blessed, I think The Voice of Terror was the one that included plastic surgery of the face. I'm not sure that was actually in the original writing by Doyle. A lot was changed for the films. It was written in 1916 but the movie was early 1940s, and it was more about the war and spying than medicine. Still fascinating. Attacking someone using chloroform was an idea that was just in its infancy when Doyle wrote. Later, The Lancet medical journal would defy Doyle's assertion that a character could have been chloroformed and stayed unconscious so long without dying, unless under medical supervision. But then, it's fiction. And after all, Dr. Watson was there! ;)

In literature, at least, on forward-thinking forensic medicine, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (it's his birthday) was a trail blazer. He suggested the idea of a unified field of forensic science before it existed. He inspired scientists to push the concept forward much faster than it might have been, because in his writing it had already happened. Everything from blood samples in investigation, to fingerprinting techniques, to the eventual concept of DNA as a testing for crime were employed faster because of him. He took what was already happening in medicine and suggested fictional crimes in which that physical evidence would help Sherlock, and then it seemed more possible.

It's going to rain for several hours tonight. I hate it for dd42, because as the boys mowed the lawn yesterday they sent a rock through her van window (drivers). She has it plastic-covered as best she can but the glass guy couldn't come until tomorrow.

I went over there this afternoon to enjoy the unboxing of her first order from Hungry Root. (She's the experimenter. I never order anything like meals.)
It was very cool. What I really wanted to know was whether they packaged the already-cut ingredients as well as their commercials show, and they do seem to do that. She thinks it seems to be a value so far, it's just that the selection is not as good as her boys appreciate. WonderBoy will eat every fresh thing in the box and love it, but the rest can be rather picky. He is the only boy who ate every bite of their meal tonight and asked for seconds.
