Sunday... Satchels and Baggage

Good morning, village!
Today, I thought I would start with a question... what sort of stuff do you carry around with you? I started this thinking totally in a practical manner. My new purse, remember, that I was so proud of last Tuesday? Well... I have yet to carry it anywhere. I believe it is too big and too heavy. Tonight I told dh it was going right back to Belk and he is shaking his head again... He just HATES it when I do this. (Return stuff to the store.)
I am sick of my old purse, have no better old purses to replace it with, but * wow * -- I actually weighed the new purse and it weighed 8.5 pounds (fully loaded with my "stuff.")
That is almost two pounds more than the old purse, and I think it measures a little bigger also. Plus, it is supposed to SNAP shut, but with all my * stuff * in it, the snap won't stay shut. My other purse has a strap that comes across the top and at least gives a little more security and less visibility to all the junk in there.

So. I have a challenge:
Go weigh your purse and let me know how much yours weighs.

Then give me some tips on decluttering my purse.

And in the meantime, maybe some of us could think about how to get rid of some of the other "baggage" we carry around in our heads that weighs us down unnecessarily. Surely I'm not the only one.

What an interesting challenge!

I'll weigh mine after dh wakes up. I don't think I can weigh it on my kitchen scale - it will weigh too much for it!

I love my new 'Prada' backpack purse (I put the word in quotes because I paid $5.99 from Goodwill and can't really believe it is Prada, except the thing is very well put together so that makes me wonder....) It holds tons but isn't giant. I still have trouble finding things in it but that's my fault for dumping everything into the bottom. There is one inside compartment (which has my watch and business cards) and two outside pockets (cell phones in one, eye drops or anything else I need quick access to in the other) and then the main compartment in which I have several travel pouches so my junk is subdivided - medical things, appearance things, plastic shopping bags (they charge us here so I have three in case I forget my bag in the car), and a tiny purse on a string that holds my cash and credit cards and can be pulled out and used on its own if I need something smaller but with all my ID. I also have my calendar and toss in my tablet before leaving the house. There's still room for my school notebook, water bottle and a book should I wish.

I'm up and slowly getting at it. Another beautiful sunrise but mist is taking over now. It is very pretty to see it nestled in the low lying areas.

I hope ds had a good night at work and gets a good sleep. I was in bed over 7.5 hours so think I'm probably rested. Dh is sleeping a bit longer.

Church should be interesting this morning - the Blessing of the Animals. This is something Anglicans do every year but as a United Church, we've never done it. I had proposed to dh that we skip church today so he could work but he's delivered enough to NZ that he thinks he can fake them out until after the moving day and he doesn't want to miss church today at all.

1.207k = 2.66pound here. I find that too heavy, and had taken out a bundle of papers this morning.
When I go to the markets or to the library I just take my pull along cart.

I've just been watching the 1 down 5 to go Monty Python special. Lots of their famous skits.

I need get the computer off and push through my dishes so I can get to bed.

Mine weighed in at 5.5 pounds. I'm impressed with Lynlee's purse. I'm wondering if she'll end up with the lightest. How much is this a North American attitude issue. Just like we supersize everything, have we decided that we can't live without our stuff to the point where we hurt ourselves by carrying around too large a subset of our stuff at all times.

Son-of-a-gun! I just googled my purse and it is a real Prada!

Woot! Correction: it is a counterfeit. The real one has Prada stamped on all the buckles and mine doesn't. Phew! I'd hate to own a status symbol. The link is to a bag that functionally looks just like mine

Made arrangements to see my minister friend next Sunday. That will be a good reward for what is likely to be a difficult week. Yay (I like having lights at the end of the tunnel that aren't trains!)

Good morning, Kathryn! Thank you again from all of us for your (and Ken's) work keeping our site going. Hopefully his trek will be easier as time goes on today and tomorrow.

My purse? Well, I stopped carrying my purse this spring. I've been carrying (when I need to) a small wristlet which has some $$, my needed cards and occasionally a receipt or 2. It probably weighs 4oz. Love that I'm getting away with that and don't have that weight on my shoulder. There are times when I have to carry something a little bigger -when I'm attending a function mostly like a wedding. Then I have a dressier 'bag' that will hold tissues, comb, lipstick etc. DD and I have gotten to the point of not even having to carry a purse to Disney. Especially now that they have bracelets with admission, etc on them. Not sure, since we won't be leasing a room, if they will have our credit card attached or not. We've ended up with a 'uniform' for Disney which has appropriate pockets to hide a card and a few bills, a tissue or 2. And we make do -so much nicer than lugging something -also makes entry a lot easier/faster.

I'm still tired out from a very long day yesterday. I was awake from about 4:30 -6 then slept till after 7. Now it's nearly 9 and I'm sitting here and sipping coffee. Need to get my hair washed and get ready for church. We'll have to leave earlier since our place of worship is about a mile further, but there's 2 red lights and a canal with a lift bridge between spots. As well, we'll probably have to park and walk a fairly short distance to the church. So, I'm off>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

My fav. Purse wad a denium one but had to replace it syill need to get another denuim one. I carry wallet, diab. Pouch = pencil case some timse my tablet pc but makes it heavier. Snacks, cloth tape measure, keys etc. In mine. Not sure how to weight it with out the stuff in it.

Had a low up at 5 a m hens are fed watering the back yd now. Journaling done. Granny duty went well yesterday. Found marshmallows sent tnem home with ddg for the campfire time.

Oh -- definitely weigh WITH your stuff! Mine only weighs a pound or two if it's empty.

what a neat challenge! d lucy... your challenge made me clean out my purse. I have a smaller leather purse but I am terrible because I no longer carry a wallet bc all my cards kept falling out of it.... so now I have no idea where things are. my d mom bought a little zip purse to carry a pass port holder wallet my d dad used to have and it works great. I don't carry credit cards with me any more so my needs for a wallet have dropped but I am thinking of getting a small zipper makeup holder for my cards.

I am a minimalist when it comes to carrying a purse. When your ride motorcycles you learn to pack light... Sometimes I leave the house with just my cell phone in one back pocket and a very small credit card carrier in the other. My go to's are several very small purses which can either be used like a fanny pack or a cross body bag. It has slots for my drivers licence, a debt card, a credit card and my fold up readers. I also carry my tiny meds container, contact case and lip stick. It will also hold my phone.

Even when I use a "real" purse I don't carry much more...I have a wallet that is a little longer as a dollar bill that holds my money, a small make up purse where I keep my meds, a hair tie, contact case and lipstick. There is a slot for my reading glasses and cell phone. I also have a fold up brush. Oh, and a pen. That's it. The only time I will add more is when I sub. I have a larger purse and added to the above stuff I will sometimes included a book or magazine.

As you may have seen in the news this morning, we had a bit of rain around here yesterday

The airport had had so much rain in one day that it broke a record...1.64" We had plenty around us as well, but the real brunt of the storm was really on the west side of Phoenix...and I'm on the east. Our backyard became a lake, but Sweetie was able to pump most of it out as it was raining. It was suppose to be clear skys today, but as I look outside I can see rain clouds forming and my weather radar is confirming that another storm is on its way.

The winds were very strong yesterday and the rain fell sideways and hard much like an Alabama hurricane. The reason all the streets flood around here is because of the rain run off. The natural ground is very hard like cement so it doesn't absorb very well. The runoff forms streams and then rivers and seeks the lowest point it can find. The desert is a system of natural gullies and washes which really can't be diverted without causing additional flooding. Thats why we have so many water retentions around the valley. During the dry times these retention areas are recreation places. During the monsoon season, they become huge lakes.

I was going to walk Willis this morning, but looking at the skies I am beginning to doubt that will happen. My house is in good order so this may be the perfect time to curl up with a good book. I love when that happens.

At the house now after church.

The blessing of the animals went really well. The dogs were all quiet during the sermon, just lying at their spots with their masters. Rupert (a basset hound) barked during the hymns. His mistress was the reader and he climbed up into the choir loft while she read!

At the house now. I've changed into work clothes and am eating my lunch now. Ds is here. He woke up after fewer than 3 hours sleep and is working hard with dh. Already the upstairs is emptied completely and I hear them working on the basement now.
