Thursday, in Theory

Post by Harriet »

Practical homemaking is always ready for our attention! Chores are always close at hand!

But there's a lot of important homemaking that's done "in theory", too. Every time we readjust our schedules or tweak cards and calendars we're concentrating on theory! We might check out new record-keeping like switching to PocketMods for a project, or finding out what a new app can offer. We might reassess a chore and decide to break it down into parts, switch its timeframe or even delete it because it's outlived usefulness.

Our theory of homemaking can definitely evolve! Big changes like welcoming new household members, making a move, or considering an empty nest all get us to consider theory for sure! We might notice that our entryway hasn't looked welcoming, or storage isn't living up to its potential, or the family really needs better menu planning. Another household that we love might need us to carve out new homemaking time slots.

How will you ponder homemaking today... ... in theory? :)

I've been thinking in theory about adjusting my summer schedule & cards since LO will be my "helper" 99% of the time. I want him to be a kid and enjoy his summer with an abundance of play time, but I also want him to develop good habits that are self directed. I'm not trying to make him responsible for himself in all areas, but a few that will hopefully stay with him for a lifetime. Yesterday I ordered a I Can Do It Reward Chart: Brush My Teeth. LO does excellent brushing his teeth once a day, but it is hit-or-miss on twice a day. I'm hoping the chart will help establish that lifetime habit.

I am in a slump and am struggling to get back on track. Everything is behind so it seems overwhelming. I know that I just need to keep doing what I'm suppose to do over and over and it will get caught up. Knowing and theory is one thing....actually getting it DONE is a bigger challenge for me.

Hmmm.... I think homemaking will be largely a theory for me today as I'll be out and about much of the day and then hosting our Thursday crew for dinner. I guess prepping for that is homemaking. We'll have an extra 5 guests for dinner, 4 adults and 1 child. Well, 6 guests if I include baby J. That will make for 11 around our table tonight. Dfriend S is making bulgogi. I'm making rice, bread, asparagus, and I'll probably provide some fruit too.

I have just had a cup of tea and emailed with my mentoree student. We are going to keep in touch over the summer, even though she has a summer internship in WI. We're still working through Foster's Celebration of Discipline, trying one discipline/month. I have also folded 1 lol and started another in the machine.

Today:
- top by Panera for some sort of food item for. .
- moms group potluck picnic at a local park 9:30 - 11:30
- party store to check out their supplies
- back to Costco, likely; I'm going to order my cake from there and pick up needed veggie trays the day of the party.
- possibly GFS.
- host dinner for 11, including my family and not including baby J
- exercise of some form. Might be kind of warm for a jog this afternoon.

OK, I'm off to s2s and get this day going.

I'm visual so my successes always come when I use visual organizing tools. For instance, while we are using google calendar for planning, I have also printed off a copy of May and June and they are under the plexiglass of the kitchen table so always in full view (except during open houses.) The colour coded floor plan of the apartment is there too since it tells me where furniture is being placed so I know how to label the boxes.

There are 6 sections to the apartment: Office & its bathroom, kitchen & laundry rooms, dining room, living room & foyer, guest bedroom & bath & storage closet, master bedroom and bath. Each has been assigned a colour and all boxes are plastered with stickers in the right colour. The box is also labeled with something to identify it. If it is books, it says books. If it is random stuff from a drawer, it says which drawer the contents came from. Unfortunately, I'm only labeling contents on the top so once boxes are stacked, I won't really know what is where (labels are on 5 sides). I'm hoping unpacking happens faster than packing. My deadline is July 7 when ds comes home.

Got the theory down pat, now to see how it works in practice.

The brownies I made last night are too rich. Had one last night and felt sick. Same thing this morning. And that was a low-fat brownie mix. Into the compost they go. Will get marshmallows while I'm out today. In the evening I want something sweet so will have some rice krispie squares (and that will help eat up the rice krispies since that and dsil are the only reason I have them in the house.)

Today is gathering boxes, perhaps getting more stickers (especially dining room pink) and hopefully the mulch for the gardens. We can't get both mulch and boxes at the same time, the car won't hold enough of either. We need at least 30 more boxes to finish the week's challenge. I'll bring a utility knife so we can collapse the boxes as we find them.

Dh says the bed in the basement has to come down now because that is where we are stacking finished boxes and the room is over crowded now. So that means we also have to find a place to store the mattress and box spring (the base of the bed is boxes.) I think there is room in the tall storage for that, or under the stairs in the storage room.

Tonight is our meeting with the buyers. We'll meet at their house once their little girls are asleep. Looking forward to a chance to see what they are selling. I still maintain it is overpriced by about $40K but maybe there is something about it that doesn't show from the photos.

Tree branch fell over night I got it free from the tree so it is safe. So we will be dealing with that this weekend. First I will be picking fruit off then pruning branches less than one inch off.

In theory I was going to do mopping today before I discovered the tree prob. To deal with. Dgd will not be here.

Laundry is current dishes are current. Bed needs attn.

Home keeping is mostly theoretical for me today also. I need to continue with the financial work from yesterday in prep for a meeting tomorrow. My mom has a dr appt at 1 p.m. today also so I will be on the road with her, and also need to p/u her meals. Also need to p/u ds at 4:30 or so and he and dd have a dr appt at 5 p.m. with the psychiatrist who has monitored meds with them.

I also badly need a desk day and need to follow up on random OMM things.

Good morning from Arizona. Just a note to say hi and that we are fine. Busy with church and getting ready to go up the mountain for the summer. Otherwise my life is boring.

MT: Boring is good. Nice to see you checking in!

I'm done my breakfast so I suppose I should get dressed now.

I miss having a good night's sleep. I couldn't stay in bed because it wasn't relaxing or refreshing me but I was exhausted and didn't want to get moving today.

Aaaarrh. Ten minute phone call re dmom's mail order meds. The debit card which is in her purse was declined and they didn't notify either of us, so meds not shipped and she is out now. And they won't take her correct CC info from me because they don't have the POA form on file. So I had to put meds on my CC and will have to get doc to write script for 30 days to get at pharmacy, and pharmacy call for override and and and and and. My own fault for not checking on this sooner but sometimes I just can't keep all the balls in the air. This one got dropped.

I've started a lol and done parts of a.m. routine.
