Pie in the Sky Saturday

Well...today is chocolate pecan pie day! I'm not sure how it would taste, but it's chocolate, so it's got to be good, right?

It's official as of yesterday. dMum's house has been sold!! Not even three weeks on the market, and we got close to the price we were asking! The possession date is September 19 (oddly enough, 27 years to the day that dDad passed away). Now begins the seriously monumental task of getting EVERYTHING over there packed up and either moved over here or into storage. We reserved the smallest storage unit, so there will only be room for the four antique dining chairs as far as furniture goes. Closer to the date, we'll have to get the living room furniture here moved out, and dMum's stuff moved in. So many lists to make! So much to do! I'm already feeling overwhelmed!

Today, we're supposed to be going out west of the city to see dmonsterboy and buy school supplies. He lives with his biodad now for a variety of reasons. It's been a while since I saw him, and I'm really looking forward to it! We're taking dbratdog with us, since dmonsterboy hasn't seen her in ages.

I'll set out a bunch of fruit trays, some muffins, pastries, coffee, tea, iced water, and juice...then I have to go feed the starving critters and get started on my morning daily stuff.

Bittersweet - Thanks for the start today and the lovely selection of virtual food and drinks you prepared for us. Congrat's on the sale of your DMom home. You can do this! One day at a time.

I took advantage of the one day a week that I can sleep late and stayed in bed until 8:15. FBit says my sleep score was 91 so I did some seriously good sleeping last night.

Today starts my 2 weeks of practice for making fried pies. Because my biggest concern is keeping them fresh for hours (not get soggy), I am going to try making Chef John hand pies. They are baked instead of fried. Because I don't want to turn my oven on, (95F today) I will try cooking them in the air fryer. I don't have lofty expectations but more of a learning & practice mindset. When I get a decent hand pie then I must keep everyone from eating it for a day so I can see if it maintains its crispy factor. I have LOTS of practicing and failing to do.

DS14 left for work this morning. He worked until 10pm last night. He knows he can't do that tonight because I need him to stay home with DD11. DH and I will be attending lifelong DFriends 50th anniversary party this evening.

Dh went to Torah study and I'm upstairs. He's supposed to be out today, but I think his activity - the fantasy football draft at a neighbors on the river - will get rained out.

You'll have your hands full emptying your dmom's house; I've been there. I emptied it first, then sold, tho.

I should get going but as usual, I'm having trouble getting focused.


Question of the day, please? Do you use a shelf paper or shelf liner? Somehow I've always hated "naked" shelves, probably a throw back to my mother's dutiful lining in my childhood. I'm thinking of "doing it right" and using it as I unpack the kitchen?

Twins I use a shelf liner that looks a tiny bit padded. I bought it at Wal Mart"... "easyLiner" brand shelf liner. "Smooth top" ideal for cabinets in kitchen, bath, and laundry rooms..." The only size that they had in white (because there were a few bare spots where the bigger sizes were) was 12 inches x 15 feet. Can't remember what I paid. I use it in most of my drawers and cupboards in the kitchen and under the sink in the bathroom. The previous owner of this house left every single cupboard stained (not to mention the dust, dirt, trash and stickiness.)

Do you use a shelf paper or shelf liner?

I have in the past. When we moved into this house it had stuck on liners that were in good shape, so I left them in place. Over the years I have removed one after another of the shelf liners and prefer to have white painted surfaces. There is something about the edges of the paper/liner that bugs me. However, I have 60+ year old hand build cabinets & drawers so they have different challenges than the newer cabinets.

I went through DD11 Thursday folder. Making a note on calendar because next Wednesday is her day to take snacks for everyone. Her class has 17 students this year. She made 100 on all her papers this week, but she didn't feel accomplished because "It was 3rd grade level work".

I am finding my new rule for myself to be a bit perplexing. My rule = on days that I gain weight then I will log my food in cronometer. Since I made that rule, I have only gained weight (.02 lbs) on one day. Each morning I step on the scale expect to see the number go up and I'm prepared to start logging my food, but the scale keeps going downward. I have eaten out the last two days and that usually always causes weight gain. It seems I am overeating but I'm not seeing that reflected on the scale. Strange!

it's raining today - probably on and off the rest of the day.

last night I was awake most of the night - go figure. It is what it is. I need to pull a book for me to have next to my bed.
our neighbor had a loud party until 1 am. I don't mind 11 - 11:30 and quieting down a bit but this was roaring. They have lots of parties but this one was a particularly bad one. School starts Monday and I assume that they were having a last hurrah.
I always assume that when I work hard that I will sleep well.

What needs attention:
Pick the corn that needs picking - make a salad and freeze the rest - I am hoping to keep the corn stalks for fall decorating.
remove any paint that bled through the tape.
hang curtain rod.
put things back but keep room for the window washer
take dogs out in the rain every hour and half
have dd help me move hammock
pick up dog stuff outside
dialies (i want the family to help me as the dogs are shedding) and weeklies in the family room. They won't want to but I want the house clean to the point where we can always have company
vacuum the family room

What one thing will make my life easier? get a new debit card instead of putting things on my card.
What can make our home easier to use?
What can make our meals easier and healthier

LM Hand pies are a goal of mine what size of circle of dough are you doing? Do you have a cookie cutter type thing or are you cutting around a round thing like cup , class or saucer?

I was up 2x in the nite went back to bed and slept till after five today yea!
Had to do three laps around the yard to limber up however, & did some weeding as it was lite out by then.

I have been journaling, walked the dog had bfast temps. are not too bad here so far today 99* is the hi. it was 68* when I got up.

Today's plan sewing progress to make pin flannel house dress pattern.
Made bread / pizza dough as mini pizza were not in stock.

what size of circle of dough are you doing? Do you have a cookie cutter type thing or are you cutting around a round thing like cup , class or saucer?

[url=hhttps://youtu.be/vae9wVRIXag?t=237]Chef John shows rolling the dough into 8" circle.[/url] I am going to be trying his method. It doesn't need to be perfectly round because the dough is folded twice along the edges and crimped.

I will be making chili for 120 people on the first week of September, so this morning I practiced. My practice wasn't an exact replicate because I reduced the ingredients by 1/8. Also, I couldn't resist adding sauteed onions to our chili ingredients today but I won't be using onions for the big meal. The chili turned out well so I'm feeling ready to make the big amount in two weeks.

alrighty - looking for motivation - motivation happens when you just start. Motivation comes when you build on your success - don't know who said this but I like it. I tend to look for motivation instead of just doing one thing - it becomes a procrastination battle.

I am going to only list one thing at a time and build on that success.

I took a cup of coffee and a banana from Bittersweet's buffet this morning. Thank you! If you are going to put your DMother's furniture in your house, what will you do with the stuff you already have there?

DH picked up a plant stand off the road today and put it in the living room. ARRRRGH! It is an old style wood thing with stains. I told him I didn't want it, especially in that corner where I hope to put a chair someday and certainly not something that looks like that. I'm more than upset over this.

Been working on that dust ruffle. I didn't know when I decided to do this that the ruffle itself is nice cotton, but the upper part is some sort of polyester that is flimsy and can't be ironed, can't be made to crease, snags under the machine needle, etc. etc. I worked on it last evening and somehow it didn't turn out right (just pinned) so I laid it out on the dining room table and started over. Now I've painstakingly sewed the pleat (tuck) all the way down the length to take up the extra width. I don't know how it will look and now I'm thinking that process made the top smaller but the ruffle will still be as long...so maybe this isn't good? I will soon find out. It is in the wash now.

I can't leave it off the bed, we have an ugly old wood platform box DH built that shows if I do. Really new fine mattress on top, but this thing is the pits. I had a nicer one in other bedroom and I painted it white. This one had not been sanded and finished nicely. It was done in a hurry when we were putting the bed together. Now I'm thinking this might not be good....
