The Peace rose, formally Rosa 'Peace', synonym Mme A. Meilland, is a well-known and successful garden rose. By 1992, over one hundred million plants of this hybrid tea had been sold. The cultivar has large flowers of a light yellow to cream color, slightly flushed at the petal edges with crimson-pink. It is hardy and vigorous and relatively resistant to disease, making it popular in gardens as well as in the floral trade.

It was developed by French horticulturist Francis Meilland, in the years 1935 to 1939. When Meilland foresaw the German invasion of France, he sent cuttings to friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany, and the United States to protect the new rose. It is said that it was sent to the US on the last plane available before the German invasion, where it was safely propagated by the Conard Pyle Co. during the war.

Good morning,Trissie, and thank you for starting us off. "Peace" is such an iconic rose, , I think especially as it was marketed just after WW2. Growing up, everyone seemed to have o one in in their garden (Along with the Queen Elizabeth rise - a tribute to the then mew Queen). My parents had a huge Peace rose in a bed to itself, right by their front door. Ive carried on the tradition, and also have a Peace rose in my front garden, but it's not as vigorous as the ones I grew up with. I wonder if its vigour has declined over all those years...

I have nothing on the calendar for today (or tomorrow or Wednesday) so three clear days is a real luxury. The weather is also supposed to be.kind, so I need to use these days well. The only cloud on the horizon is BIL's impending visit (he arrives on Friday for the weekend  ) but I think I'll change the sheets on the bed in there and get the room ready for him today, so it's done, and tell DH not to make a mess! That way, a very quick dust and hoover on Wednesday should be sufficient.

So, my plans for today, I really must ring the butcher to order the meat for Easter. It's going to be a beautiful day (Ive watched the sun rise! :D ) so I would like to get out early for a good walk, and spend some time in my garden. I need to concentrate on the upstairs of the house today, and give those windows a quick clean. I also need to spend just a few minutes and "pick up my footprints".

kittykatt, I have two Queen Elizabeth roses (they are unfortunately very likely to get black rose spot) and a Peace rose (that I've already had to replace once because it's less than ideal location). But I will continue to try with the Peace rose - it was my favourite at my grandma's rose garden!

Regarding the comments on the bed in DBD's room yesterday - I forgot to add that it has a pull-out part which creates a nice queen size bed (160cm) for sleepovers/guests and three big drawers. It's very versatile!
Also, on the topic of white walls - I tried to google it and apparently the reason it's so common in Europe is the change of seasons. White walls are the best for reflecting light (so they work well in long winters), and also do not heat the way darker walls would (so they are also the ideal choice for hot summers).

Anyway, stopping by to make a plan for the week. Can I decrease the number of carry-overs?

Trissie, that makes perfect sense about the wall colours. We have a very pale cream colour for most of the house, with white on the bathroom, and a very, very pale pink for our bedroom. Some day I may repaint, but it's ok for now.

I'm hoping my Peace rose will do better now the big fuchsia is no more, and I also took out another rose last year that wasn't doing well (that one had the most evil thorns, so when it decided to decline, I had no hesitation in digging it out. Even if my Peace will never reach the proportions of the bush in my parents garden, I would still like to give it a chance. :D

So far today, I have rung the butcher and ordered the Easter meat, given myself a very mini pedicure (just smoothed the hard skin, trimmed and filed nails and rubbed in some lotion) and taken Fred out. Having a late breakfast, then I'm going for a nice long walk to enjoy the sun. It's still a bit chilly, but the sky is a cloudless blue, so I'm determined.not to waste it.

I love to look at roses but I only have one…. A basic red that a student gave me many moons ago. My peonies grew in leaps and bounds last week but everything may slow down again for a bit. Temps have plummeted… 80s yesterday and now 40s and 60s for the rest of the week. That makes sense about the paint color and maximizing weather benefits, Trissie. Here people go crazy on Facebook when the electric company reminds people that the ideal temperature in winter for your house is 68 and summer 78. They claim they can’t possibly survive in those temperatures and then they complain about their bill.

Good morning, L.Ann! Your talk of peonies reminded me to check mine that I bought last year, to see if it's survived the winter. Weel, it has,.and it's shooting nicely. :D The slightly strange thing is that it's not I'm quite the same position as where I planted it. :?: So, I moved the paeony cage to accommodate it.

I had a lovely walk, and met some of the dog walking ladies. Now, I'm sitting in my garden with my coffee, enjoying the sun. I've done a little dead heading, and next I need to water my pots.

Glad you got in a walk and can work in your garden, Kitty. You've reminded me that I should reserve our traditional leg of lamb for Easter. Since I'm moving my mom the week before, Easter is kind of falling through the cracks here.
We have a colder gray week ahead of us too, L Ann. Snow is even forecast for Wednesday evening, though it won't stick.
That bed does sound ideal for DBD, trissie, as well as being attractive! The built in storage alone would have gotten me hooked.

We have one rose plant in one of our garden areas by the curb. Friend B planted it for me. It is surviving but not thriving; I think we're a little too cold and it may have too much shade.

It is very gray and 34*F right now with a high of 42*F. Not inspiring weather. I think my get together with dd26 has become a lunch date tomorrow, so I have this morning to prep for payroll and do other things.
