I am up, sitting here with a mess! My initial plan was to spend 1/2 or so downstairs straightening things up, trying to bring some order to things and then head upstairs. Dh is going to have drinks and snacks out tonight so I won't be cooking or trying to prepare anything. We have a grill, countertop toaster oven that can bake (somewhat) and a small microwave. I can cross a bunch of stuff off my a.m. routine for now: kitchen counters, clear and wipe breakfast bar, what's for supper, empty the dishwasher, LOL.

I'm tempted to retreat upstairs now on the premise that I worked so hard yesterday I need a rest today, but I think I shouldn't.

So I need to do what I can of a.m. routine, then:
-try to bring some order to kitchen table, which will be outside the curtained-off-with-plastic kitchen (I need to bring down a plastic tablecloth to cover it too)
-try to bring some order to foyer, where there are extra DR chairs with stuff stacked on them
-try to bring some order to DR, where there is stuff everywhere. It didn't make sense to pack up a lot of the larger kitchen things because it would take so many storage boxes. So a lot of those things are under the DR table. And the DR table is full of stuff...

I'm kind of sickened by how much stuff we have in this small kitchen. Thinking back, we moved from a larger kitchen, and then I also brought home things from my dmom's that I didn't have a place for. So as things get put back, I need to purge. We'll have slightly more cabinet space plus we're getting shallow cabinets on the back side of the island. It's hard to figure out life going forward. Will we start having big Rosh Hashana gatherings again? Entertaining? I have three sets of china - mine, my mil's and a Judaic set that we used for Jewish holidays. Plus dmom's upstairs stored for dd. What is our lifestyle as empty nesters? I don't want our kids to have to do so much clean out like at dmoms. I have an entire box of stuff from dh's dmom that we used at one time, but haven't in years. And he would never ever let her twelve place settings of china go.

The Js aren't here yet - it's a crew of three, father and son, and another, and all names start with J. Between the three of them, they can do gas, plumbing, electric work, anything and everything else.

Gotta get going, need to shower badly!

I'm through the s2s stage and just finished taking my morning meds. Next is get my hair washed and try to do something with it. I have an 11am appointment with my cardiologist. DD was going to go with me but she called just a little bit ago and asked if she could beg off (not into the Dr's office with me anyway -we were just going grocery shopping). DDIL-A and DGS10 had asked her if she wanted to go visit a POW camp about 40 miles west of here at Hamlin Beach. Guess it was during WWII -never knew there was one there. DGS is SO interested in history. DD kept asking me if I was sure it was ok. ABSOLUTELY! She gets precious little time with any of them and we're together for about 7 months of the year.

DGD27 texted me last night. This is the DGD who just had a baby about 5 weeks ago. We had a family get-together Thursday night. Her dh became ill Saturday. Just got his Covid test back yesterday -positive and he has strep. I don't think any of us ever were in real close proximity to him Thursday night and it was all outdoors. We're going on the premise that none of us could have caught it. DGD did a test yesterday that was negative. They've been so careful for 2 years -and she's an RN. At any rate when they ask that question: "Have you been around anyone who was recently diagnosed with Covid?" My answer is going to be no.

Off I go to get my breakfast. See you all later after I get "good news" -we're due I think.

Yeah, bw2, I wonder about that. Is it realistic to keep the number of wine glasses we have, knowing that we may not have holiday parties as large as before? And I have soooo many identical small glass plates - used them for appetizers and dessert at times. We haven't had Rosh Hashanah in in two years, and if we do this year, it probably needs to be on a smaller scale.

I decamped upstairs. I could continue to work on the dining room but I felt I needed to get out of the way while they were taking out our countertops. We have some cardboard boxes in the garage, I hope I can still get to them after today and I'll continue to work on packing up some things I moved in there just because I didn't want to take time to wrap them etc. When they have lunch I'll get the plastic tablecloth for the kitchen table put on and continue straightening it up too.

A.m. routine is done, what I'm doing of it these days.

it's true - it's hard to know what to keep.

I decided to let go of almost everything - I used to have large parties and I wanted it to look uniform. I rent now if I decide to do that - I have enough wine glasses for 10 people, white plates for 10 as well. I used to have beautiful things but it took up so much space.
I did keep my tea dishes - I rarely use them but they still give me joy.

Last weekend our neighbors had a wedding - rehearsal dinner that was so elegant. They hired servers, had someone decorate their yard (which is beautiful) - had a really long table filled with crystal, dishes etc. all rented and set up. the even had candles that were stunning that wasn't theirs. I never saw her outside until the dinner. It truly was elegant. I figure if she (only 30 years old) can do this then I can too. Not one thing was theirs and it was stunning. She has money and her house is stunning (very streamlined) but she made it so she didn't have the stress of trying to do it all. She, her husband, 34, and all their guests had a wonderful time! It truly was beautifully elegant.

Good morning, all! I started a post yesterday and never finished it.

DH had surgery yesterday — minor, just had a cyst removed — but the poor thing was sick as a dog afterward. Eventually we got him to where he could keep some soup down, and he felt better after that.

Made some good progress on work yesterday; finished proofreading a long document. If the SME (subject-matter expert) is okay with it, it’s ready to be sent on to the next step in the process.

Question for Harriet as our resident Carolinian: What would a lazy person bring to a potluck down that way? Girls’ night theme this month is Mayberry. Desserts and main dish are already taken. I hate themes! I suppose for some folks, it gives that mosquito a place to start, but for me, it just adds pressure and frustration.

I need to do laundry today — I am looking quite fancy for a day at home, because that’s what I have clean. Decided to stick to my cards today. Next up: dishwasher/breakfast dishes.
