still friends?" comment at the end, not directed at me, I hope. Thankfully, no wreck or traffic seemed to disrupt concentration.

Got several texts from dd27 as she left for a trip to New York. She says she was "patted down" but did not have her knitting needles on her person this time, so no worries, lol.

HRH says he has a lunch of leftovers ready. I had cooked last night, so that works out well. He just made rice and it's a meal.

Sewing is set up from last evening and ready at a starting point.
