Suddenly Saturday Stock-taking!
Well, for me, last week certainly went by quickly!
When I pause and take stock a couple of important things were accomplished but I think I'm just getting better at ignoring all that has to be done so my overwhelmed feelings are easing, but not because I'm actually chipping away at them!
When you take stock of the last week, are you happy with your progress, disappointed, or ambivalent?
If ambivalent, is that because your routines kept your on track?

Re: Suddenly Saturday Stock-taking!
At this very moment the boards are running well. I make note of this because I'm about to move into another time zone and may be able to take advantage of this.
Sorry I disappeared. I see my last post was on Wednesday.
Sorry also for this long/skippable update!
I did make progress through the week except on the piles of paperwork.
One big thing I'm working on is setting up the residents' association to run without me on the critical path all the time. It is hard because people are used to coming to me with everything and I need to slowly retrain them. So there are a number of on-going projects to achieve this, as well as the spike in activities that we are now organizing. Plus tenants want to uprise about the a/c situation and current lease renewals are for a 4.5% increase and in September the majority of the tenants will receive notice their rent is going up 5%. That will cause outcry and extra work for me so I'm trying to get processes in place to deal with that before the sh-- hits the fan.
Getting the bank account set up to receive e-transfers from members was a big step in that direction. People literally hand me or dh money in the lobby and the latest note attached to $10 from dh says "Cathy, 502, Ed will know who this is." Ed didn't know! I ran into her last night and discovered she is actually Kathy and now I have her email and last name so can have her properly added to our membership list. In future, people can use e-transfer (which includes and email address) and that will make it easier for us to add people to the list.
The membership list itself is a mess and is in the process of being moved to a data base from a spread sheet. That will allow us to add fields for when people express interest in joining groups or doing organizing.
On Wednesday I also handed the craft fair in the fall over to someone who speaks 'crafting' and she's a force of nature, having already booked the social room for the date she selected and is peppering me via text with a ton of questions. I need to move that conversation over to email so it will be easier to track the conversation in the future.
Finally, I'm in the middle (stalled out trying to share it) of setting up a google calendar that all board members can update. Then we can post it on our website and people can see upcoming events. We are getting a number of regular events (a monthly bbq and a monthly brown bag lunch, plus euchre on Wednesdays) and only one of those are run by our Event Coordinator, others are being run by members who don't want to be on the board. This is fantastic but it needs tracking and my brain isn't the place to put these tidbits of information! But I will accept that it is a sign that my vision of people feeling free to come forward and organizing little things is working.
The stated goal of the group is building friendships within the apartment community and I'm proud to say that is now happening as I originally envisioned it years ago. I will also say that I worked hard to keep us connected during Covid lockdowns when we couldn't do anything in person and that is now paying off in spades. As much as I hate Facebook, and as much as the FB group includes whiners and bullies, the group was a major part of keeping people connected in a good way.
Here's an example: Deliveries are constantly being stolen and that's discussed a lot. One woman who is in the group because her elderly mother isn't online, asked her mom if anything of her deliveries had gone missing. Why yes, it was a bottle of perfume several weeks before. She later posted that the perfume had been found and given to her mom. It was sent by mail, went into the wrong mail slot and that person was away on holidays. When they got home, they found the perfume, remembered the comment, and the mis-delivery was fixed.
Another woman reconnected a $50 bill that was in the washing machine with its owner using the group. (She didn't tell us the denomination, just said money was found.)
So when I take stock of my progress this week, furthering the goals of the residents' group is a significant part of the progress I made this week.
The smoke has settled but the heat continues. Still, I made it out for 3 short walks so that's progress. And dgs2 and I had a good time at the park because we could go out in the morning and it wasn't too hot. He slept well in the afternoon until the fire alarm testing! (Still he managed a 2 hour nap so I'm not disappointed.)
The weekly housework got done (I'm ignoring zone work at the moment because I'm so overwhelmed.)
And dfs wrote asking for the details of our trip on Thursday and that reminded me that I was missing hotel reservations for to/from Nova Scotia. And that we were to leave in a week! That ended up taking hours and hours because of costs and availability. Plus I wanted to make the trip to/from a bit special and not just a 17 hours over 2 days road trip.
As a result we now have a nice 9 day trip planned. Dh has a hair appointment on Wednesday at 1, so we'll load almost all the car before then, he'll bus to his appointment, I'll finish closing up the apartment and loading the food and we'll head out. We'll drive the 4 hours to Burlington VT, taking, probably 6 hours to do it. The next day is 7.5 hours of driving plus stops for charging and at the Ben and Jerry's Factory. Then 5 hours to our AirBnB in Halifax. Three days there, then two nights with dfs and family at White Point, then a ferry across the Bay of Fundy and an hour's long drive at night to a hotel (that's our worst day of the trip but also our best since we'll start the day with grandchildren, get a ride on the water, and then be positioned to enjoy the last two days of our drive), then 6 hours to Quebec City to a fancy Auberge we ate at once and said we wanted to stay at 'some day', and finally 4.5 hours home on July 21. Hotels are booked along the way. The only limiting factor is because we are crossing the border, I can't take fresh food with us so I have a lot of veggies to eat up and milk to drink!
Originally, I had planned the US portion of the trip to come after the ferry ride. But where we needed to stay was fully booked and the next nearest location was asking US$350 for a lower tier chain hotel. By reversing the trip, I got our US night down to $250 and will be staying at the fancy Auberge for less than the one night at the Comfort Inn.
Getting the trip planned was my other big accomplishment of the week.
Now I have a panicked "get things done" few days ahead. Plus dd's kids want me to join them at a museum tomorrow and at the swimming classes on Monday.
So I don't have a lot of time to pack and get paperwork in order before we leave.
Dh is also under pressure because he has been working on developing a new game (baseball based) and so we've been trying to get practice games in. Ds is working with him on that and yesterday they spent time burning the gameboard at the library. It is a work of art. It will be 5 layers of wood, laminated, and designed with peg and dice storage inside the playing board. It will also cost over $50 each to produce and I have no idea how many hours of work. Ds took the first two with him yesterday to start the laminating and having stopped at DC's father's home (where the two families were gathered for dinner) played with the father who also loved the game. So ds is trying to come up with a cheaper and less labour intensive way of producing the game. When it is finished, I will post pictures.
Dh is also discovering that one doesn't create perfection with a first draft. Each time the game is played with new people he learns new things that need to be added or changed. It never occurred to him that it would need to be played so much in order to work out the kinks. I've added a lot of ideas and will likely come up with the simplified production model just because I'm much better at "good enough" than dh is.
The joy for me in this is dh and ds are having an absolute ball working on this together. Dh has no woodworking skills but those are ds's passion (it is inherited from my Dad but ds was too young when dad died to have learned from him directly so he's learning from Youtube, just like LadyM's ds14.)
While they worked away on their project, I had a great day with dgs2, putting into practice many of the speech therapy tips I learned from the book and video I did on Tuesday, and using music to add three words to his word list - fly, sky, ground. I need to start writing out the words to the songs I make up so I can be consistent. We spent a lot of the day flying planes around the apartment and singing. To me, extra joy came from listening to him sing many of the notes, all of the rhythm and some of the words when he was flying the planes around on his own.

Re: Suddenly Saturday Stock-taking!
Good morning!
Yesterday I restarted the habit of moving my body each hour. I had 85% success so I am going to add something else.
Today i am restarting the habit of planning & preparing our food. I would not be surprised to discover that we have eaten more takeout food in the past 3 weeks than we have over the past year. The kids would love to continue a steady diet of takeout pizza and hamburgers along with frozen & instant foods. DH and I are not so enthused with that idea. We put up with it because we needed it to be easy. I am looking forward to having homemade meals again.
I am slowly putting the pillars of health back into my daily life. Sleep, hydration, low stress, nutritional sound food, and moving my body. Once I have those habits back, I can turn my focus to other areas of my life that are still on hold. One thing at a time so I don't overwhelm myself.
This has been what I have done for 23 days. Everything that could be ignored while DH and I recovered from covid and I recovered from falling down the cellar stairs. I am slowly trying to pick up the pieces and put the structure back into my life that helps me get things done. I feel overwhelmed when I think of everything, so I am purposely selecting and focusing on one thing at a time.ignoring all that has to be done

Re: Suddenly Saturday Stock-taking!
CI I am posting from my new deck trying out options for color and pieces I have here that can work or not.
I can use the stools with 1/4 sheet of plywood for station for snacks, books, journals, rocks to dry.
Got the contractors seal of approval last night when he and dgd son stopped by for a look see.
I will have fun doing deck decor on my yt channel when this is done.
I have another table to move as well! Okay maybe two of them!
A gal's gotta have options! LOL!
Up on time slept well.
I had coffee Rx get dressed and walk ddog before the heat sets in.
Deck is 10' x 14' if anyone is interested.
Regular 2' what ever decking is more stable but needs treated / painted this does not.
I luv the color of this reminds me of beach wood sort of blue grey and goes with the house.
I watered last night and that really helped the lawn in back.
I need to do floor inside later hopefully I will be back with progress on that.
I have been consistent with more steps for a month a new trend according to my phone.
LM is that habit you restarted on your apple watch program?

Re: Suddenly Saturday Stock-taking!
Kathryn, you sound great! Full of things accomplished this week and looking ahead to a wonderful trip!
I made reservations to go to Nashville next week to the state library and archives. Need to pull together the most important stuff to research while I'm there. I'm looking forward to it. I have this coming week, and most of the next, then we go visit out of town friends in ATL for a weekend. On that Sunday p.m. I have online orientation for the institute course on Virginia research that begins on Monday a.m. So that week is full to the brim. And we have painters starting on the outside of the house on the 19th.
I need to get through a.m. routine and make a quick trip to drugstore - and will get batteries for my pencil sharpener there too - and I think I need to run into the grocery there for the flavored creamer we add to coffee. (For the record, I add milk, then a shot of the creamer.)
Dh is out today - possibly into the p.m. hours - volunteering at a Rotary event.
I have the DAR form, a list of next week's research, and NGSQ article to read for my weekend "work."

Re: Suddenly Saturday Stock-taking!
I don't have an apple watch but I think most of them do similar things. The Fitbit that I use tracks hourly steps using this free watch face/app.LM is that habit you restarted on your apple watch program?
We had a thunderstorm come through during the night with strong winds and dumped 2" of rain. I knew the garden took a beating from the storm so I asked DH to go with me to survey the damage. DH helped me pick up the 5 tomato plants/cages that were blown over and laying on the ground. When the plants toppled over it pulled their roots out of the ground about half a foot. The plants are approx 7' tall and loaded with green tomatoes which makes them top heavy. Several of the plants had bungee cords attached to their cages to stabilize them but being so top heavy the winds had their way.
I have been thinking the only solution is to put a top over the garden to stabilize the tall plants. I really do not want to put a top on the garden because it puts so many limits on what I can do, and it is a maintenance issue. However, this morning I had a different idea about putting a cattle panel down the center of each raised bed. They should provide a strong stability factor without getting in the way. I need to think on this possible solution more to make sure it will work.

Re: Suddenly Saturday Stock-taking!
Back here again to finally get to post. Taking stock...I am satisfied with what I've gotten done this week, but I am also very very frustrated. There is so much to do always and the work is incredibly hard to do. DH can only do certain things and those with much difficulty and I do not have the strength / stamina to keep doing what else needs done. Just the inside of the house is way way hard and I was feeling this morning that it feels as though all I do is clean all the time. I had done a bunch of stuff and thought ok that's enough for yesterday and today, I will stop for today. DH came in and wanted help with his mower...he's working on repairs. We've had this thing, bought used from someone 15 years ago and it's been used pretty heavily. Seems he's always fixing it and I'm always helping.
So he had me sitting there operating the levers while he did some things to make it start..which it did...and I took it out to the yard and we used the air compressor to clean out all the grass clippings from all over it and underneath. When he went to turn the air comp. off I suggested we could blow out the back end of the shop which was full of debris, grass, who knows what else, dust, dirt... so I did that for him and the cement storage pad he has outside the back door. I came away from all this thinking how badly we need help around here. I don't know how to solve that problem.
Anyway, first thing this morning I went over the insurance papers we got yesterday and I compared the 2 companies, making notes. Then I finished vacuuming the inside of the house where I left off last evening. We have a door to the backyard off that master bathroom, and all sorts of stuff comes in on our feet, especially when we cut the grass. I did my LOL and hung that up, changed that bed linens and washed those after that load was done. Everything dusted back there and I finished the bathroom, mopped floor, scrubbed everything. Dusted too.
I've been working twice as hard and it feels like getting half as much done. It doesn't help that DH has so much stuff everywhere. It makes me so frustrated. Well I guess I should go and eat something.

Re: Suddenly Saturday Stock-taking!
I had a very productive week. This morning I drove to MIL/SIL's house in the city I used to live in. UGH! The traffic up there is just nuts! Had to take the toll highway part way home and then when I got off that, the highway going towards my house was stop and go, bumper-to-bumper. I dropped off a box of tiles that they are going to use in their kitchen reno this fall. Glossy, white subway tiles. The box was so heavy, but I got it there safely. We also gave SIL a large zippered bag of green beans from the garden. They have all been picked this week.
Back hall is still a mess, but I got the sheet washed and dried and it's back in place on the dryer with everything back on top of it the way I like it. All the books and other things still need to go back on the shelf.
We have a guy coming to help dh around here starting tomorrow. He will be doing the weed whacking, especially in the ditch. I'm not sure what else. Hopefully weeding, because dh isn't doing that this summer either.
I stopped at Costco on the way home to pick up dh's meds. Parking lot was jammed packed. Carts were hard to come by. Store aisles were full. Line ups for all the samples. Thankfully the cashiers were all open, so getting out was super easy.
I came home to the grass being all cut AND the dishes were all finished!!
Supper tonight will be chicken and a vat of potato salad.

Re: Suddenly Saturday Stock-taking!
Harmony...I feel for you. Can you just declare a day of rest and refuse to do anything including helping your DH? Can you just say NO, not to day to him so you can enjoy the day? I keep throw rugs in front of all my doors as you come into the house. It helps to keep the stuff on our feet from the outside coming in. I also have mats on every door out the outside just for that reason.
LadyM...my brother is known as the Tomato Man in his area. He has built trellises above his tomatoes and ties his to it so they won't fall over. He also stakes his. His garden area looks like a pergola with a 3' wooden fence around it.
I also purchased a Molocy brand smart watch from Amazon awhile back. Think I paid $35. Best thing I ever did and I love it. It tracks my steps, my heart rate, sleep, blood pressure, oxygen level and even lets me read any texts that I get. The text msgs are too small for me to read, so I just use my phone, but at least I know when I get one. I can set my step goals and can set to it remind me to get up and move. I set it for once an hour. It has an alarm and many more things. The app is on my phone and the information is there as well.
My closet is just about done. I had to stop because Sweetie was having difficulties with his computer signing into some of his places. So I stopped to help him figure out what he was doing wrong. This happens more and more as time progresses. He has difficulties following directions at times..like when I ask him to put the waste paper basket back in the laundry room and he stands in the hallway trying to figure out where it needs to go. Yesterday I asked him to take some stuff out of the tub in the hall bathroom, and he kept trying to go to the guest bathroom. There is no tub in that room. However he is usually great helping me when I need something done like my shelves in the kitchen. I just have to help him not get too frustrated when he can't figure something out....That's what laughter is for.
Back to my closet ;D
