To make a basic vinaigrette, all you need is vinegar (sherry, Champagne, balsamic, cider, red, white, or rice wine vinegar all work) and oil (go with a neutral vegetable oil like grapeseed for a mild base, or your best extra-virgin olive oil for grassier undertones).

To make your vinaigrette, whisk a little kosher or fine sea salt into some vinegar until it dissolves. Start with about ¼ teaspoon salt per tablespoon of vinegar. Keep whisking and slowly drizzle in double the amount of oil as vinegar, then taste.

Whisking will hold it together long enough to dress your salad (just shake or whisk again before serving if you make extra to enjoy throughout the week). Finish the dressing off with some freshly ground black pepper.

Good morning everyone and happy Thursday! Today we commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. We will be having a special service at church this morning, and, this evening church bells will.ne rung throughout the country.

Bama, you and Peaches have reminded me I need to do Kitty nails, and that is certainly a task! (Maybe I can leave Freddie's for now, as he will get a "professional" mani-pedi when he goes to the vet at the end of the month)

Helian, I'm glad your DMum is drinking - as everyone else has said, it's so important.

Well, yesterday didn't go as planned. I was up, showered, dressed and Freddie walked by 8 am, but no one turned up. By 10 am he was still a no show, so I rang the number Id been given, thinking there was.a problem with the van, or maybe he was unwell. Turns out, he had gone to the wrong house. I'm still sweet and understanding, until I was told he wouldn't be able to come Wednesday, but how about Thursday? Well, I'm out Thursday, and as they didn't turn up today when I'm waiting for them, I can't really trust them to turn up when I'm not there. (I didn't say it quite like that of course, I was more polite, but the meaning was clear). Well then,how about Friday? Just no,.as I've had to move all my plants, and I want to get them back ASAP, as it's not doing them.or the lawn any good being piled up there. In the end, the coordinator worked a.miracle.and T arrived at 3.55 pm. Fortunately for him, he was a very personable and hard working young man (originally from Lithuania, but his English was good) and has done a good job on both the gutters and the cladding, so the top of the house is looking smart again. Dnextdoorneighbour C was interested in using the same company, so I advised her the standard of work is very high (as far as I can tell) but she will need to be around for the whole day, if necessary, to supervise!

I did eventually get my plants back in place (DH very kindly moved the really heavy one for me) but it was nearly 9.30 pm by the time I had watered everything. Fortunately, it's that time of year when we have lovely long, light evenings.

Next job round the house will be a plumber to fix the kitchen tap. Curiously enough, with the warmer weather the dripping has greatly reduced! Today is going to be busy, so maybe tomorrow, or maybe leave it until Monday morning? We'll see.

Today is going to be church, followed by the usual coffee and chat, and then I need to take Jude for her appointment at weight loss clinic. I also need to remember to request more flea control for Matilda, as I had a text yesterday to say it's due. I also need to leave early for both of these due to the ongoing roadworks (just how long does it take to dog a hole? ) This evening is my Waitrose delivery. I'm planning chicken soup for supper, with fresh bread. This will use up the broth from the chicken carcass and is good natured if the delivery is delayed for some reason.

gma, you asked yesterday - I studied in upstate New York, as an exchange student. It was actually pretty common at that time, at least "in my circles". The high school I went to was known for its superb English program (which got cancelled the year I started there, duh), so in our class of 30, there were ten "embassy brats" (kids who lived with their parents at different countries where parents were employed at either foreign service or as guest lecturers at universities) and quite a few of us went on semester or year long student exchanges.

It's bank holiday today, and I've had a good laugh about Slovakian president not even being able to get to Russia on time for Putin's parade because nobody would allow him to fly over their airspace. But then I realized that we have elections coming up in the fall and we have our own Russian-financed politics and it was no longer funny. But at least we have a good looking non-senile pro-western president for another three years, so there's that (don't google our last one, that was such a disgrace)!

I'm having a much deserved slow morning, but it's time to get going!

Glad you got your gutters cleaned and your plants moved yesterday, Kitty. Enjoy church and coffee with friends!

I'm hoping that Mom will be discharged today. I don't need to be part of that process as the hospital will coordinate with the nursing home. I will check in on Mom wherever she is.

This morning, I'm meeting my trainer at 8 a.m. Then, I'm meeting B at her house on that side of town at 9:30 to walk and talk. Between those 2 activities, I should get in enough exercise for the day. No jogging, though. That's being sidelined while I spend time with Mom in the hospital. Then, I'll go to the hospital - if Mom is still there; R texted yesterday and said he would like to see me there and chat. I have a coffee date with a friend at 3:30. I also need to get some groceries and make the midterm test for my class. Doing some laundry would be good too.

Hi to all. Enjoying a quiet and mostly sunny VE day. Those days off payroll are useful to catch up. Did a few home chores. Also, gardening in the morning, and no plans for the afternoon.

Bama, FFB, I've been having trouble with the site too. Sometimes not allowed to get to it, always find notifications in spam, even though I continue to click the not spam button.
Helian, can the hospital help you find a neurologist before Mom is discharged?
Trissie, HS in NY was a long time ago for you, but I'm sure interesting. Do you still keep in touch with the family who hosted you? We had exchange student at my HS sometimes, too. I remember a black girl from Barbados, when we were all white. Not because of segregation, but because we were a town settled by German and Scandinavian Europeans, and that's who lived here. Now we have Somali, Hispanic, and several others. English as second language is available in our adult education. Local newspaper reported yesterday that our HS is above 94% graduation rate. Only 2 small towns above us in our region.
I've got to get up, start ddog's medicine, and take her in for recheck.
